Hardware setup was easy, but the software was not. The start with firmware load was buggy and ran for 24 hours before I stopped it and started over. The browser functions I have tried ONLY WORK WITH CHROME. That to me is an unacceptable limitation. Cloud access is unnecessarily complicated for an "entry level" NAS. I should have spent more to get a better item.

According to reviews, appears to be solid entry level NAS. Multifunctional gui with lots of info. Recommend viewing online instructional videos to understand functions if this is your 1st. Fast shipping from Adorama.

I had hoped for simpler. But, QNAP support was present and fantastic, so I got through the process. I would have liked not to lose so much storage space to the device (I have about 1.6TB with 2TB drives in the RAID). Other than that, no issues.

If you are planning to do a RAID setup for photo back. This is a good option for beginners and very easy setup. There are many YouTube videos on the actual setup. The Photo search option/tagging the photos is a good option to find the persons in multiple photos. Also I had an issues with the first device that was sent to me, but Adorama Service Agents were very helpful to get my case resolved at the earliest, even during Holiday Seasons. Much Appreciate the patience of the service agents.

I needed basic backup storage and this gets me where I need to be. We filled ours with 24terrabytes worth of storage and backed up everything. Desktops, notebooks, cellphones, tablets, childrens handhelds...absolutely everything. We dont worry about data lose anymore.

Great value for the price. Nice Interface providing some info, wish it just locked the UI to your screen size. I can hear the platters spinning at various times throughout the day, not sure exactly why.. but aside from that its worked great.

I bought both this and the Synology DS220j. They are both weak haha. So let me back up a bit and explain what my intentions were with NAS. I wanted a Google Photos replacement. That meant I wanted a place to put all my pictures/videos and still be able to conveniently access it which in this case means accessing it on a regular basis from my phone (I get nostalgic about my daughter as a baby haha). Now that you know my intentions here's what happened. I did research (thanks Nascompares on Youtube) and came to the conclusion that Synology got better software and QNAP got better hardware. In this case, exactly the same hardware but QNAP has 2GB vs Synology's 512MB. My intentions were simple so I figured the 512MB from Synology would be sufficient and I always prefer superior software over hardware. The Synology setup was EASY (way easier than QNAP) because it makes a lot of choices for you and the installation was a breeze. I was very impressed, very Apple like feel where you feel like your grandma could do it (though realistically probably not). Next up I installed Synology Moments, the whole reason why I wanted a NAS. It seemed to be better than QNAP's QuMagie (and it probably is) at least according to my research (another thumbs up for nascompares). The problem however was that when transferring my 800GB worth of pictures and videos, the transferring speed crawled!!! I think I left it on for 3 days and it had only done 200GB or something. I thought this was weird and noticed that it was also indexing all the pictures/videos which used up a LOT of the resources. I paused the indexing and it helped briefly but then it stopped. I could never get above 12MB/s transfer speeds on it. In essence, it was unusable. I even tried transferring to an external hard drive and plug it in directly to the Synology DS220j and speed did not improve so definitively something software wise was causing issues. Luckily I had bought this one as a backup (they were both on sale). In truth I had debated between the two for a while but decided on Synology's reputation of ease of use as I'm getting older but when Synology failed me I was very happy I had a QNAP available to try. First, the QNAP setup was quite confusing and not so straight forward. I'm above-average when it comes to technical knowledge but the guide stumbled me multiple times e.g. the one I remember the most was picking between Static, Thick or Thin volume. I honestly still don't quite understand what the heck Thick/Thin volume is (sounds like it creates virtual volumes that are easier to delete/create), but what I do know is that Static is the more traditional way of doing things and I was not planning on messing with my partitions all that much. Anyway, after much head scratching it was finally up and running, and immediately I started moving things over and the speed was A LOT faster. I think I got 50MB/s, which I think is about the limit of my computer's wifi chip. In about half a day or a day, everything was transferred BUT the indexing did take another 2-3 days. So yeah, very weak NAS. I am however greedy enough to be patient with that and so I let it do its thing. It did crash on me once during that period, but upon reboot it seemed to recover itself well, the indexing continued from where it left off instead of starting from the beginning *phew*. Finally I started up QuMagie and loved how it sorts and groups my pictures/videos. I do think the facial recognition could be better, it thinks I am 10-20 different people apparently (I still haven't finished correcting all the duplicates). Overall it does feel like it runs with less issues than the Synology, the Synology slowed down a lot e.g. accessing resource monitor would sometimes take minutes possibly due to the low amount of RAM. QNAP does feel a bit more buggy, when it crashes, you don't quite know exactly why. The QNAP is far prettier (at least imo) and noticeably smaller too. For the price, I am very happy as a Google Photos replacement. Putting all my stuff there would cost me $99 a year (2TB plan). I got a 3TB setup running for less than $200 (I already had one 3TB HDD) so in 2 years I already made my money back and I plan to keep this for a lot longer than that. To recap, I am very happy. The installation process was do-able though not head-scratching free. I love that I can setup a RAID 1 to get a backup of my backup. HDD can and probably will fail on you, so it's a great piece of mind knowing that the data will be reliably present when you need them. I love that it has a bunch of built-in apps as well as the equivalent apps for phones/tablets. In essence, I got the Google Photos replacement I wanted for a very affordable price.

