I first purchased this item from Walmart and had to return the unit for replacement right out of the box. The second unit performed very well, but failed 1 day short of the 1 year warranty. Now I'm stuck taking it out of the PC case again & having to mail it at my expense to HP. I'll have to wait for a return authorization number before I can even send the unit back for refurbishment.

My DVD driver went bad a couple months ago, so instead of getting a new PC, I decided to get this new DVD Driver. Priced perfect. It was better than what I had before. I took apart the PC tower as shown in the help instructions on HP. Took out the old one, replaced it with this new one . Turned everything back on and PC recognized it... and it ran great. Easy to install. SHould have done it sooner.

Bought this unit on a Saturday because I bought a new MOBO and CPU. Did not realize it had no IDE connectors and I needed SATA. Drove 17 miles to get unit brought it home put it in and started loading Windows 7. Windows asked for drivers. There was no disk in box. Went on line found unit review but when I looked for drivers and manuals there were none. The site does not recognize dvd1270i! Tech support is closed until Monday so no computer this weekend.

I upgraded the Media Center PC m390n (DM165A), i.e., no longer supported by HP since 2004/2005, by pulling out the HP 16X IDE DVD-ROM (p/n EL460-69001) and installing this HP DVD1270i. First, there are two SATA interfaces on the Motherboard (built about 2003). The kit to install this DVD Multiformat ReWritable device includes a SATA Data Cable. Great. However, it lacked a SATA Power interface cable: 15 pins on the 1270i and only 4-pins on the power cable. Used a PACTECH 6-inch SATA y-Power Cable (PP-SATA-P), Plu #5975464 ($2.99). Worked GREAT! Turned on PC, and everything worked DANDY. Have yet to write anything, but did play music from a CD-R. Now I have many many more DVD formats including Double Layers. Old PCs never Die, and why should it? This dual Pentium IV PC has 3.2 GHz CPU speed, and still out-runs many. The Front Bus is faster in New Models. So What? I also put in 4 GB RAM and have migrated from XP to VISTA and Now to Windows 7. Humming like a Humming Bird....

The PLDS HP 1270i 24x Internal SATA DVD-RW Burner with LightScribe, allows you to store media on a wide variety of disks. With support for DVD+/-R DL, DVD-RAM, DVD+/-RW, as well as CD-R and CD-RW, you can burn home-video DVDs, create mix CDs, or just back-up important files on your computer. LightScribe technology allows you to write labels directly to compatible disks, so you no longer have to worry about illegible handwritten labels and the hassle of printing label stickers.
