Questions & Answers

John C : May I know what in the box? does it have a transceiver already?ROBERT M : No transceiver. The AC3 clicks into a Flex or a MiniTT1. The Flex or Mini is attached to the camera via the hotshoe. I love my AC3, it's nice not to run back and forth to adjust lights. Hope this helps yaGERALD H : AC3 Zone Controller and instructions only are included in the box. The MiniTT1 that this mounts to is sold separately.KEVIN S : All it includes is the AC3 Zone Controller you will need to have a MiniTT1 and FlexTT5's to use this device. This mounts to the top of the MiniTT1 or a FlexTT5 mounted to your camera to give you "zone control" if you have more than one remote flash. For example with two flashes remoted you will need the following devices, one MiniTT1 and two FlexTT5's or you can use three FlexTT5's (the TT5 can be a transmitter or a receiver, the TT1 can only transmit). The AC3 would mount to the "transmitting unit" on your camera and will allow you to control the flashes independently of each other without having change the flash settings on the flash itself. This device is not required but very helpful and time saving.JULIUS D : The box contains the controller, as in the picture, and printed instructions. There is no transceiver.STEVE J : what you see displayed is exactly what you get. There is no need for batteries as it is powered through the remote. You will need both the transceiver and receiver.DANA J : What comes in the box is the Pocket Wizard AC3 Zone Controller. The AC3 is attached to the top of the Pocket Wizard Mini TT1 transmitter sold separately or the Pocket Wizard TT5 transceiver. The PW AC3 Zone Controller allow you to adjust the light output on 3 different zones. Each of the three zones can consist of one or more strobe lights. The AC3 controller allows you to work with TTL strobes or in manual mode. The range of adjustment for your strobes in each zone is plus or minus 3 stops independently. Remember each strobe that you wish to control much be attached to a Pocket Wizard TT5 transceiver for on camera light output adjustments.JIM H : Does not come with transceiver.PETER C : The box contains just the AC3 Zone Controller. It connects to the hot shoe on top of the FlexTT5 or MiniTT1.ROBERT P : This requires that you all ready own a Mini-TT1.BILL M : no,it works on top of your mini tt1 wiich is plug in the camera'sflash bracketJAMES B : No, no transciever. The AC3 attaches to FlexTT5 to communicate with MiniTT1PHILLIP W : You still need a transceiver. The unit only allows the control of zones active on the transceiver.PAUL B : No. That controller sits on top of a separate transceiver. It allows you to control remote transceivers but you must have one on the camera and that one is not part of the controller.
GERRY L : Hello. i jst purchased a pw ac3 for my nikon system( nikon d200, sb900) i am have trouble adjusting the power level when iam in mamual mode.TTLis working perfect i also just updated my firm ware ?DANTE G : Make sure the firmware is the same version on all your devices. Other than that, there's not much else to adjust on the AC3 itself. Try swapping between the flash and camera controllers to eliminate that as the problem. I had a bad mini that I returned.KAREN B : Not really sure why the manual mode would be giving you problems while the TTL works perfectly. Flashes set to manual and AC3 on M works good on my end. I was finding more inconsistencies with the TTL on my flash output and more times than not would refer back to manual. Sorry I couldn't be more help to you.CRAIG J : More information on symptoms would be useful. I'd check that the flash is set to TTL mode and not A or M.PAUL D : Hi Gerry, I have been able to make the AC3 work in the manual mode, but the whole PocketWizard TTL system is quite sensitive to camera adjustment. Going from vibration stabilization on to off, or manual focus to auto, requires the whole system to be reset, i.e., turn everything off and start over by turning on the transmitter, then the camera. Sometimes you have to reset the SB900 using the menu reset to get it all working together again -- it can be frustrating, but when it works, it works well. Paul DavisFELIX V : Do you have your flashes set to iTTL. Place them on iTTL and leave them.LAURA L : I was having the same problem- TTL is the only way to use the zone controller. It is still in manually controlled though. confusing- but that is how it works. You are still manually adjusting the output.MATT O : Make sure your SB900 is set to ON, not remote or master and the mode is in Standard iTTL. Also turn on from top down. SB900, TT1/TT5, camera.RONALD S : For manual mode: leave the SB900 set the same as in TTL. ... switch the corresponding channel (A,B,C) to "M", and adjust the level. +3 being full 1/1 power. Shouldn't be anything else that needs to be done.
