MARY M : Will this lens work on my D3100?STEVE W : I'm afraid I do not know.EDWARD G : Yes it will work, but remember that with the less than full frame chip on the D3100 it will be close to a 127.5mm lens. I use it on my D3100 and D700 and have been happy with the results.FELIPE R : Yes it will. I use it on a D5100 but I have loaned it to a friend that has a D3100 and he has had no problems. Excellent lens but very heavy. Hope this helps.MARVIN M : Sure, it'll work on your D3100. This lens (although it's not expensive) has turned out one of my favorite lens. It's very sharp (even wide open) excellent contrast. I have the focus chip in mine and I could take it or leave it.
Good shooting !
marvinANTHONY P : Yes,,, Remember it's manual focus......
steve f : what is a focus confirm chip? does it beep when the subject is in focus or some other indication?FRANK M : On my Nikon D5100, the 'focus achieved' light within the viewfinder lights up. And here's a detailed hint: Given the extremely narrow depth-of-field when at fully open 1.4 aperture, the focus indication is coarse and may not represent the absolute best focus achievable. For the particular lens I have, I find that optimum focus happens as the focus indicator light first comes on when I approach focus from the short-to-long focal length direction. As I continue adjusting focus in that direction, the focus light will stay on for a range that goes a little beyond the optimum focus. You may need to characterize this behavior on your cam/lens.MICHAEL M : Hi Steve,
First to answer your question about "confirm chip", this lens does not have auto-focus, so the confirm chip is basically the green focus dot you see in your view finder. It will light up, once you are in focus.
I wish it was full auto-focus, but it doesn't have this feature. However this lens is great. The clarity and boke you can acheive from taking photos is great. I use it for portriats or no moving subjects....
I also purchased the Pro Optic UV filter with this - it is a great investment as it protects your lens....JOSEPH D : Since the lens is not auto focus the manufacturer has a focus confirm chip in the lens. When you manually focus, a small white light illuminates in the view finder when you hit that point of focus (experiment with different camera focus settings). For me it took some time to get used to as the white dot is in the periphery, not central, there is no audio "beep". Practice both horizontal and vertical camera positioning as your eye has to re-adapt to the dot location. The lens manual focus action is slow, I would not encourage use for fast moving subjects (unless you can keep the camera stationary) although I have not experimented with lens use in "S" mode at high speed setting.
In bright light conditions I have taken some photos that are superior quality, given the price I think it is a great lens to have for the range it is intended for.EDWARD K : There is no beeping. This is a manual focus lens similar to a Nikon P series lens. I use the lens with a Nikon D800. The chip basically allows the camera to use the more advanced focusing/metering features of an autofocus camera. For most practical purposes you have some of the features of an autofocus lens without the actual autofocus function. It works well with my D800. The example of this lens that I have is quite sharp.MARVIN M : HI, no beep, it just gives a confirming round white ball when in focus.
Is it worth the $, I think it is.
This lens has turned out to be one of my favorite lens.FELIPE R : I have a Nikon D5100, when this lens is in focus a green light goes on in the bottom part of the viewfinder. Mine doesn't beep. Lens Works fine. Hope this helps.THOMAS H : It will show a small light in the viewfinder when it is focused. It will also allow your auto settings to work.ANTHONY P : When your lens is in focus,an LED focus indicator inside your view finder lights up letting you know that you are in focus...STEVE W : I have used many lenses with no automatic focus features, so I have a baseline for you.
In a lens with no such features, you're stuck with focusing manually.
But with this lens, you've got some help.
What you do is you set your f-stop within the camera, and then set the lens itself on the smallest setting - highest f-stop number. When you do that, the focus confirm chip takes over, and sets the lens to the f-stop you have designated within the camera. It's not automatic, but it has worked better for me than with lenses with no automatic features at all.ANDREW R : The focus confirm chip basically tells the camera body what lens is mounted (focal length, etc.) so that the camera's autofocus system can indicate to the photographer (usually the indicator is in the viewfinder) when he/she has manually focused the lens in agreement with the AF system. What that indicator is varies depending on the actual camera body. Some camera bodies may not support manual focus confirmation.
Ann B : I want to use this lens on my Panasonic GH2 for video making. I already have a Nikon adaptor for it, so I presume this lens will fit that. Is it worth having the version with the Focus Confirm Chip, though? I assume that won't work with the Nikon adaptor, only with a Nikon camera.LEONARD L : I can't answer that as I'm not familiar with the mechanisms of usimg it with an adapter. I do love the lens, though. The only thought I have is buy the version with the chip as it will make it easier to sell if you ever decide to do so-the cost difference is minor. Have fun!
MARVIN M : Hi Ann B, Using the lens in the configuration that you suggest I really don't have any information. As far as the "confirm chip" is concerned, in my opinion it is worthless. IE, very jittery and indecisive. I found it more accurate and even quicker to just manual focus.
hope my answer help a little.ANDREW R : It shouldn't matter one way or the other. Most adapters like the one you describe do not have an electrical connection, so the use of a focus confirmation chip is not useful. It won't hurt having it, but it won't help either.
