Questions & Answers

MARIANO S : Is the Pentax SMCP 77mm f/1.8 limited also available in silver?ROGER W : In my extended research prior to buying this wonderful, sharp, well made lens, I have not seen it in silver.DARRYL L : The silver 77mm lens are no longer imported into USA by Ricoh to my knowledge. There are a limited of vendors that have them in stock. You might check Amazon or eBay.ANDREW R : I don't see that we offer any other colors at this time.
Shopper : I am planning to buy a KIIs camera in the near future and originally thought, from all of my research, that the appropriate Pentax lenses would be DA and DA* but am now thinking FA lenses are just as compatible. Is this true?MICHAEL S : I have used the 77mm FA lens on both a K5 and a K3. The FA is a full frame lens and the DA are designed for the smaller digital formats. The mountings are compatible and all of the auto features work fine.DAN G : Hello. A Pentax DSLR can use any lense made made by the company. Be it DA, FA or manual. The only difference between them is that the DA lenses lack the apeture ring. If it's a Pentax, it can use it.HOLLY B : Any K mount lens Pentax has made since 1975 is compatible with the K5IIs. Any Pentax lens made before 1975 (M42 mount) will work with an adapter. F, FA, D FA, DA, DA* are autofocus. A series is auto aperture and manual focus; K and M are manual focus. Any lens not part of the DA series are full frame. K mount lenses from other manufacturers will work as well, except ones with the Ricoh pin. The FA 77 is one of my favorite lens and I've taken most of my best pictures with this lens. You will not regret buying this lens. The FA 77, FA 43 and FA 31 are regarded and some of the finest lenses available for K mount cameras.JOHN M : Hi, I am not familiar with the KIIs is that digital or the older film K2? In any case, when it comes to lenses, I am huge fan of the FA series. The 77mm FA is probably in my humble opinion one of the best Lens Pentax has made in a long time. I do not much care for DA lenses as they are tac sharp they lack characteristics I look for in image quality which is not always sharp and perfect. FA lenses will work on most Pentax Cameras. If it is a newer camera just check the tech data and it will say if it is possible to use FA. The FA series is auto focus capable and has all the modern conveniences. The only thing it lacks is that minimal use of glass and tiny aperture hole you find on modern digital lenses. The FA 77 is all glass and a beautiful hunk of glass it is.. The bokeh is amazing, the auto-focus is fast and the lens is made very well. It is expensive though, but it is well worth the money. If you were looking at spending less, I would recommend the 50mm FA f1.4 which is also a excellent piece of glass, just not made as beautifully as the 77, the 50 FA will get the job done and the glass is perfect as well. If you need more information on Pentax lenses I recommend Pentax forums website - they have a breakdown of each lens and camera made by Pentax. I think you will see by the user data that the 77 is most favored by its users :) Sorry I am not familiar with the KIIs but I hope I helped you and your question. JohnSHU S : True.GLEN S : I've used it on my K5 and it is wonderful!CHRISTIAN V : Compatibility is not an issue. You won't find anything better than FA-Limiteds when it comes to colors, depth (3d) and clarity. This after sampling 35+ fine Zeiss, Meyer-Optik, Takumar and Pentax SMC lenses from nearly every decade since the 30's. I carry a K-01 with 43mm for light duty or a K-01 with 31mm and K5 with 77mm for critical events such as weddings or parties. Both cameras fit in a small leather bag and I can carry without discomfort for hours. The DA* 50-135 is practical if you only have one camera, but it's bulky and heavy. Also not as fast in low-light situations. An excellent workhorse, but doesn't quite reach the same level of magic. Cheers, ChristianASEN P : Yes, all FA lenses are fully compatible with K-5 IIs as well as with all current PENTAX K- cameras (I own both K-5 IIs and the SPMC-FA 77).MARCUS P : I would say they are more than compatible… meaning they have great IQ and they are full frame compatible, whenever Pentax decides to release a full frame camera. I own the K5 iis (great camera) and the FA 31mm and 77mm. I have DA 15, 21, 40, and 300mm*. The FA’s are superior to all of those, except the 300mm (which is actually full frame compatible too, even though designated as DA). I use the 31mm the most, because it has a more useful focal length for me. I would say the 77mm is a tad sharper and better shallow depth of field, but that could very well be just due to the fact it is more telephoto than the 31mm. The 77mm is an awesome portrait lens and pretty compact. The FA’s have much stronger builds than the DA’s, generally.NIKIT P : yes. its compatibleJEFFREY H : True. And, if and when Pentax releases a full frame camera, FA lenses will provide full coverage for the larger sensor. The mount is the same for all of these lenses, the DAs were just designed specifically for the smaller sensor.NGUYEN D : Yes, you are correct. ANDREAS C : They are compatible FA are amazing!' I have the 77 and 31. soon the 43 Happy shopping!
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?EMMA M : Needed to replace a lens & looking to take advantage of my k-1ii full frame sensorMELVYN F : Wanted prime fixed at this focal length and this light gathering capacity for my K3II