GERRY L : CAN I MOUNT THE AC3 RIGHT ON MY NIKON D200 CAMERA AND USE THE MINI AND THE FLEX ON MY FLASH UNITS ?KEN K : No. The AC3 mounts to either a mini or a flex which is then mounted to your camera. The Mini is only used on camera. It can not be used to receive. The advantage of the Mini is it is smaller, lighter and less expensive. The down side is the battery is $5. After about 2 months and a few batteries you will be better off just getting more Flex's (take 2 AA batt).KERRY S : No, the AC3 must mount on a mini or flex that is mounted on the camera. The AC3 has no radio and no internal power source. It merely offers more control over a mini or flex transmitter/tranceiver on the cameral. It is extremely useful as three channels can be independently adjusted manually or TTL, or turned off. It is very easy to use, hardly needs a manual. Even controlling a single flash, the AC3 is quicker and easier to use than going into the camera or flash controls to set flash output.BARRY M : Yes and no. The AC3 is a transmitter and goes on the camera, it allows you to control 3 flash zones. Only drawback is that you cannot have a flash on the camera at the same time. The Flex is a transmitter/receiver, is used as a receiver with each flash, and can be used with or without a flash as a transmitter on the camera . The mini is a transmitter and has to go on the camera and can be used with or without a flash. It also takes an odd sized battery.BRAD W : The issue is not the D200.You put the AC3 on top of you mini on top of the flash shoe of the D200. You need a flex on each flash unit.John D : The AC3 gets attached to the Mini which is attached to the camera. The Mini is a transmitter only. The Flex is a transceiver. It can be mounted to either the camera or the flash. The AC3 is neither a transmitter nor a receiver. It is only a zone controller.DAVID P : No, The AC3 has no power source. It gets it power from the Mimi TT1, and will not operate from the camera hot shoe.STEPHEN J : An AC3 controller may NOT be installed directly on the camera. You require a transmitter | receiver (tt1 or TT5) for the AC3 controller work, it cannot be mounted directly to the camera because it does not have a transmitter built in. The AC3 controller is a "dumb" unit and requires power from either the TT1 or TT5. Hopefully this answered your question.RICHARD L : I don't think it will work, because the AC3 derives its power from the Mini.. I tried the setup you described on my D300, and got nothing. Sorry. RichardTODD C : No you can not operate the AC3 without a Flex or Mini on the camera. RANDY L : No you need a mini or a flex to send the signal the ac3 simply adjusts the power settings.JOSEPH F : No the AC3 is designed to send and control flex or mini together. My recommendation is to use your mini together with your AC3 and flex units on the remote flash. PETER R : The AC3 sends the information to the Mini/TT5 on your camera. The Mini/TT5 on your camera will then then communicate that information to the TT5's on your flashes. Your camera will not 'understand' an AC3 connected right to it. The AC3 is built to only communicate with the Mini/TT5. You will need either a Mini or a TT5 on your camera, and then the AC3 mounted on top of it. I hope this helps.KEN B : No. The AC3 has no radio in it so it can only operate attached to the mini or flex. It's a great accessory with it's only downside being it eliminates the shoe for attaching a flash to your camera. Also, the mini needs to be on your camera rather than your flash as it's only a transmitter. If you want the control of the AC3 and a two flash setup you'll need to purchase another flex too.

