Solid, effective monolight.

Flexible and easy to use, the Starflash 650 has a durable build. I've used this light, in conjunction with a Starflash 300, to light college basketball games. The 650 has a built-in fan and stays cool, even under intensive use. The modeling light is 250 watts, rather more powerful than the bulbs on many other lights. The flash is well-balanced and natural. The one fault I found was the relatively slow rate of recharge at full power—about 3-5 seconds. This probably won't be an issue in most cases, but it's something to be aware of.

• The StarFlash 650 Mercury Umbrella Kit features the StarFlash 650 monobloc strobe head in an all-inclusive lighting station. The StarFlash 650 is a mid-range strobe offering variable power up to 650 watt/second. This is a monobloc head designed for the seasoned professional and the emerging photographer.

The StarFlash uses high-quality German flash tubes. The modeling light can be set at full brightness or proportional to the flash tube light output. It recharges quickly. Audible and visible light full-charge indicators. This kit comes complete with a StarFlash 650, 6" reflector, 43" silver umbrella, Tilt Swivel Mount, Lamp cover, and LiteStand 2214.
