Questions & Answers

Shopper : Will this lens fill the full frame crop mode on the K-1?LAWRENCE P : No. Well, not at the 10mm range at least. If you google for a review, you can find a great one at a forum dedicated to Pentax line of products.Denis C : This lens is designed to photograph landscapes as it does a great job. You can full crop your subject by opening up the f setting and manual focus the lens and decreasing the shutter speed two settings. Should work fine. Be careful not to use too low a shutter speed as this will cause more bokah in the background of your subject.TODD S : The DA 10-17 is designed for APS-C "crop sensor" bodies. On a Full-Frame sensor body like the K-1, you should expect vignetting (dim/black edges) at 10mm with less at 17mm.WAYNE H : Belown 15mm it will be limited in coverage. 15-17 is mostly usable. It will work if setting it to apsc crop mode.WILLIAM O : The lense only show a circle image in ff mode, it does fill the crop frame which is of course much less than the size of full frame.Jeffrey P : This lens was designed for APS-C format cameras, so it will vignette in full frame on the K-1. It can be used in APS-C crop mode, of course. Some users report good results in full frame but only at the 17mm end.Alfredo L : No. At 10mm you can see a lot of vignette. Even the hood. But from 14mm up, there is no vignette and the lens is totally usable.MATTHEW W : I have this lens and a K-1. At 10-14mm you can see the lens hood in the frame. At 15mm, the entire frame is filled. Note that 15mm on the K-1 looks very much like 10mm does on a K-5/k-3/etc.ERIC B : Yes, the lens will work in crop mode. It will also work on full frame mode at around 14mm with no vignetting.
Denis C : Is it possible to attach a UV filter to this lens?GRAHAM M : No, the curvature of the lens prevents attachment of a filter.
Denis C : Is it possible to attach a UV filter to this lens?ARVIN N : NoLARRY J : No, it is not possible to attach a UV filter. Because it is a fish-eye lens, the front element protrudes thus not allowing a filter to be attached and, because of that, there are no treads to receive a filter.JAMIE B : No, because there is no threads for a filter to screw in to. The lens cap pushes on to the lens.DALE W : No it is not.RICHARD B : Um, I don't think the lens lends itself to attaching anything to the front of it, except the lenscap, which goes over the outside of the barrel. You could always buy a (much) larger filter and, I dunno, tape (?) it on? It won't be a facory approved method, whatever you come up with. Great lens otherwise.JOHN G C : No.Jeffrey P : No. This lens doesn't have filter threads.Dan E : I don't see how. Even if you could physically attach one, vignetting would ruin this great lens'es effect.W. NEAL R : Yes...the lens hood has threads for a 58mm filterIOURI D : no, you can not attache filter to the lens. front flange does not have a thread. unless you want to attach external filter holder, like cockin or lee felters. but not for protection.JAMES C : No. You cannot attach any filter to the lens. Try the internal filters in your camera.GYTENIS B : Just checked it and no, there is no way, you can screw a UV (or any other kind) filter on this lens. Hope it helps, happy shooting ;)Thomas B : No, there is no filter ring. Pretty normal for fisheyes.

Very nice lens!

I would heartily recommend this lens, especially for the hobbyist. Great for use on DSLR Pentax body. I am slowly rebuilding my lens suite to compare to or equal what I used to have. I have always considered a Fisheye Lens as being essential. Great for interesting landscspes. Also great for the home sellor who wants full room shots.

Loving this lens!

Initially, from pictures I had seen in magazines I thought this was a cheap plastic lens. To my surprise it is very well built / a solid feeling (aluminum?) body, a very hi quality rubber coating around the zoom dial. I simply love the lens cap, which is also a hi quality metal which slips on and off with just the right resistance. And using this lens is just a blast!!!

Always in my bag

Nice compact wide angle to fisheye lens. Great for candid shots in tight crowded situations, parties, street photography etc. Also enables one to be creative in landscape photos. Interesting night photography effects.

Nice Specialty Lens

Although this lens can be used as a wide-angle lens at the longer photo lengths, it is really for creating artistic effects as a fisheye lens. It can do things only a fish-eye lens can do, such as take a picture of an entire room from just a few feet away. Objects in the middle of the frame will look normal but the top, bottom and edges will curve, creating interesting effects. I did have some significant purple fringing in pictures of tree limbs but was able to remove some of it in photoshop (but not completely). It is a fun lens and on a recent trip there were several instances where I pulled out the lens for the wide angle of view or a special effect of the fish eye. The lens is lightweight, compact and seems solid.

Great, fun lens!

I orginally wanted a wide angle and rented this lens since the wide angle was unavailable. The lens is a great fun lens and you can do a lot of creative shots. Great for night photography if you have a subject that has a lot of curvature. I am glad I chose this lens over the wide angle since it is able to be less of a fish eye on the 17mm lens.

Fun lens

Truly fish eye lens. Beware of your feet as it cover 180*. It's fun to play & give different perspectives. Never leave my bag.

Sold it once, never again!

I had this lens last year and sold it, at the time it felt TOO wide. Well, I then purchased a sigma 10-20mm, and as nice as that was as well, i couldn't get around the rectilinear distortion. I absolutely love the fisheye, it has great color and contrast, at 17mm there is barely any fisheye effect, and when you go wide the 10mm is amazing. if you put the horizon and any vertical lines through the center it greatly minimizes the fisheye distortion. Overall a wonderful lens for adding some dramatic photos to your collection.

Great distortion to spark creativity

This is a great lens, especially for getting creative shots of often-photographed things, or if a great change of pace to "normal" lenses. I listed the Distortion as a con simply to warn people looking for a "normal" superwide that this isn't it. You'll get lots of distortion, but that's the point of a fisheye. It's awesome getting a full 180 degree view. Lots of CA with this lens, but nothing that can't be corrected in post processing. The thing has the most solid build of all the lenses I currently have. I love it, it hasn't left the camera since I got it nearly a month ago.

good for what it is

It is what it is...a fisheye. The zoom range does give you some flexibility, and images do look good. But oddly I found that when I worked with the distorted images they made me feel seasick. I'm sure this is not a widespread phenomenon, but there ya go. This isn't an indictment of this lens, but for me, fisheye distortion is not something that I can deal with on a regular basis. Also, the "look" seem dated to me. Very 80's. I suppose that'll come back in fashion but it isn't for me. Even at 17mm there is noticeable distortion. So again, if you're into it, you'll love the lens. It is well build and is pretty crisp across the board. Just isn't my cup of tea.

good

For the money a great lens 180* and fisheye 100* and fisheye nearly gone. Not seen a better lens with the angle of view.

Crazy fun!!

This is just a fun lens! If you have the change to spare, it's one to add. It makes the signiture fisheye look, but can also zoom, for added versitility and the ability to decrease the effect. At f3.5-4.5 it's pretty decent for low light too!

Mounted on the PENTAX Digital SLRs, the DA Fish-Eye 10-17mm lens will capture fish-eye imagery with a 180 degree angle of view and a focal length of 10mm as well as super wide-angle performance. Capture images with an expanded perspective including creative deformation of subjects and sharp pan focus that extends throughout the entire frame.

The image circle in DA-series lenses is designed to perfectly match the 23.5mm x 15.7mm size of the CCD used in PENTAX digital SLRs to optimize camera performance.
