Questions & Answers

RUDY R. F : I recently purchased the 14" calibration target with dvd. In his segment where he demonstrates shooting the target under studio lighting i have one basic question that was not answered in the video: and that is, BEFORE he shoots the target - what is his camera's White Balance set to. I have tungsten lights - so do i set the white balance to 'tungsten' - then shoot the target (and then make the necessary exposure adjustments) and after that, enter the corrected target into my custome white balance? I have a Nikkon camera. Anyone who can help me fillin this missing piece of the puzzel - I will be most grateful to -thank you.SEVA B : A calibration target could be used for setting an exposure and for setting custom white balance as well. The DVD has a segment in which Ed shows how to use the target to set custom white balance. Please check your camera's manual on how to set custom white balance, and use a test shot of a target to do this. You should follow this procedure Instead of using Tungsten WB in-camera preset. Alternatively, you could use a grey card instead of a calibration target.CARLOS S : Are you creating a custom white balance right in camera, or taking a picture of the target to create a custom one later? If it is right in camera then all you'll need to do is shoot the target while in the custom white balance mode. Your screen should blink with "Good" or "GD" or something like that if you performed it correctly. If you are doing it for later, use the white balance setting the most matches your current lighting shoot the target and then go about shooting whatever it is you are shooting, if you ever change the lighting remember to shoot the target first before continuing.ADAM R : I use this all the time and i don't bother setting a custom white balance in camera. I make the adjustment in post and use the target to get the accurate color. This is very handy to get the exposure correct while shooting. If I'm using flash, I use flash white balance in camera. If I'm in shade, shade. In the computer I use the image of the target to get the grey color necessary to set the white balance and apply it to the following images. Make sure that if you change your lighting you take another image of the target. It helps keep the exposure correct and gives more accurate color in post.GEORGE C : I would follow what you outlined. Set your camera for tungsten light. Shoot the calibration target to determine proper exposure, then shoot the white side and set for custom white balance. This should give you accuracy both ways.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?JIM M : One of the most troublesome photographic problems I have is getting a correct white balance. I am hoping that this device will help solve this difficulty.JAMES D : need it and couldn't find it anywhere elseDAVID C : Looking for practical white balance and exposure target and I saw it on a Daniel Norton's OnSet episode.Patty H : This is an accurate way to white balance your imagesWilliam P : Referral from Daniel NortonKENNETH P : Addition to my kit.DANELLE E : Lost the one I’ve owned for yearsMARION W : Professional PhotographerDAVID F : sizeKENNETH C : I have the 6 inch and wanted the bigger one, both are helpful in white balance and exposureTODD M : great! Ever leave home without it

I really rely on this handy target a lot while shooting events and headshots in ever changing lighting conditions. I slip it in my back pocket and it?s always with me. It holds up well. When I?m in a shoot where there is also a video crew they want to borrow it. ?Hey, get your own!? Just kidding, here you go. The worst part is leaving it at locations and never getting it back!

recommended if you like JPEGs

Great idea, but to be honest I rarely use it these days. If you are shooting raw and your camera has a wide dynamic range sensor there maybe little need for this item any more. Unless you are shooting JPEGs and have to hit the exposure dead on while in the camera.

Helps with accurate colors

I have an off brand speedlight and the flash white balance setting doesn't quite match up. This helps me be confident in my colors even with my beginner setup.

Worth the Money

It works great and I love the DVD that came with it. I love that. I was just thinking of getting a grey card but I'm so glad I bought this. The gentleman in the DVD not only gives instruction on how to use this for getting a custom white balance but also to check exposure. It's worth every penny. I highly recommend it.

Must have accessory

These PhotoVision, 14"calibration targets are a great accessory - and one that I recommend you take with you all the time. When folded up, they fit almost anywhere but are large enough that you can use them from a distance and still get a good exposure reading - very helpful in tricky light situations. Also excellent for white balance. And the reverse side is a soft, silver reflector - which is always handy to have around!

Great Tool

For those difficult to tell situations and calibrations amongst other things. It really is a nice package. And nice tutorials packaged with it. My sensors are all over the place (as Dynamic range is changing between cameras). Wanted a target to be able to calibrate. This meets the bill at a reasonable price. I wanted to calibrate . my Sekonic to the highlights.

