Great soft light

Beautiful quality of light, easy to set up and break down, high quality materials. It?s my go-to for many lit location portraits now. I used to borrow one from a friend, and that convinced me to buy one for myself. I use it with an Einstein or a Honey Badger, but it will work with basically anything (though I don?t recommend this for small flashes).

Dependable modifier, beautiful light

Great portable modifier, providing an extremely easy way to make soft light.  Have used with a speed light (on an S-Bracket) and with an AD400 Pro.

Works as designed

It is my favorite of all the light modifiers I own.  I recently trying to create more Fine Art photos and having this umbrella is a must I think.

Great for Soft-light!

Give a nice soft even light. Easy to transport and use. Build quality is ok,one of the tips that hold the material to the rib has already come off.

You get what you pay for

This is one of the simplest, most affordable, and transportable ways to achieve beautiful, soft light. Every studio photographer needs at least one of these.

A perfect solution

This is a must have for every portrait shooter.

Do you even shoot portraits?

The base shaft on this item is larger than 7mm, making it impossible to use properly with Elinchrom lights. If you're familiar with these umbrellas, half of the shaft is removable, which is great with most brands of lights, because you can mount your strobe on the non removable shaft with the flash tube inside of the umbrella and then you don't have 15" or so of the shaft sticking out the back end of your light. The only part of this version that is 7mm is the removable shaft, which means that when you use it with Elinchrom lights, you can't even get your flash tube inside of the umbrella or the diffusion sock.

Elinchrom users dont buy this product - even the 7mm version.

Fast, Clean, Light, Easy, use it all the time, highly recommend.

Great soft light!

I love how easy this modifier is to set up. It's light weight, and great for jobs outside of the studio. But, mine fell on day when the wind blew too hard for a sandbag to hold it down, and two arms broke. This is the second one I've purchased.

Big, soft light source, not super durable

Made well but if you need an umbrella with a 7mm, do not buy.  Someone over at Photek came up with the idea of making half the shaft removable so you can put two different umbrella shafts on it.  The problem is that if you have a head that takes a 7mm shaft, you are restricted to only moving it halfway up the shaft.  Not even far enough to get it inside the diffusion.   A big feature you are paying for.  Too bad because the umbrella itself is beautiful.  If you need an 8mm, go for it.  Otherwise this is a super weak solution to try to avoid producing two versions of this umbrella.   They should fire the rocket scientist who came up with this one.  Particularly lame considering the cost.

Bad product for 7mm Shaft

I've been using the 46" version for about 7 years and finally decided to give the 60" one a shot.  As a few other people have said, the diffusion fabric isn't sized properly for the umbrella and the opening is too small.  It fits snug on my 46" one, and every strobe I have put in it fit well.  With this one, the fabric hangs loosely and I had to fight to get my Einstein into the sock.  I still love the quality of light this thing produces, and you can't go wrong with the price.  I just wish it were designed better.

If you're looking for an affordable light modifier that provides great coverage and softest light with minimal set-up effort, this 46" softlighter II is the tool you want to pick up.

Love this soft light but do not feather it away from your subject in a portrait as the edge of it will enter your lens causing weird ghost like apparitions.

Beautiful light

Just a wonderful source of light that's easy to set up and break down, with quality construction.  Wind can be a problem, as with any umbrella outdoors, but it can take a decent beating.

The Best

I own the 36" and the 46". The white diffusion fabric fits perfect and the front is nice and smooth when connected to the umbrellas. 
The 60" is a different story. When attached to the umbrella, it doesn't have a clean smooth look like the smaller versions. It looks too large and is quite baggy/saggy. It's not enough to fall off the umbrella (indoors) but it looks like it was not made for this specific sized umbrella.
The over all quality of the umbrella and diffusion materials are nice. They are light weight, yet seem sturdy. Set up is quick compared to a softbox. 
I decided to trim the sock part that fits over the reflector. It was just too difficult to keep it from sliding in between the flash bulb and the reflector when attaching it to my DigiBees. It also bunched up and blocked the air vents for the cooling fan.

Nice soft light, but...

This is a great light modifier. It produces big soft light and the price can't be beat! My go to light for portraits.

This is an excellent product which is very versatile and provides soft lighting for any portrait session.

This light modifier really makes a difference and is easy to use. Works quite well even with a speedlight if the softlighter is set up near the person.

Good: easy to use, light is nice, fits my profoto b1 head nicely.
Big names swear by it.

Bad: the fabric used on the outside of the photek is so cheap, the light just goes right through it. You would think a solid black material would not be porous like a lampshade but this one is.
Paul buff umbrellas dont leak, they have no excuses.

Bottom line: it work as ok, cheap but Photeks design and QA teams are slackers.

This is a great product that produces a wonderful soft diffused light. Product is built well.

Great product!

I've owned Paul buff products, P-buff wins in terms of material quality. Their umbrellas are constructed of considerably better material. That being said the ease of construction and experience using the Photek is much more positive for me.

I assembled it for the first time with no instructions in less than 5 minutes. It packs down to a size that would easily be transported in all manners of conveyance, motorcycle/car/plane.

The negatives as I see it, is that the backing material bleeds light. I assembled it for the first time and put it on my Profoto B1 head, the light shown clearly through the apparently very porous black backing of the light shaper.

Aside from the materials issues, it does give very nice light at a good price point and I hope to get lots of use out of it before it needs replacing.