AC3 controller for flex ttl Zone control system Pocket Wizard

Functionality is 2nd to none as a command module that independently controls individual lighting units in a larger array. Build quality seems a bit light and fragile .

Good Concept, But Not Reliable

I've had three of these over the last few years, and all of them exhibit the same problem. They work fine when new, but after I've used them for a while the connection between the AC3 and my TT5s becomes sporadic. When I change the dials, the changes aren't picked up and transmitted unless I push down on the corner of the unit. Even then, it doesn't always see the change. I'll occasionally have to remove the AC3 and put it back on to make it work. All three units have the same issue.

short of information on compatibility

seems I can't just use this without another purchase for my Elinchrom 600RX studio lights, for which, it seems, I'd need a Power ST4 receiver to attach to those lights. Ugh!

Great Tool

The AC3 is just the tool to allow photographers to balance and adjust the output of remote flash/strobes. When mounted on a radio transmitter (I use the Pocket Wizard Mini-TT1), the AC# allows you to control up to three lighting zones. You can have as many light sources as you wish in each zone. The AC3 transmit your adjustments to each light source mounted on an appropriate receiving unit (I use Pocket Wizard Flex TT5's) With the use of Pocket Wizard's AC9 unit on each light source, the Ac3 will even control the settings of Alien Bee light units. The AC3 removes the necessity of going to each lighting unit or group and manually adjusting the settings, returning to the camera position and retesting. You can manage all of that from the camera position, shooting the image and adjusting the lights with the AC3 as needed. A major time saver and stress reliever.

All About Convenience And Ease of Use

Takes a bit getting used too but once you get a system in place for setting up your zones, being able to adjust the power right from the camera with a few clicks is such a time saver. It also allows you to keep the connection between you and your subjects without breaking to adjust each light.

Extremely Handy In The Field

The AC3 is a great addition to a TT5 or Mini TT1 setup. I bought one almost 2 years ago, and just bought a second one as a backup. While they are generally very reliable, and work well as long as you follow the instructions, my first one did have an issue with the connectors which is being repaired right now. I'm guessing it was just a one-off issue though, as I've never heard of anyone else having that problem. Fortunately, they have a two year warranty, so the repair should be covered. Overall I couldn't do what I do as efficiently without it.

Control just a quick dial away.

I now own two of these. They are both always attached to my two camera bodies when I'm out shooting sessions in the field. The AC3 makes it quick and simple to adjust the flash power of 3 independent flash groups. It's nice to be able to quickly dial in the power to match the scene and the mood when shooting outdoors, where conditions are constantly changing. It makes the photographers life so much easier.

AC3 puts the control in your hands

The AC3 is a must have if you use PocketWizard's FlexTT5, MiniTT1 system. It provides complete control over your zones and the mode that your remote flashes fire plus Flash Compensation. It frees up the use of a Speedlight being used in Master mode. Although I use Sekonic L-478DR lightmeter to set my remote flashes power level when in manual flash mode, I find the AC3 to be a perfect complement. I can turn on and off groups from my camera position and if I want a group to operate in iTTL, than I just switch the AC3's group to A mode instead of M. Then the camera controls that group in iTTL mode with Flash Compensation dialed in by the AC3. Works perfect!

Easy Enough....

4 out of 5 because I think the stack on top of another stack is a clunky design. It seems to work well enough with Canon 580EXII and 600EXRT speedlights and FlexTT5/TT1 (and I don't use the RF shields). It can be a little flaky to get everythng working well all at once though. 3 flashes, 3 TT5 and the camera+TT1 never seems to follow the same flow to get working. Make everything work and THEN add the AC3 finally. I followed the PocketWizard tutorials, videos and FAQs and about the best advice I cann give is always start from the top down when you're powering up and if all else repeatedly fails it's probably the battery or you have the devices to close together.

Excellent For Multiple Flashes

When you are using multiple flashes it is so much simplier to just spin a dial on top of the camera than to try adjusting on each flash or putting them all up or down. If you have more than two flashes / pocket wizards this is a must buy.

Very nice Product

We shoot alot of equine sports and portraits, to be able to control the lights from the camera is so very nice, to get a person to stay in postition for a long time is alot to ask, try doing it with a person and horse. To be able to make all the adjustments right from the camera is great.

A creative and time saving tool

This is great if you do portraits and strobist stuff. The average photo guy or gal will not find it useful. It only works with pocket wizard remotes. Works really well for it's intended purpose, which is for controlling 3 zones of flashes that are on pocket wizard flextt5'S.

A good addition to the PW TTL system

This product was very easy to use and master the controls, very straight forward operation. With most of my PW items the plastic construction worries me for longevity. I haven't had any problems yet but the wear and tear of near every day use is starting to show...

Pocket Wizards are the best!

Off camera flash with speedlights is something i've been wanting to do for awhile. Bought the Flex TT5, Mini TT1 and the AC3, yes expensive but you wont be buying anything else after you get these. Sure you can buy the cheap ones to get your flash off the camera but having the high speed sync and ETTL available is amazing! Make sure to do the update on all of them before using them and check out Mark Wallace on youtube to learn about them. If it wasn't for Mark Wallace and his videos I would still be reading the manuals instead of using them! Thanks

Must have for the flex/mini system

This is an absolute must when you buy into the flex/mini system. I worked without it for awhile since I only had one light to work from. I then bought it so I could change modes/ power straight from the camera. It has saved me tons of time just not having to move from the position I am shooting from.
