Profoto Frosted Glass Dome for D1 and B1

I wish it was cheaper, that’s the only thing I don’t like about it. I use it on my B1 and D2 when using large modifiers

I primarily use my Profoto B1's for portraiture and I'm very sensitive to the quality of light that falls on faces w/ various Profoto (and other brand) modifiers. I sought the frosted domes because I'll often use a 100cm Elinchrom Rotalux Deep Octa in conjunction with the Profoto B1. Elinchrom offers hard, shaft-mounted deflectors for their lights that quell the hot-spot at the center of the light source and furthermore offer varying densities and tints to expand and refine the effect. Unfortunately this deflector doesn't fit when combing two competing brands. I believe the Profoto glass dome for D1/ B1 comes close to this effect w/out affecting light output. Note that they're not convenient to leave on if you plan on transporting your B1's in the provided bag- The frosted domes add a significant amount of length that cannot be accommodated by the "Two light location kit" bag. Exchanging the frosted glass plate with the frosted dome can be tricky- I find that using dental floss to firmly pull one of the springs away from center and firmly placing the frosted dome in its place works best. The movement seems almost abusive, but I find it's the only way to successfully mount the domes in their seat. I wouldn't plan on making a habit out of it since I feel the springs may loose their pliability over many exchanges. Under the rare circumstance that you're only using the D1/ B1 lights under bounce/ deflected conditions I'd just leave them as they come- Very convenient to transport, etc.. However, if you demand the most subtle gradations of light then by all means get these domes!
