Depending on your requirements, you can switch between hardware- or software-controlled RAID modes. I really appreciate Adorama’s service and competitive (the cheapest I found) pricing. Also, their return service is perfect, as I had to return the Synology I originally chose. 

The speeds on this at RAID 5 & three 8TB Barracuda drives are exactly as promised (220MB/sec) and setup was super easy. Happy customer

Synology TR-004 - great value

Looks like a great little DAS! For my use case, however, there was one dealbreaker: Encrypted volumes can not be used directly from a computer (i.e. not via a QNAP NAS). I wanted to use this device as a NAS backup, but also be able to access the files directly in case of an emergency. This limitation didn’t seem clear in the literature. I ended up buying a lower-end QNAP NAS for my purpose, which seems to be the only solution to my problem.

For <$ this QNAP DAS serves its purpose. I have plenty of NAS devices from QNAP, Synology, Thecus but I did need or want a NAS for this project. 

No doubt it's not enterprise grade equipment with plastic sleds, cheap locks, etc. but it's not marketed or priced for this type of use either. 

I had no issues with the fan, the firmware update was effortless and I installed 4 10TB+, set a raid up with the switches then wiped it our and reset with software control and it was super fast and easy.

Like all these types of devices, you want to make sure your drives (especially the higher capacity drives) are compatible with the unit. (this is easily found on the QNAP website). Drives that are not listed may or may not work so buyer beware. 

Granted I am only 24 hours in use with this but so far, I think it's a great deal if you need a multi-bay DAS

Meets my needs nicely

I needed something with high capacity with RAID protect and fast storage. This was a bargain at $ I put 4 8TB in RAID 5 giving me 24TB usable space. I was getting around 180 MB/s using USB Type C to my Dell XPS Type C connection.

Qnap TR-004: Not impressed, noisy fan, quality issues, firmware issues

Qnap TR-004: Not impressed, noisy fan, quality issues, firmware issues.

Fan howls, groans, moans, growls & squawks (only quiet when inactive & at lowest speed).

No matter what it is connected to (another QNAP device, PC, or laptop), it repeatedly & intrusively nags about a firmware update, but then declares it is already up-to-date. QNAP website has no newer version.

The quality of this device is lackluster, compared to the also plastic/flimsy TS-451+.

Met my expectations for a fairly priced QNAP expansion enclosure. Plastic locks & keys lend a "cheapness" to appearance even if they do the job...
