Questions & Answers

RONDA L : Does the Sekonic L-308s work with the Flashpoint 320M studio lights?NAK K : yes.ROBERT B : The L308s is a light meter that measures both ambient (continuous, as in sunlight or from a lightbulb, both reflective (dome retracted) or incident (using the white dome) light mode) or flash intensity (as with a strobe, hot shoe attached flash, or a studio mono light or studio flash system in incident mode using the white dome). As such, it does not matter what brand strobe or flash it is reading, so it should work perfectly fine in helping you to determine proper exposures using the Flashpoint 320M studio light. It will work with any brand of flash. The basic procedure is to point the flash at the light source from the subject position, make a test exposure, and read the measured exposure from the meter, and set the camera at the f-stop indicated. You can also measure the output from multiple lights and adjust the light intensity from each light source to balance the light ratios as desired, but you can do a bit of research on how to do this by searching the web, or getting a book on lighting technique, it goes beyond your basic question. So, to recap, this meter will work fine with the Flashpoint 320M monolight.
GEORGE E : Can I control flash power with this meter and if so what receiver do I need to buy and will the receiver work with any studio flash and is there a matching receiver for the camera hot shoe?JAMES B : no you cannot control flash power. this is just a great flash meter that measures reflective or ambient or flash lighting.THOMAS F : I don't think the meter has that function, though I haven't tried to use it in that way.ANTHONY P : the flash power cannot be controlled with this meter .SARAH A : Not that I know of. Believe you need a few steps up with the pocketwizard add onJOHN C : The L-308S can not be used to control the flash power of a studio light. It is a basic light meter only.
Shopper : Match with Canon Cameras?ERNESTO R : Yes. Just transfer reading from meter to camera.ROBERT B : This meter can be used with ANY camera, digital or film (or other) that has adjustable exposure controls. The same can be said of any light meter. Most Canon cameras, except for some basic point & shoot models, have manual exposure settings. The flash feature of this meter will also measure the flash, however, the auto features of the built in flash will do the same. This meter is particularly good when off camera flash not controlled by the camera auto-circuits is used (i.e. manual flash exposure) where the f-stop can be set manually, and the shutter brought down to the proper sync speed for flash (depends on camera). It can also be used for measuring lighting ratios, however, this may not be something you are doing at this point based on your question, but the meter will grow with your needs. When used properly, very precise and consistent exposures can be measured. Incident light measurements under appropriate lighting are very accurate, and far less influenced by subject reflectivity or non-averaging light level scenes (such as someone wearing a white dress in a bright background or in snow, where the camera reflected meter can be fooled into improper exposure).JASON M : Hello :) Excellent match for Canon Camera. My wife and I shoot Canon 50D's. It's a Good match for any DSLR really. My wife and I both used this meter in the studio during photography college. It performed flawlessly and continues to serve us well. The only thing it lacks is a backlight. Can be a bit hard to read the display in a dimly lit studio. We now have the L-358. Hope this is helpful.THOMAS F : Asked if this light meter would match with a Canon camera, there is no electronic connection between the two but the meter accurately measures light and is useful when comparing the exposure reading with the camera's exposure meter.JAMES E P : Haven't used it very much yet. Don't know about Canon, only have Nikon.

Best Value Light Meter

This is the second Sekonic L-308 I've owned -- I sold the first one, after about a decade of use, when I decided I didn't need a light meter any more, Then, I did -- so I bought a new one. This meter is a great value: For under 200 bucks you get incident, reflected and flash metering; the latter function saved my bacon many times when shooting in the studio. (Only drawback is, it's not wireless -- you have to plug in the cord.) I guess there's a cine function, too, but I've never used it. The meter fits in a vest or jacket pocket, runs for a long time on a single AA battery (I use alkaline, a rechargeable might work OK), is easy to switch functions, has a sliding incident dome that moves with a flick of the thumb. All in all, it's a great light meter. If you need a meter and don't want to spend big bucks for a fancy "pro" model, the L-308S is a good choice.

This is a good meter...

This is a good meter to start with. For landscape work it's great! For in studio work it's good too, but lacks one thing. A wireless flash trigger. So better either get a cord, or upgrade to another version. It's is still very accurate and works well!

Great meter, controls could be better

I use this with both medium format cameras that don't have a meter and with studio lighting. Functionality wise, it's 5 stars, but I have a couple gripes about the controls. First the good. It's easy to use and can report f-stop for a fixed speed or report EV (great for hasselblad) which is a good system to work in if you want to trade off shutter, aperture, ISO. I get excellent results on my d750 in manual mode (160 @ f/8 - 11) and Flashpoint Streaklights with this meter. It also seems to work well in reflected light mode by sliding the white dome off the sensor. It's an average reading, not a spot meter. The bad. The button to press to take a meter reading is very close to the up/down buttons that set your shutter speed. It's too easy to accidentally press one and not notice you've changed the speed. Cumulative errors could occur sending your f-stop or EV value way off. There's no beep. I found the manual a little difficult to follow. Basically, the meter can work in one of 4 modes. Reflected light (where you move the white dome off), incident light (you hold it by the subject using ambient light), flash (auto-detect), flash (via cable sync). I've used it in all the modes except cable sync and it functions well.

Takes Non-Rechargable Batteries

I bought the light meter last week. When I started to read the instructions, it warned not to use rechargeable batteries; for instance the Ni-MH I have. A slight matter for some, but I really do not feel like carrying around yet another type of battery in my camera case. I will be inquiring about a return next week.

Very nice tool

Nice little meter, vary basic in its abilities and it is based on shutter speed. I'm pretty new to using a light meter and this is the perfect one to start with. Functional, accurate and low cost compared to the big boys.

