I've been using Eclipse photo umbrellas since I got them in my Photogenic Monolight kit some 10+ years ago. I like these umbrellas a bit better than most others because the reflective lining covers the spars and, I think, creates a more pleasing lightfall. Being that the spars are covered, the light is more spread out at the center due to the convex shaping which results in a lesser hotspot. Unfortunately, I bent one after it fell from a gust of wind. So, I went to my trusty ol' Adorama website and ordered two more. The good news is that they arrived a day ahead of schedule. The bad news is that they weren't packaged very well and handled roughly from the looks of the packaging. The umbrellas weren't placed in any protective packaging inside the main box. They were just put in a box that was twice their length. When I removed the umbrellas from the box, I found that one of the umbrellas was damaged. The plastic retainer screw cap on the end, which insures the material doesn't come off the framework, was broken into four pieces. The material had slipped off three of the spars too. Some assembly was required where none should have been. That's why the one star off. The product is great. It deserves five stars.

Easy to use. Easy to store. I have more expensive umbrellas that break when putting them away. These work great.

As soon as you open it, you can feel the difference in quality with other cheaper brands. Umbrellas are umbrellas right? Not really. The quality of the materials are important, and this seems to be good at that. I like that it feels heavy and won't fly away with minimal effort.

I use these umbrellas for studio work, I like the fact that the ribs are behind the reflective surface minimizing the chance of rib shadows in my portraits, however wnen used for shoot through the quality of construction leaves something to be desired in the form of unfinished edges in the fabric where they meet in the center of the umbrella. Also in shoot through you now have the ribs exposed and very prominent, I will not use these for shoot through umbrellas which is unfortunate because that had been one of the considerations when I was shopping. That said they are a great value as a reflective umbrella and that is my main use.

This kit provides the best of convenient transportability and rugged performance. The stands are very secure, and the bag holds much more than what comes with the kit. This is the perfect set for on the go band shoots, etc.

I have just started using additional lighting to improve my portraits taken with my dslr camera. I ordered this kit based on the umbrella size I needed per a photographer friend's recommendations. The stands & umbrellas appear to be well-constructed and are very easy to use. The bag is larger then the stands and umbrellas, but I don't mind at all because that allows me to store my strobe lights in the same bag with my stands & umbrellas. So far, so good!

I love this umbrella kit. Like others have commented, the bag is a little large but that's better than too small. The stands appear to be of excellent build quality & can be raised to a pretty good height.

This umbrella is a good quality product that gives the flexibility of bounce or shoot through with the removeable black cover. I haven't tried but I would think this umbrella might not work real well for shoot through using speedilites. The silver inner lining is pretty reflective for bounce but might inhibit too much light for shoot through unless using a decent watt second strobe.

The umbrellas are set in just a few minutes. The quality of the shadows is consistent so it is very easy to have a floor plan with positioning of the umbrellas and the subject and to repeat the same set up over and over

This works perfectly for my small studio. Reflects light really well and consistently from my 580EXII.

This is a great umbrella at a good price. I thought the stem on the umbrella was a little long if you want to get it close to the subject.

Easy to use and transport, pretty good build quality, seems to be better used as a reflective umbrella as opposed to shoot through.

i use this in place of my softbox sometimes as it is not always convenient to carry around a softbox and this size umbrella distributes the light evenly over my subject.

I like to use these to light my background when doing studio work and even use the 60" on my main light sometimes. Very nice build quality and they really spread the light nicely. I wouldn't be caught without at least a couple of these umbrellas.

Ive purchased Umbrella (Modifiers) from Impact, Smith-Victor and now Photogenic. The Photogenic Eclips is no joke, by far it has been the best for my uses of a non shoot through modifier. The Photogenics Eclips black backing is just what I needed to ensure a perfect bounce. I recommend the Eclips for anyone needing it for the same purpose as me. Other modifiers such as my S-V and Impact, you can see right through the black backing even with just the modeling light on (NOT GOOD) Photogenic products have my best vote.

As a full time photographer I rely on equipment I buy for a reasonable price to last for years and years of semi rugged use. I've owned two satin eclipse umbrellas since 1995 and used them nearly daily. A word of caution- whenever used outside they make a great sail; weigh down your light stand, Once they fall you'll have to buy new.

My first Photogenic 60" umbrella lasted 5 years of heavy wedding use. Finally a rib broke. This replacement is identical, I think. Only caveat was that it arrived with a slight bow to the umbrella shaft that slides into the umbrella fixture on the strobe light. The shipping box was in perfect shape and the sealed package around the umbrella was in perfect shape. I thought that perhaps Photogenic designed in the bow to compensate for the center of the umbrella not being in the center of the light beam because the shaft will always be offset a few inches above or below the light. Photogenic website shows a straight shaft. So, is this a feature? It works as well as my other one before it broke.

Although this umbrella seems well made, it is not 32" as advertised. When I measured the diameter it was only 29 inches! Now perhaps the manufacturer measures the size across the curve of the umbrella and not the diameter but I find that hard to believe. Be aware that this umbrella is quite small and useful only for small subjects.

The shaft of the umbrella is just pressed into place. I pulled two of them apart just by removing them from the package.

I used this umbrella as my primary diffuser until I purchased my softboxes. I now use it when shooting on location and when I want to diffuse my remote powered external flash. Versatile with shoot thru and bouncing. Black cover works great to block light from reaching camera lens.

Incredible Kit

An exceptional addition to any professional photography setup, the 45" Eclipse Umbrella with White Satin Interior & Black Cover (EC45BC) by Photogenic is renowned for its innovative design and superior functionality. This high-quality umbrella is specifically engineered to eliminate the common "ghost" image issue caused by the exposed ribs of conventional umbrellas.
The Eclipse model stands out with its white satin interior, a reflective fabric that not only covers the ribs but also expertly diffuses light, removing them from the primary light path. This results in a more controlled and evenly distributed light, perfect for achieving a wide range of lighting effects and preventing harsh shadows during your photography sessions.
In addition to the white satin interior, this 45" Eclipse Umbrella also features a removable black cover. This cover is designed to fasten atop the rib frame, effectively confining any light that penetrates the white lining. This unique feature provides a contrasting background, further enhancing the versatility of this photography umbrella.
Installation of this stylish and durable umbrella is straightforward and user-friendly. Simply insert the shaft through an available hole on any stand adapters and secure it with a thumb screw. The light pattern can be easily adjusted by moving the shaft in or out, allowing you to position the reflector closer or farther away from the light head.
Moreover, this versatile umbrella is compatible with the Hi-Gain reflector PL7R with the PL-2 PowerLight. By punching out the PL7R reflector's break away tab and aligning the reflector hole with the hole in the stand adapter, you can mount the reflector onto the PowerLight and slide the umbrella shaft through.
In conclusion, the 45" Eclipse Umbrella with White Satin Interior & Black Cover (EC45BC) is a functional, high-quality, and versatile tool that offers a comprehensive solution for all your lighting needs in photography.