Works as intended, no issues and set up was fairly simple. I threw two on-hand 2.5" ssds and within 30 minutes had them backing up my files.

Attractive and great functions. I installed two Ironwolf 2TB drives and an external 240MB SSD. Nice to have everything in one place and backed up. Got tired of replicating files from one computer to another, so now everyone has everything available instantly.

It works. It’s reliable. One star off because QNAP doesn’t seem to understand that people buying this entry level device need a lot more hand holding and explanations of all this does and how to make it do those things. They assume you know what all their terminology means. It makes the setup and use unnecessarily difficult.

Great value for the money. Works as expected. No frills, just does what it is supposed to do and does it well. Very sufficient for home use. I had a more expensive model before from 2015, but I never actually used those additional bells and whistles (e.g. double Ethernet ports, eSata port). This model has exactly what I use - nothing more, (mostly) nothing less. The QTS interface is fairly easy to use as well, lots of utility apps (e.g. local and cloud backups, virus monitoring, media management, power schedule management). The only thing I wish it had that my previous model did is a USB connection to a UPS, so that it can shut down gracefully during a power outage. That said, it is still connected to the UPS - just that it wouldn't know to shut down. Then again, that doesn't happen very often in any case.

Great price for an entry-level NAS. Great that it has USB 3.x ports on it for connecting a TR-004 expansion unit.

Very good quality, easy to set up, a bit beyond my current knowledge of NAS usage but its a fun journey. Great beginner NAS. One quirk i have is that QNAP doesn’t let you edit the files of applications you download, so if you’re moving a plex library to run off of the NAS, you will have to use WinSCP or SSH to tunnel into the directory of plex and move your files over manually as the file explorer in the QNAP dashboard doesn’t allow you native access to these files.

Excellent quality NAS. This unit is superior to the Synology 2 bay which has less ram and costs more. The software is great and it is very quiet. For the money I have no complaints for a simple 2 bay unit. Very easy to get up and running and manage. Would easily buy again.

I had a pair of 6TB HDDs laying around, and this NAS was perfect for them. I'm a very basic user but everything seems to work just fine. Software isn't overly complicated. This should be a nice low(er) power alternative to a dedicated NAS PC.

QNAP TS-230
By BINU V.

By AARON Y.
Excellent quality NAS. This unit is superior to the Synology 2 bay which has less ram and costs more. The software is great and it is very quiet. For the money I have no complaints for a simple 2 bay unit. Very easy to get up and running and manage. Would easily buy again.
