I purchased a dedicated lens hood for my Canon EF-S 18-200mm Lens.  The hood is made of plastic and doesn't look terrible sturdy.  However, for the cost it seems like a reasonable value.  If it breaks, I'll get another.  I take care of my equipment, so it will probably be fine.