I love this bag

I love this lens, especially mounted on the K1 mark2 camera. Portrait photos on P mode are excellent. Just the right amount of bokeh in just the right places. Presently it is mounted on my K3 and again just great results. Excellently produced. I love "old school lenses with these results.

Simply wonderful

This is a lense that I often have mounted on one body because the focal length allows capture of landscape details. I favor it because it is quite sharp . Note that this works FF with the Pentax K1. One of my favorite of my ten Pentax lenses.

The Finest AF Lenses

These are film-era lenses with screw-drive autofocus. Pretty quick but make a slight noise. The older SMC coating is also prone to fringing wide-open in high contrast situations. Luckily there's a PP adjustment in your Pentax body to help minimize. Quirks aside, they quite possibly capture the most stunning and vibrant photos on film or your DSLR sensor. Which help explain their continued production and high demand. The FA-77 is the ideal portrait lens. Has that extra degree of subject separation and 3d pop. If you are good at composition, your photos WILL stand out!

Quite simply the best!

The Pentax FA 77mm Limited is quite simply one of the best prime lenses for portraiture that I have ever used. I've used the best lenses from Nikon, Canon, Olmypus, Fujifilm, Leica and Zeiss over the course of my career and if you're looking for a short telephoto prime that is razor sharp even when wide open and renders beautifully smooth bokeh then the FA 77mm Limited from Pentax is a GREAT choice. I also love using this lens in manual focus on Pentax cameras and other cameras (via lens adapter) when shooting video. I always use lenses in manual focus when I shoot video and the focus ring on the FA 77mm is butter smooth and easy to snap into focus. The only "con" with this lens relates to the aging Pentax screw drive AF system when shooting stills. By modern day standards this lens has slow AF like all Pentax screw drive lenses. It's not horribly slow - you can still photograph moving subjects using AF - the AF just isn't as fast as the latest generation lenses with silent AF motor drives built into the lenses.

Perfect

Initially got a bad copy, but the replacement is flawless. AF is spot-on, fit and finish are exceptional. Images pop with amazing 3D clarity and colors, though occasional PF appears in high-contrast situations. A hidden gem in a sea of overpriced, flat-rendering "premium" competitor primes...

Highly recommended

I've only had the lens for a few weeks, but it's terrific. My most successful experiments have been stopped street photographs, delivering awe-inspiring sharpness and a beautiful tonal gradation, and wide open close ups with in focus sharpness contrasting with really lovely bokeh. Others have complained about the lens cap, which is not click on but snug and lined with green felt, falling off. My problem--which is minor--is the opposite. It takes a bit of an effort to get it on and off. Highly recommended

A Pentax Classic

I've felt for years that Pentax lenses are unrated given the line up of superior quality lenses and sharp imaging. The 77mm limited is no exception and is only rivaled by the 31mm and possibly the 40mm Pancake for image quality. This is a must for any Pentax user needing to round out his or her lens choices. In fact, if your being held back by the price, consider sacrificing other lens options for this one which can be used for landscape, portrait and close ups. Pentax only needs to roll out a pro model camera now to really showcase these superb lenses. Don't hesitate. Get one NOW.

One of the best autofous lenes ever

This is one of the only modern autofocus lenses that's built like the classic lenses of old. The contrast and sharpness are unsurpassed. The out-of focus areas ("bokeh") are creamy and smooth, due to the nine aperture blades. Smooth manual focus ring, usable on older cameras as well as the new ultra-electronic ones. Great portrait lens. Perfect for headshots on the digitals, and portraits on the film cameras.
