Questions & Answers

Joseph R D : IS THIS LENS MADE IN AND SHIPPED FROM THE US?ANDREW R : Not sure I understand your question. Pentax is a Japanese company, their optics (or any of their other equipment) would not normally be manufactured in the US. Adorama is a US based retailer in NYC, NY, equipment ordered from Adorama would normally be shipped from their warehouse (unless specified as "Drop Ship" or other method).
Thomas S : Does this work with Pentax K-1 or is it not optimized for that body?MICHAEL F : Its a nice lens and I own one but it is not designed for the full frame K-1. I understand it will work on the K-1 at longer end (from18-24mm)but then you are losing half of the wide end so whats the point. If you want a good wide angle zoom you will probably have to go with the Pentax 15-30 f 2.8 which is more expensive. I am not sure about 3rd party options. Sigma makes a full frame 12-24 for Pentax but I have heard its not very sharp. Hope this helps.FRANCIS G : The 12-24 is built for a crop (APS-C) sensor body. However, the K-1 will take just about any Pentax lens, including this one, but it will a crop--not the full frame--giving you about a 15 MP image instead of the FF's 36 MP. Pentax has a special website for the K-1, which includes a "users' Laboratory" of user shots with various legacy lenses, including the 12-24, if you want to see some examples.STANLEY H : I liked the 12-24 on my K-3! No personal experience with the 12-24 on the K-1. However, it is not on the compatibility list from Pentax, so if you tried to use it in Full Frame mode at wide end, I am sure you would get vignetting. Of course you can use it in crop mode (where the K-1 uses only the central APS-C sized portion of the sensor.)MATTHEW S : This lens is optimized for APS-C bodies. I believe it will only work in crop mode on the K1

Should have bought it sooner!

I love this lens! I shoot a K3-II and wanted something wider than my 16-85. This lens really expands your capabilities. I've attached some images using this lens. A high recommend. I actually bought it used from Adorama. The rating was D- Demo quality, it really was like opening the box on a new lens. I don't know why the last owner gave up on it, but it's worked out great for me!

Love this lens

I love wide angle for landscape and this is a must have if you are a Pentaxian landscape lover like myself. I have the sigma 8-16 as well and it is wider with some unique distortion, but DA 12 24 is more flat and fits better for rectangular shots. Very handy to carry around too.

Great wide angle zoom lens

I use this lens a lot for landscapes and it works great for me (mostly). The only problem is the front light flare, that in some cases is disturbing. It is a big and heavy lens compared to DA15, but it's also more versatile. The field curvature is quite well handled if shooting horizontally, but starts to bother if the camera is inclined.

Like it

I am a newbie so I dont have a lot to compare it to. This was a tough call between the sigma 10-20 and this one but I decided to go with the Pentax. I am very pleased with it.

Great Lens-exceeds expectations

• Did a lot of research before buying this lens and it is everything I was hoping for. My favorite lens in the 35mm film range were the 24 and 28mm. This lens covers that range with some left on both sides with very little distortion, and the edge to edge sharpness I would expect from a fixed focus lens. So far I have not noticed the "purple fringing" problems that others have. Someday I will buy that 15mm LTD, but I like the ability to zoom instead of switching lenses out the the dust dirt and sand I find myself shooting in many times. [...]

More than I expected

Needed an ultra wide lense and this fits the bill for me. Very sharp into corners, has exceeded all my expectations. Having said that I am but a beginner at this game. Only negative is the size and weight. The hood is enormous and I have trouble fitting into my bag. But worth it given the extra width now available.

Great lens!!!

This lens produces beautiful, well-detailed images at all focal lengths. Flare is well controlled for a wide-angle zoom. I bought it because I needed a wide-angle lens on the small-sensor Pentax body for landscape photography, travel, etc., and I have not been disappointed. The only negative is I had to buy a thin polarizer as my regular 77mm filter vignetted a fair bit at the wide end. I have read reviews that chromatic aberration is a weakness with this lens, but I haven't found it a problem in my photography.

Distortionless performance; expensive

Concur with [...]: excellent image quality, sharp contrast, minimal distortion, minor vignetting at 12mm gone by f5.6 -- a remarkable feat of optical engineering. Do check on substantial and frequent rebate offers by Pentax.

Zoom that a prime fanatic can live with!

I am completely amazed at this zoom. I'm a prime fanatic, but I'm happy with it. Petty much no correction needed in Photoshop's Lens Correction filter - VERY unusual for a zoom, especially such a wide one. Most situations don't need any adjustment. I'm impressed. Just be aware that at full extension it is very long, and the lens hood precludes using the on-camera flash, if that sort of thing is important to you. As a studio photographer, it isn't a concern t me. Also, flare is almost non-existent. I shot directly into the sun, and there was only one teeny reflection. HOW DO THEY DO THAT???

It's a PENTAX glass. "Nuff" said.

It and the K100d were purchased for a Dec 2006 house hunting trip to Ohio as a replacement for my Hasselblad SWC. Avg 3 houses a day over two weeks. Pics were e-mailed to FL for review. Re-shot 2 houses, one was selected and purchased Jan 2007. ALL inside shots were with this lens and camera flash only. It's also a good "walkin around" lens.

Excellent Lens: Ideal for Architecture

True wide angle capability (finally!) with digital, either interiors or panoramics.
