Questions & Answers

Ron L : I would like to know if this lens is as good as the 300mm? It is more expensive even though the 300 is a longer focal length. I am still learning about digital photography. I plan on purchasing a K5 also. RonSTEVEN A : Very good points from Ron, to which I agree. The 16-50mm is also a decent lens, as like the 17-70mm, has minimal distortion and fast aperture at 2.8, though rated better from around f3.5 on. But I find it also does a great job in focusing and image quality.ROBERT P : Hi Ron.. I can tell you the 60 to 250 PENTAX lens is one fantastic versatile lens... it is as sharp as any lens out there. The only down part is its size and weight.. I have not used the 300, but considering the slight more focal length I would go for the 60/250 first.. but if you feel you are well covered already and your primary interest is telephoto..maybe birds etc.. then maybe the 300 would be worth considering. Obviously the 300 is far more specialized. I have found the 60 to 250 to even be a great close focus/macro lens, even though it is not advertised as such. I have the 17 to 70 Pentax and the 60 to 250 and this covers the most common needs.. I use them on a K5 I hope this helps.. BOBSTEVEN A : This is quite a good lens, although fairly big and relatively heavy for a lens only covering the standard zoom range of 60-250mm. Appearances would make one think it was at least capable of focal lengths up to 300 or even 400mm. Quite solid, although my unit had a defect of a loose screw internally and had to be sent back for warranty work, and is now working perfectly. Very smooth zoom and focusing action, although the auto focus a lag initially when having to focus from one end to another. Image quality is good, and minimal distortion and the weather sealing is a big plus. All in all I am very happy with it, although I would really like to see Pentax produce a 100-400mm, however this lens does well for close shots, portraiture etc. but for anything longer in range, the 300mm would be better until Pentax gets more ambitious.STEVEN A : This is quite a good lens, although fairly big and relatively heavy for a lens only covering the standard zoom range of 60-250mm. It is also close in performance to the 300 at 250 but the 300 is better. I had the Sigma 100-300/4 and that was as good as the 300 but much bigger and heavier. The 60-250 has excellent IQ, great size and goes down to 60 so I do not regret getting it - since I've gotten it never even thought of getting the 300 or the sigma again. If you will only use the long end get the 300, if you want the wider focal lengths get this, the IQ is pretty darn close. The K-5 is a superb camera.

Good lens but a little bit short

I bought this lens for replacing my 55-300mm pentax lens because I wanted to have a more faster and sharp lens. So far I am happy with this lens. My biggest concen was the focal length, it is 50mm shorter than the previous telephoto zoom. I could not deceide for a long time which lens I should buy either the zoom or the 300mm single focal lens. I thought 50mm is not a big difference but it is actually. If you want to take wild life, I would recommend the 300mm DA*. But it does not mean this lens is not good. This lens is very good lens for land scape, nature, portrait etc. One negative thing if I should put on here, the zoom ring is not continuaslly smooth. The middle of zoom area is slightly heavier. I looked at the Japanese cosumer site and found the same comment. But it is not a big deal to me.

Versatile zoom you'll want on every photo excursion

Designed to deliver top optical performance, the smc PENTAX DA* 60-250mm F4 ED[IF] SDM is a versatile telephoto zoom lens. Combiningadvanced technologies including super-low-dispersion optical elements, extra-low dispersion (ED) optical elements and PENTAX original lens coatings, this multipurpose lens assures outstanding image quality with clear, high-contrast images, even at image field edges.

It features water and dust resistant sealing for reliable operation in inclement conditions, and a PENTAX Quick-Shift Focus system allowing instant auto-to-manual focus switching. The objective lens surface is treated with the PENTAX original Super Protect (SP) coating. This special fluorine compound is applied to the lens surface through a vapor deposition process creating a surface that effectively repels dust, water and grease, making it easy to wipe off fingerprints/cosmetic marks.

With special lens coatings, ideal curvature and best positioning of optical elements, this lens is designed to optimize digital imaging characteristics, while effectively minimizing flare and ghosting.
