Questions & Answers

Je O : Can this be used to make photo emulsion for screen printing?ROSE G : That's what I bought it for. I did a lot of research and learned this was the exact product to buy, but I haven't used it yet. So my knowledge is second-hand ¯\_(ツ)_/¯LORENZO I : Could be, but is not advised. Potassium Dichromate is a seriously dangerous chemical that might be carcinogenic if used and/or disposed incorrectly. Buy a pre-made photo emulsion kit instead, more expensive but safer.BRIAN S : yes! that is what i have used it for :) i am no expert and the process seems pretty difficult yet i think it is about the same as the store bought version's process
Shopper : what does it look like?RAPHAEL L : It's a crystalline orange powder.DONALD B : It's orange powdered crystals.ALAN G : red-orange crystals, not much over 1mm in any dimensionJAMES R : The potassium dichromate from Photographers' Formulary is in the form of an orange granule.GERALD R : It is a red crystalline material, and a known carcinogen, so be careful and wear gloves. I diluted it with water. I used it for "staining" wood. It darken most woods and produces a red mahogany finish.MATT B : It looks like bright redish orange sea salt.
Eric H : How to make it become a liquid?RAPHAEL L : Just add water! (distilled is best)CLANCY B : distilled water... it is toxic to lungs, kidneys, etc use rubber gloves and dust mask..DARRAGH S : Mix it with water. The formula for gum bichromate is: Part A 20mL Prepared Gum Arabic Solution 2-3g tube water color with high density of pigment Part B 13g Potassium dichromate 80mL distilled water at 125 degrees F Approx. 20mL distilled water at room temp to make 100mL solution. Mix part A with part B just prior to use.GERALD R : It is soluble in water. I added about 2 tablespoons of the material in a quart of water. That may have been more concentrated than I needed, but I could not find any dilution formula. It was just what I needed to darken the current grade of mahogany that is sold by our lumber yards.DONALD B : Mix 1tea spoon of Potassium Dichromate to one quart of water. This is how we use it to oxidize mahogany before finishing.NATHAN W : Normally you will use this as part of a photoemulsion (so...you would apply this to a surface, let it dry, then expose it to light). Like all photo chemicals, make sure to take proper precautions when using this product.JAMES R : You'll need to know what percentage of solution you want before you begin. If you want a 10% solution, you'd need to dissolve 10 parts of potassium dichromate in 100 parts water (example: 100g potassium dichromate in 1000ml water). I'd recommend using distilled water if you're going to use the solution for photography. To dissolve the chemical you'll want to heat about 3/4 of the total amount of water you need to around 95 degrees F. Transfer the heated water to a graduated cylinder and slowly stir in the premeasured potassium dichromate. Once the chemical is completely dissolved, add room temperature water to bring the total volume to the disired level. Stir well to make sure the solution is combined. Example: If I'm making a 10% solution with a total volume of 1000ml. I would heat 750ml of water and dissolve 100g of chemical into the water. I would then add enough room temperature water to bring the volume to 1000ml.
