Questions & Answers

Shopper : do you need two units to fire a flash off camera or does one unit on the camera ,will the flash pick up the signal?NANCY B : You need two units, one on the camera and one on the flash. The Canon system works with inferred signals- not the same as the pocket wizardsERIC C : You'll need a receiver on the flash as well. The tt5 is what you'll need to look for.JESS L : You need two units. You can also use the MiniTTi as on-camera transmitter and a FlexTT5 as receiver for the flash.KHA H : you need two to fire a flash . or a mini tt5CHRIS Y : You need two units. One for camera and one for the flash.ZACHARY G : You need two units. However, these units are highly undependable with their frequencies and transmission distance. I'm currently using the Yongnuo 622c. They seem far more dependable and are much cheaper, with the same functionality. Look 'em up. BOB C : you need the mini ttl on camera and flex on flashDAVID N : You'll need two PW units - a Mini TT 1 or Flex TT 5 on the camera & a Flex TT 5 in the flash. This is only if you want TTL control. Of course you want to be sure you have Canon or Nikon units with the appropriate camera & flash unit. If you are just needing radio triggering (manual control), any of the other PW units will work. Check the PW website for excellent video tutorials in all their models.TIFFANY V : It requires 2 FlexTT5's , one on the flash as a receiver and one on the camera as a transmitter. Or one miniTT1 as a transmitter on the camera and one flextt5 on the flash, hope this helps
STEVEN R : Has the problems with the Canon 580EX2 been fixed yet?DONNA M : I use the pocketwizard flex TT5 with two different Canon speedlights. With the speedlight 580EX2 it works most of the time. It does not always flash when I am using it. When I use it with the canon speedlight 430ex it always works. I hope this helps.STEVEN R : Thanks for the feedback... SteveSCOTT B : Not to my knowledge. They sell RF shields to prevent this from being an issue. I have used them without the shields and still had the work well, it just decreases the range.SCOTT S : No. But if you use the provided hood it works fine.ROGER O : We have used the pocket wizards with 2 580 ex 2s and 2 580 example. And have had no issues to date. For about 10 months DONALD H : PocketWizard includes a cloth cover with an imbedded RF screen to shield from RF interference created by the Canon 580EX Speedlight. Also a filter is provided which mounts between the 580EX and the hot shoe of the FlexTT5. Instructions are also provided suggesting orientations of the FlexTT5 to maximize transmission distance. I have not tried to test the maximum range claimed by PocketWizard, however, I have found the functional range to be quite satisfactory for typical flash shooting situations.
Shopper : How does this one rate with high speed sync?GORDON O : I've had no problems using HSS with a 430ex and 5dii. I think my highest sync was 1/1000 sec.RONALD G : Works well with both High Speed and Hyper sync.SCOTT S : I have used high speed sync with this transceiver without incident. Camera was a 7D with miniTTL transmitter and flash was a 430exII on this transceiver.PETER H : Works great. You can fine tune it via software to work up to very high shutter speeds. Go to pocket wizard's site to find out more. ROBERT P : I have used these several times with high speed sync mode and had very good results.

Great when used with AC3 Controller

The Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 pairs well with the AC3 controller to provide consistent triggering with remote strobe control on compatible strobes. I highly recommend the PW Flex TT5 and have used it extensively with our Einstein strobes.

I have used Pocket Wizards for several years. Pricey compared to competition ( that never existed when I started using PW). You can trust this product.

They are quality units. Nikon wireless system is to darn expensive....

I have a number of Pocket Wizards for remote flash and camera triggering. Got the Flex TT5 to allow high speed sync withNikon SB units. Have used the original Quantum unit and Phottix units I picked up in Hong Kong, but like my PW's the best. They are quality units. Nikon wireless system is to darn expensive....

Great with anything but 580EXII

If you use the 580 EXII flash then it's best to look elsewhere. RF emitted from these flashes destroys the transmitter signal and causes sporadic at best, with system failure a majority of the time. The patch is a hard shield (AC-7) and that kind of works but my experience is its not reliable when shots count. So many missed shots because of this! I consider Pocket Wizard a premium product and for the money, this system should be rock solid. Unfortunately, it's not with the 580 EXII. If you use other flashes I bet it works great with the only downfall having to change the settings on your computer. If that works for you, then this is an excellent solution. With a significant investment in Pocket Wizard, I am strongly considering selling all of it.

Disappointed

I bought a used FlexTT5 from this site and I am extremely disappointed to find out it is a European Transceiver. I have a U.S. MiniTT1 Transmitter and they are on different frequencies. Thing is nowhere on the product page did it state that the FlexTT5 transceiver was a European model and used a different frequency, so now I'm out $150, stuck with a useless transceiver and I'm going to have to go shell out another $230 for the right model. At least I don't have an immediate need for it...

Amazing Technology

I use Canon Speedlites for my location shoots. This and the MiniTT1 gives me more flexibility in arranging lighting and not dependent on a cable to take advantage of ENGLAND mode.

PocketWizard FlexTT5

I use this with my Nikon D7000 and SB900 and SB910 flashes. I am somewhat disappointed with the need to use a computer to change the channels as this creates a need to bring a computer with you on all assignments just in case you need to change the channel. Another dislike is the need to set the flash to standard dispersion which I typically don't use. Other than that the unit functions well. The software has a pretty good help screen, but can be somewhat confusing at first. Watching videos on usage definately helped.