Great for outdoor sessions

I have looked at a lot of While Balance tools and have heard good things about this product. It's the perfect size for my out door sessions. I love having the Dvd training that comes with it.

Works as advertised

Works great for checking exposure settings and for custom white balance. Even though it has a small silver reflector on the back, I question how useful it would be. Of course, I didn't buy it for that feature since I already have a number of reflectors that are much larger. If you want to use that feature, I suggest you get the larger size.

Great addition!

I can't think of anything negative about this other than the price. That is the only reason I rate it a 4 instead of a 5. This could be 10-15 dollars cheaper. It has really made a difference in the outcome of my outdoor photo shoots. I have also used the back side reflector a few times as well in a pinch.

Best money I have spent in a while

I shoot sports team and individual pictures, so consistent exposure and white balance from image to image is important. In the past I was using atuo WB. After watching the video on this target,I learned how to properly use Custom WB. Now, my images are consistent with correct skin tones without having to tweek in post. It is a little on the small side, but my Canon 5D II only needs a small sample in the center of test shot.

Great Product!

Small enough to carry in camera bag. Great DVD to show how to use it. I went to a photo class and the instructor had one and basically showed us how he used it to get a correct exposure.

A must have!

In addition to being an excellent 18% gray target, this item works as a great reflector. Both indoor and outdoor shoots have been vastly improved by being able to bounce (or block) light on the subject because of the compact reflector. Because of the small size, it stays fairly flat, allowing more accurate bouncing of light than a larger reflector (especially in windy conditions). It folds up into the perfect size to fit in the back pocket of my Levis.

Great for nailing exposure and color

The instructional DVD that comes with it is a great educational tool, probably worth the price in and of itself. The 14" size is a bit small for portrait work, but still perfectly useable. If I had to do it over, I would have payed for a larger size.

Good product

This white balance card works well and is easy to store and deploy. It has a pouch that holds it well in my bag and a DVD. The DVD is about 20-30 minutes long and talks about how to use the card as well as showing other products. It shows how histograms work. The camera he uses is a canon but they apologize for just having the one brand but explain that it's similar to other cameras. The only thing I would change is the reflector on the back. It's silver and I've found sun fire to work well at showing quality skin tone. But I really wish instead of a reflector it had 18% on the whole back. This would make getting custom white balance a little easier than using the small strip on the front.

I see the light

This product is just fantastic. It come in multiple sizes. I use two sizes, but I love the 14 size for it's size and ease of use. I find when I am using my fluorescent constant lights kit, I can quickly get the right white balance without fumbling through my guide books. It's simple to use, quick to put away. I use it with other light kits as well, with the same great results.

A useful white balance tool

This tool is excellent for helping to determine accurate white balance and exposure either on location or during post processing. It also includes a DVD which shows you exactly how to use it. I've been able to get perfect white balance in a variety of lighting conditions very quickly.

About PhotoVision DT14010

PRO REVIEW by Daniel Norton, Photographer, Director, and Educator

"Correct white balance and exposure (with Histogram), all in one unit, plus it's even a tiny silver reflector. I have one in every single gear bag. "

• Loss of Highlight or Shadow detail is reduced or eliminated by the use of this 14" Digital Target which has black, white & 18 % gray panels that feedback through the camera's histogram providing correct exposure with predictable results.
• Still large enough to fill the frame in most situations but folds to just 6 inches to allow carrying in your pocket or instant access when using with the included belt pouch slip case.
• Soft silver fabric on the backside creates an efficient reflective surface to open up the shadows.
• Created by photographer Ed Pierce, perfect for the Digital Image Maker both in the studio or on the go.
• The Panel feeds back through the camera's Histogram. Rather than using a single middle tonal value, you can customize your exposure based on the histogram spikes that record the highlight & shadows.
• The Neutral 3-Tone Panels allow for custom white balancing, accurate metering and exposure monitoring through the camera's histogram function all with a single shot.
• Vastly improves setup time over the original target, minimizing the need for post correction to your image files.
• Drastically reduce your workflow on the back-end by getting it right on the front-end. By using the Digital Calibration Target, you can achieve perfect exposures and white balance every time.