All I need

The L-308S is a good basic flash/ambient meter. I've owned a previous similar model, as well as a high-end Sekonic, and have found them to generally be reliable, and probably as durable as can be expected for a light meter. I don't use a meter much anymore, and this one serves my needs perfectly.

nice meter

This is a fairly small but accurate meter. It tucks nicely in my bag, is quick and handy to whip out for a reading or two, and is simple to use. My only complaint is that it has a cheap plastic feel, where you get that creaky, slightly hollow plastic sort of feel when you hold it. But other than that, it's relatively inexpensive and it does what the more costly and larger units do, so I'm not complaining too much.

Excellent

I've actually owned two of these. I used it less with my Leica M6 TTL, but I now own an M2, which does not have its own light meter. I use it to measure every picture I take. It is an essential part of my kit, and the quality of this meter is why I didn't even bother looking at other ones when I needed a new one.

Pleased with performance

This meter is quite easy to use and has worked well for my portraiture. The only difficulty I have encountered is that it is easy to accidentally change settings. Accuracy has been consistently right on.

Great first meter

This is good first meter for portraits and some general landscapes. If you need more accurate readings for landscapes or have the abililty to sync with your studio lights then you need to step up to a more full function meter. But this meter works great for its size and functions.

Accurate & Lightweight!

When I was in my studio I struggled to get the lighting perfect I was always trying to balance the reflective light with the flash now my frustration is over because this light meter helps me nail the exposure right the first time. I have used it on outdoor location shoots and it seems to work great there to. I love the small size because I can put it in my back pocket while moving around to a different location. I would recommend this all photographers but especially to those that are new to light meters because this light meter is very easy to use. I give it 10 Stars and a A++.

Good value

This light meter has all the features of more expensive models. The drawback is that the construction is a little on the delicate side. But, I tend to keep good care of my photo stuff so I suspect it will provide me with years of service. Great for outdoor photography when trying to match a flash with a bright background and studio work.

The best!

Works instantly, no waiting for a needle to settle, no squinting at tiny numbers. Absolutely accurate. For street shooting, one incident reading in the sun, one in the shade, you're done. Reads studio strobes for digital too. Completely worth the money.

Fabulous Meter!

I read reviews after reviews on this unit before I bought. i read many internet posts that said "light meters are not needed anymore since the digital age. Well I am glad that I didn't listen to most of them...because I went ahead and bought this meter from Adorama and it has helped my photography about a million per cent. I get the perfect exposure ever time. We make dogbeds at work, so we take photos with dogs in them. I don't get a lot of chances to capture a great shot, sometimes i only get one chance. This meter gives me perfect camera settings to catch that "one moment". I only wish I would have bought one 2 or 3 years ago. This is a fantastic unit and works great in the studio and on location. I will probably buy another to insure that i am never without one!! Buy this meter..and your life will be easier!

Great flash meter

By HOWARD R.

Great light meter that works with strobes. Must have when you venture into off-camera strobe lighting. Critical for using the Manual mode of your camera. Also useful for low light situations when you want to double check your cameras internal light meter.

I would buy this product again and again

By liltaz

I use this product for studio, on location architectural shoots and landscape. I always get accurate results. I would recommend this flash, it works in all lighting situations that I've encountered.

Sekonic L-308S Flashmate
The pocket-sized Sekonic L-308S Flashmate is the smallest and lightest digital light meter in the Sekonic line-up. It is designed to read ambient or flash exposures in either reflected or incident modes, and it displays accurate exposure readings in full, half, or third-stop increments to mirror the exposure settings of today's DSLR and film cameras.

The Sekonic L-308S delivers accurate exposure readings in full-, half-, or third-stop increments to mirror the exposure displays of most popular cameras. When set to full-stop mode, exposures are displayed in tenth-stop increments with a repeat accuracy of +/- 0.1 EV.

The LCD screen is designed to emulate the look and feel of its bigger brother, the Sekonic L-358 flash meter. Exposure data and related information are displayed using large type and easy-to-read icons, perfectly legible in even low-level lighting conditions.

incident or reflected light measurement
Reflected light readings are captured at a receiving angle of about 40 degrees for subject readings made at the camera. Slide the L-308S's built-in Lumisphere over the silicon photo diode for incident light exposure readings of three-dimensional subjects. Snap on the included Lumidisc over the sensor for metering flat artwork or measuring contrast and/or exposure ratios within a scene.

Ambient / Flash measurement
Incident or reflected ambient light readings can be made with the L-308S over a wide range of lighting conditions at shutter speeds from 60 seconds to 1/8000th of a second and apertures from f/stops of f/1.4 to f/90.9. Flash at speeds from 1 to 1/500th of a second can be measured cordlessly or wired using a separate accessory PC cord. Flash and ambient readings are automatically calculated to display the proper exposure for the combination.

Accurate measurements
Exposures accurate down to a tenth-of-a-stop for both ambient and electronic flash light readings are available in full-stop mode. The L-308S can also display shutter speeds and apertures in half or third-stop increments to mirror the exposure settings on your camera with a repeat accuracy of +/- 0.1 EV. For cinema applications frame rates can be set from 8 to 128 frames per second. ISO sensitivity can be set from 3 to 8000 in third-stop increments.

Compact size and lightweight
The L-308S is the smallest digital flash meter for reflective and incident light readings in ambient or electronic flash lighting conditions. It is compact and light enough to fit into a shirt pocket, yet versatile enough to meet virtually every photographic demand. The L-308S is powered by a single AA battery and weighs only 3.4 ounces (95g). Its measurements are a compact 2.5"W x 4.3"h X 0.9"D (63mmW x 110mmh X 22mm )

Accessories
