Questions & Answers

STEVEN S : Two reviewers mentioned safety concerns. One claimed to need hospital care! How can that happen? Elsewhere I read that the process is fairly harmless. What precautions need to be taken? Thanks! One more thing, would I need a scale to weigh out the powder?ADELE A : I have not used the kit. But, have created cyanotype prints from "scratch". In looking at the kit, it is easier, Everything is pre-measured, no scale needed. Directions spell out potential danger very clearly. There's only 4 ingredients. Directions warn that the fumes from Ammonium Dichromate & Ferric ammonium oxalate are dangerous if inhaled. I used the original technique in a fairly small room on a hot day with a large window open. I had no problems. I didn't use goggles, but had glasses on....used gloves. . Dust Mask needed when using mortal & pestal to grind powders. (I like 95N) and yes! wear something over your clothes, in case of accident. You might not want gorgeous blue spots on your handsome white shirt. There appears to be no danger, once the chemicals are dried on the paper and later when soaked to reveal the image. I've used the chemicals under the direction of an accomplished cyanotype artist and had beautiful results. We used this craft in summer camp for several years. Presenting only the dried and treated paper to the children. Enjoy its a beautiful thing..... call the PF, Inc. folks if you need. They were very helpful for me. cheers! AdeleSTEPHEN W : I think there are at least a few sensible precautions one should take when working with any chemicals. While grinding the crystals into a powder I wear a dust mask and nitrile gloves. I also wear nitrile gloves while making prints. I thoroughly clean up chemical spills. I don't let our pets into the area while I'm working. I haven't had any issues. I like the look I get with the new formulations better than what I get with the classic versions. I haven't done cyanotypes for a while, as I mostly do platinum/palladium-toned kallitype prints nowadays. --SteveMARK L : I have worked professionally as a chemist since the late 1980's. It is hard to know what people will do with chemicals or what "allergic" reactions they will have. However, if you follow sensible precautions (safety glasses, nitrile exam gloves, don't smoke/eat around chemicals), these materials are much less dangerous than some items sold in grocery and hardware stores to the general public. The sensitizer will stain clothing, skin, wood, etc. I liked the results from this kit enough to buy the bulk chemicals and make the sensitizer from Dr. Ware's New Cyanotype recipe on larger scale several times. My recollection is that the kit does not require a balance/scale to make but I had one pre-dating my reentry into chemical photography 4-5 years ago.DEBBIE L : Firstly, cyanotype is one of the oldest ways to make images. No body used scales to weigh ingredients and they aren't needed now. Measuring things from the kitchen works just fine. As far as safety concerns, common sense rules. Don't get anything in your eyes. Don't swallow any of the chemicals. Use plastic gloves if you feel like it (I don't...I am pretty old school). I wash my hands after doing anything in the darkroom - it just makes sense. If you are highly sensitive to substances, extra precautions should be used. If you have breathing problems, then by all means, don't sniff anythihng. If your skin is sensitive, use gloves. This isn't surgery. Just do what you need to do given your particular circimstance. I suggest you think about how you want to proceed and take the necessary precautions that you feel are necessary. But I have to say, I've done quite a bit of cyanotype and I can't imagine needing medical treatment.
Shopper : is this in powder or liquid form?AMANDA M : Powder--you mix it up with distilled water as you need it. It's not difficult and nice to be able to use it little by little. You do need light proof bottles though, to keep the liquid in.john c : PowderTRACE R : PowderLAQUITA T : I believe the one you have pictured here is the powder form which does require mixing, but if done correctly, gives better color intensity. However it does involve handling potentially dangerous materials. The premixed kind (liquid) is easier to use, but does have a shelf-life to consider.
Shopper : Why Did You Choose This?DANIEL W : I enjoy to create prints in different waysSHAY C : for a film class I need these chemicals to help me with my printsAdelle W : classMARTIN M : School SupplyDELPHINE A : I am interested in making cyanotypes and I heard this formula was the best choice.IAN E : For use in a photography workshop for 9-12 year olds.EMMA B : classJENNIFER S : I am teaching an Experimental Photography class at the Art Academy of Cincinnati and wanted to see the difference between the original cyanotype chemistry and Dr. Ware's new cyanotype recipe.

This is a powder that needs to be ground, not a liquid!

I have used this product before and it was great, but it was already in powder form! I wish I had known this one needs to be ground with a mortar and pestle! I have to scramble and try to find something to use as a substitute to pulverize it!

Great product for starting out and low volume production

this is a fantastic way to get started printing cyanotypes. mixing the chemicals user friendly and printing is easy and forgiving. if you are hesitant about trying this kit, dont be. I've used four different papers, (all 140#) Bee cold press, Fabriano Cold Press, Fabriano Hot Press and Canson Cold Press (from Walmart). So far, the Canson is my favorite and i can source locally.

The service was great

The service was great. I have not had time to use the cynotype but if it works better than the old I will be very happy.

Easy to use, GREAT results!

I am a photography student in Minnesota. Last spring I was taking a traditional printing alternative processes class. I decided to try cyanotypes. Makes quite a few prints. I used a heavy watercolor paper that added some beautiful texture. Mixing the chemicals was really easy, and the directions were very clear and easy to follow. The mixture makes a beautiful, brighter blue tone! I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in cyanotypes and the process.

new cyanotype; magic for kimmy

was not explicitly clear about the state of sensitizer in product description, which wasn't as scary as the lack of caution or considerations for the hazards of mixing chemicals in solution's directions.

Great stuff but be careful

I think if you have the time to work with the product, your results will be great. I do want to warn you however that there are not enough safety warnings listed in the instructions. Becasue even though I was as careful with the chemicals as I could be I still ended up being hospitalized for Cyanide poisoning!!!!!!!

• FORMULARY NEW CYANOTYPE KIT was formulated by Dr. Michael Ware. The formula was published in the Jan/Feb. 1997 issue of Photo Techniques. According to Dr. Ware, The "New" Cyanotype process uses a single sensitizer solution, having a long shelf life, to make prints of an excellent stable blue color and a long tonal response. And with a speed much faster than the traditional process." It also loses little, if any, blue color in the final wash water, and is much more suited to a greater variety of papers.
• This kit will produce approximately 50 8 x 10 prints if the sensitizer is applied with a glass coating rod, makes 100 ml (3 1/3 oz.) of solution.
