Questions & Answers

Therese M : Do you need an AC9 for each strobe?ROBERT W : Yes, you need one for each Alien Bee you want to control output. The AlienBees will still fire in manual mode without it.ROBERT R : Yes, you'd need one for each AB strobe you want to control. They work great!KEN K : Yes, you need an AC9 for each TT5 to go on each strobeDAVE B : If you want to control each strobe, yes.JOHNNY L : I have one on every light . as for as my self I will never buy PW agene. I have more Problems with miss fires . the AC9's I have to walk over and play with the phone cable and take the Ac9 on and off . they have not been miss treated are miss used . If your going to want to control your lights with the AC3 then I would say yes you do .CRESCENCIO T : Technically, if you have an RJ11 splitter then you can trigger two strobes with one AC9 (I've never tried it so do it at your own risk). But you should really use one AC9 per strobe.TERRY W. G : Yes, one for each strobe you intend to control with pocket wizards.BRANDON K : You'll need an AC9 for each Pocket Wizard. If you set your lights to flash sync and don't require TTL, than you only need one of these and a pocket wizard to fire all your lights. If you want individual control and TTL than you'll need one of these for each light. From my experience... I have two White Lightening and two Einsteins. I use the 2 Einsteins to light my subject and control their power from camera using the pocket wizard adapter sold on their website. The two White Lightenings each have a AC9 and pocket wizard, but I usually leave them in flash sync mode and dont use the AC9/PW combination. I would use the AC9/PW combo if I wanted control of flash from camera, say I want control of changing the background or rim light exposure. Bottom line is if you want individual control of your light from camera, than you'll need an AC9. Is it required to fire your flash, yes if its your only flash and no if you have other flashes firing which are synced your camera. It really depends how you use your flashes and what control you require.VICTOR G : Yes, each AB needs an AC9 and a PW. The AC9 Connects to each FlexTT5 via the hotshoe. Then you connect them to the AB via the "phone" cable port through the AC9, not via the 3.5mm jack. Make sure the power slider is set to full on the AB, the camera controls the power and a different power setting can cause issues. You also have to turn the units in a sequence, AB first, PW second, otherwise the trigger will not work!! Ifbthe power is somehow lost to the AB and turned back on, the PW has to also be turned off and back on.MICHAEL S : yes ..............KEITH C : Yes you need 1 AC9 for each strobe. You ALSO need 1 FlexTT5 for each AC9. You could also just use plain old sync cords from you receivers to the strobes if you don't need the bells and whistles that the AC9 provides.JOSH G : Yes, you will need an AC9 for each strobe that has a pocket wizard attached. However, if you want some strobes to fire from the slave and have exposure set manually, the AC9 will not be required for those strobes.
maninerror m : Is this CE Europe version ? thanks hanifmaninerror m : Hi Thank you all for the answers. @Robert D, You have tried it and succeeded, haven't you ? On PW website it stated they will not communicate each other if frequencies are different.BOB D : The AC9 for Nikon works with either the US or the EU versions of the PocketWizard FlexTT5 for Nikon. It does not work with the FlexTT5 for Canon - for that you need the AC9 for Canon.LINDSEY T : This version is the US one.JOSEPH V : Don't know. Check with PWWILLIAM N : The box on the AC9 I received last week has the CE logo on the barcode decal. It also lists the international part number AC9-N.

A must for remote control of AlienBees

This works with the Pocket Wizard system and is specifically designed for controlling the Paul C. Buff AlienBees studio lights. It is easy to attach, fairly self explanatory especially if you are already using Pocket Wizards. This has performed exactly as intended. Happy with this product.

Great ADDITION FOR ALIEN BEES!

Control up to 3 seperate channels of strobes while operating your camera. You must use these with the Pocket Wizard TL system. The AC9 allows total freedom from your Alien Bees or White Lightning flashes when on location or in the studio. You dial in your flash settings from the MiniTT1 and AC3 mounted on the top of your camera Hot Shoe. The ACP is connected to a Flex TT5 and then directly to the remote control phone jack in the back of the flash. It is a FAST, and EASY setup! It eliminates running back and forth to your strobes to make adjustments. You can even turn your strobes off and on from the camera! Excellent product for cutting your studio or location setup and shoot time to a minimum.

Very nice product

I have had very little time with this product but when I first got them and hooked them up, it was easy and right away they were sync'd to the camera and I was shooting and adjusting with the AC3. Very nice to have all that control right at the camera.

Love my AC9!

My strobes are Alien Bees and as I learned studio lighting I soon learn what a time waster it was to have to keep walking around to each light to manually reset the power. With the AC9 and FlexTT5's coupled with the AC3 Zonecontroler I do not have to. I can now adjust my lights right from camera position, in the studio or on location. What a time saver!

AC9 works as described

I have noticed that it is very important that your pocket wizards and lights are turned on in the proper order or the modeling light doesn't respond/track right away to the AC9 even though the flash is firing and responding to stop adjustments.

Works now

I believe the original reviewer posted before the firmware that actually works with the AC9 was available, so "reading" wouldn't have been a help at that time. The AC9 units don't have any firmware, the firmware issue is with the Nikon compatible TT1 and TT5. Do be aware that PocketWizard's firmware was very buggy and now it's less so for it's Nikon products. You may need to run beta firmware to get around operational issues and for the products to work with specific Nikon bodies. My D7000 body has just been supported by a beta firmware, for example. PocketWizard's product supply line has been really slow for the Nikon products. I ordered three AC9s and Adorama sent me two. It took two months before I got my third AC9.

Love my AC9!

I love my Alien Bees but now I love them even more since I can control them with my AC9. I use it on location and in the studio. If you use Alien Bee lights then you have to have an AC9.

Works great if you actually read!

This works perfect. As stated on the PW website, you need the correct firmware version and for Nikon it's a Beta version. It's not surprising that Nikon and Canon use different versions as their flash systems are worlds apart and function differently. So in Fred's case, that 4 hours could have been saved by simply taking 30 seconds to read on PW website.

Early versions need Beta firmware

I feel Fred's pain. It did not work for me either. You need the Beta firmware version V2 Build 123. To get the Beta versions you have to change the settings on the firmware update for it to look for Beta versions. If you do a simple firmware update the Beta version won't show up.The following link has very good instructions on setting up the TT5 to work with the AC[@]Be sure to tell the utility what Alien Bees flash you using at the Sync timing tab. It seems to work for me now and the AC3 adjusts exposure up and down. I have not done a full studio shoot yet with the new setup

Makes my Alien Bees so much stronger

If you use Alien Bees you have to have the AC9. To be able to accurate raise or lower the power of the light by thirds of a stop is so valuable. It saves time and time is money. I cannot recommend the AC9 highly enough.
