Questions & Answers

Khimberly C : Do I need to purchase the battery power pack to power this flash up??ROBERT W : Yes you do KHANG K : That is correct. The Quantum flashes required external power supply although it does not have to be Quantum brand batteries.Nicole M : yes. It is sold separately.
Shopper : is the 160 guide number listed in feet or meters?ANDREW R : Guide number for this unit is in feet.
Eduardo L : We have 2 Canon 7D cameras, can we used this flash with camera flash (body flash) with out adapters?. Will be nice, we buy 2 of the system. ,thanks EDRACHELLE J : Hello Eduardo, I hope this helps. The Trio Qflash for the Canon camera are EXCELLENT flash units. To answer the question, no! Not without an adapter. If you're planning on using the Quantum QF8C Qflash TRIO, off camera. Your Canon Flash will not fire the Qflash without a transmitter. You can mount the Trio on a tripod, off camera but you will need a transmitter such as (Digital Transceiver FW10w) for each camera that you plan on using to fire the Trio (the Trio has an eternal receiver, that way your cameras can "talk" to the Trio to fire.) You will need to purchase ("PC Sync to mini cable)", for each camera that you plan on use this set up) along with one for the camera's to talk to the Transceiver. See my example below. As an example, this is what I do, I shoot the Trio QF8C on my Canon 5D mark II, I also use the T5D-R as a Second flash. In order for the Trio unit to "Talk" to second flash, (I had to purchase separately,) the FreeXwire Digital Receiver FW7Q. Now you can use a second Camera with a Transmitter and still use a Canon Flash like the 580Ex mounted to that camera in the hot shoe then you well need to purchase a transmitter such as the FreeXwire FW10w and use the PC sync cable outlet on your camera attach it to a second camera and you can fire the T5D-R or the TRIO as a Second flash too. The Trio will not fire the second flash either without a Receiver on the second a second flash. This might seem confusing but it is the solution you'll need. If you mount a Trio on camera it can also trigger all your other Trios as well. What I have found what works the very best is to Get a Quantum Pilot to trigger your Trios. I use a pilot on each of my camera bodies ( no need to change lens this way) and have them fire off my remote TriosELENA O : you need just flash and any of turbo battery or Impact Mini LiteTrek battery (it's give you more flashes per charge than Turbo3)

A Gem in the Rough

The Trio is really a Gem in the rough. Since I purchased my first one at Adorama, I have gone through several revisions to the Firmware to resolve some pretty important issues to me.Just to let you know, This is a great piece of equipment with great support but, it needs refinement in my opinion. There are issues that are being resolved as I write this review.1. Qttl Mode works great but, if you want to access HSS you have to go through 3 menus to set it and once set, if you go to another mode such as Auto Fill and then want to go back, you will have to set it again.2. There are really useless menu's that need to be modified. Because all modes use a shared menu system so you have menus such as sensor limit while in Qttl mode.3. I personally had an issue with the flash reporting my Auto Fill+1 as overexposed, which is the flash just reporting the condition set by the user, when in fact the exposure was NOT overexposed. This was addressed by Quantum and a Firware update resolved this issue.4. They are currently working on resolving issues with the flash at this point. The issues that I found are:Program modes locked into slots do not remain that way if you make a change at all. This means that the system overwrites the program that you set and sometimes at a very inappropriate time. The shoe mount can have issues, at least mine did and can come unlocked making communication with the flash impossible, and you can't fix it yourself so, you better carry spares. They have addressed this issue and claim to have fixed it. We will see. There was a situation that the firmware has resolved. The flash will lock up if you have it mounted to the camera and have the camera on and then set your flash to a program slot that is meant for off camera flash. It will throw a fit if you accidentally hit a program mode that has a stored off camera setting while it is on the Camera in local mode.Like I said before. this is a gem in the rough and I am sure the issues will soon be resolved but, I don't think this flash should have been released until there was appropriate testing by professionals to help them work out the kinks.[...]

I love the Trio on my Canon 5D MK II

I use this in conjunction with 2 T5d flashes, each with a receiver attached. The Trio solves the problem of where to put a transmitter since it is built in. It triggers the other units flawlessly. I use my Quantums a lot outside for weddings and portraits, often diffused with the small softboxes, and use Autofill a lot. Quite often I'll use the Trio on camera as a fill with one T5d on a stand adding to the main light and the 2nd T5d on a stand with a bare bulb behind the subjects for a rim light. The F stop and ISO set on the camera are picked up by the remotes. I often have to work quickly and don't take the time for a lot of meter readings. Setting the F stop to low or the lights too close will blow out the highlights and setting the minus fill amounts doesn't seem to work well without a lot of extra diffusion.

About Quantum QF8C

FEATURED REVIEWS

I love it, still learning all of the functions.

The Quantum Qflash TRIO QF8 combines a Qflash head with built-in Freexwire TTL radio and QTTL adapter for your digital camera. Slip it onto the camera hot-shoe, connect a Turbo and go. TRIO's radio sends TTL commands to other remote Qflash TRIO's. Configure distinct modes and settings of remote Qflash TRIO's from the on-camera TRIO. And, the on-camera TRIO controls older Qflash models mated to Freexwire receivers. Control an unlimited number of remote Qflash units.

Radio QTTL signals from TRIO do not require line-of-site like camera optical links. With a Qflash TRIO master flash on the camera hot shoe and Quantum TRIO's or QFlash 5d-R's as remote flashes there is no need to worry about where to mount a radio transmitter or receivers, worry about loss of battery power, or whether a sync cord will fail at an inappropriate moment. Quantum's Freexwire radios are either built-in or directly attached to their Qflash. When your Turbo powers up a Qflash, power is also supplied to the built-in or attached Freexwire. There is no other radio controlled flash system that can transmit wireless camera TTL information to remote flashes up to 600 feet away.

Qflash Studio Quality Light
TRIO comes with parabolic reflector for producing studio quality light. It is removable to quickly interchange for bare bulb, wide angle, diffused, and telephoto reflector

USB Port for Firmware Updates
A USB port has been added to Qflash TRIO for easily downloading of updates, plus TRIO has all the same features as other Qflash models including: Manual, Auto, Auto-Fill, TTL, and Program Modes (Pre-Sets). TRIO is powered by Quantum's line of Turbo battery packs.

Pros worldwide depend on Qflash for high quality rapid flash firing... standing up to intense assignments that leave other shoe mounts gasping. Now, get Qflash rugged reliability in the shoe mount TRIO