FlexTT5 For the Win!

I love that these units take double A batteries and not a special battery like the MiniTT1. The unit is reliable and easy to use. Makes my life easier being able to trigger without needing line of sight and opens the door to many more creative opportunities.

Reliable off-camera flash radios

I like off camera flash but the Nikon i-TTL in the camera works some of the time. These simply work, every time. What more can you ask for? Dependable and versatile. And... they work with the older Pocket Wizards such as the Plus X.

This is the 3rd one i have purchased

Getting the flash off the camera has never been so easy. Pretty much plug and play. I can fire three flash guns at once located in different areas. For me the setup for more complicated flash setting were a little confusing but the tech crew answers questions relatively fast.

PocketWizard Quality

Reliability you've come to expect from a PocketWizard. Got this along with the Mini TT1 to get the free AC3 controller via rebate. A week after sending the rebate in, the AC3 controller was at my house. Thanks PocketWizard!

Consistent, Convenient, Versatile

Very dependable and consistent output. Recently used them off camera for lighting a very large group of faculty members. Set the TT5 units up early on manual and locked down the exposures for the group. Two hours of shooting and each exposure was consistently spot on. In post production, each exposure was as tight as the one before. I was very pleased as I have not had great results with other off camera lighting control equipment. For TTL exposures on the fly, after the first "calibration" shot, they perform flawlessly with recovery rates that keep up with my SB-910 units. More than enough channel choices and very easy to adjust using the AC3 on camera with a camera mounted Flex TT5. I did notice that using the TT5 unit on the D700, access to the ISO button was somewhat obstructed... not a problem at all with the D3s or D4 bodies. Putting them around corners, behind furniture or even covered with light fabric, they fire first time everytime. I couldn't be more pleased. Updating firmware was easy and straight forward... no problems with all Nikon equipment and CLS components. SB-800, SB-900 and SB-910 equally workable. Used on the D-300, D-700, D3s and D4 with predictably consistent performance. Very Happy with them, dropped in today to add another unit.

pocket wizard flex tt5 and mini

I only got them a week ago, used them twice, so far I really like the ability to be off camera. They have worked real well with my Nikon d3. The only grip I have is the hot shoe is plastic, I wish it were made of metal. They appear to be worth the money.

Pocket Wizard Flex TT%

What I enjoy about using the Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 is the range it has for using off camera flash. It's perfect and very reliable. I use this combined with 32" umbrellas and the versatility is simply amazing. No need to worry about infared signals or cables or wires. The Wizards wireless features make the set up process very easy and quick. Your off camera capabilities and creativity are great with amazing results while firing off camera flash. Just set and shot! No more wondering if you're in range and the Hyper Synch Flash capabilities are awesome. Need to Flash at greater than 250/sec., then look no further than Pocket Wizard Flex TT5 system. You won't be disappointed for investing in Pocket Wizard Flex TT5!

The answer is simple

By ALLEN S.

I was at an off camera flash class when the instructor was telling everyone that there was no need to spend the $ for pocket Wizard when I just happen to have a photo of a hummingbird I shot still in the camera. The photo was taken with the flash behind a tree 2 feet from the bird and I was 10 ft or better away from the subject. No blur in the wings at all everything in the photo was sharp as a tack at 1/4000 sec. f/7.1. His question to the STUDENT (that would be me) Was how did you do that.....

Reliable off-camera flash radios

By DURWOOD B.

I like off camera flash but the Nikon i-TTL in the camera works some of the time. These simply work, every time. What more can you ask for? Dependable and versatile. And... they work with the older Pocket Wizards such as the Plus X.

The PocketWizard dedicated FleXTT5 Transceiver, with its built in hot-shoe and ControlTL firmware, is the perfect addition to Canon E-TTL II flash systems. The FleXTT5 takes the existing benefits of Canon wireless systems beyond the boundaries of infrared technology. When paired with the Mini TT1 Transmitter or another FleXTT5 Transceiver, a whole new world of wireless flash freedom opens up. The FleXTT5 is also the perfect Transceiver for your manual triggering needs and works with all MultiMAX channels and many of the MultiMAX advanced functions.

The FleXTT5's simple design comes to life through its hot-shoe connection with a camera or flash. Mount a flash or command unit on the FleXTT5 to use the same zone controls and ratio commands as you would normally. The system tracks your changes in ISO, shutter speed and aperture and reacts accordingly to make sure exposures stay right on target. Use the flash compensation dial on your camera or flash just as you would normally and the changes pass seamlessly through the system.

The FleXTT5 has two channel configuration settings; C1 and C2. Each can be programmed as needed with up to 20 ControlTL channels for TTL photography, or 32 standard channels for manual flash photography. The FleXTT5 Transceiver also has a three-zone selector switch for ease of use with Canon zones and ratios.

With PocketWizard HyperSync Technology, the FleXTT5 can precisely advance the timing of your flash trigger so that increased flash sync speeds, up to 1/500th of a second is achievable with many strobes.

The FleXTT5 also has Auto-Sensing Transceiver Technology that enables it to switch back and forth between Transmitter and Receiver modes as needed for greater flexibility on the job.

When a hot-shoe or other trigger is detected, it automatically switches to Transmitter mode. With Auto Relay Mode you can easily trigger a remote camera in sync with remote flash. Put a camera where you can't be and use remote TTL or non-TTL lighting at the same time. Expand your coverage and increase your creativity.>
