Review Summary

I regularly shoot a Canon R5. But, as I travel more, I decided I need a travel alternative. The GR IV does the trick. Definitely "good enough" for experiences likely to be shared with others electronically. As you probably know, the autofocus is not in the same league as my Canon. But the 2.8 is good enough for the occasional portrait like photo. Most travel photos are at F8 where focus is not as important. Though the snap focus is definitely a thing for most people, I usually tap the screen if it doesn't hit focus immediately.

The good parts about it are really good! It's easy to take everywhere, takes great images when it's in focus, and for the most part it makes me very happy. But it has all these little software nits -- like randomly changing my aperture and shutter speed in P-Mode with auto-ISO, or changing focus at close-but not-macro distances in back-button focus mode. And the AF is still not great. So good and to me worth having, but far from the great it could be.

The Ricoh GR IV is a premium point-and-shoot camera with a fixed lens that doesn’t sacrifice image quality despite its compact size. Street and travel photographers have long raved about the GR lineup, now on its 4th version. At its core, the Ricoh GR IV uses a new 25.7-megapixel sensor, an upgrade from the previous model. A 28mm full-frame equivalent lens with a focal length of f/2.8 offers sharp, high-contrast images even in low light. This model also features 6.0 stops of image stabilization, a massive improvement for handheld shooting. The Ricoh GR IV is designed for the photographer who needs a lightweight camera that takes up very little space, and is quick and easy to use to grab high-quality images and video.
25.7 Megapixel Sensor
A new 25.7 BSI CMOS Sensor with a back-illuminated design offers better image quality and reduced noise in both DNG and JPEG recordings. Paired with the updated GR ENGINE 7 processor, you can achieve better low-light performance, faster startup time, and quicker, more accurate focusing than its predecessor.

28mm f2.8 Lens
The wide-angle, 28mm full-frame equivalent lens equipped on the Ricoh GR IV is perfect for travel, street, and everyday shooting, where you want to capture the whole scene. Crop modes of 35mm and 50mm offer a slightly narrower field of view, all with the same f2.8 lens. An internal ND filter can reduce exposures by two stops for creative images, and a dedicated macro mode can capture subjects from 2.4” to 4.7” from the lens. Compared to the previous model, this lens delivers sharper images, is smaller and lighter, and focuses faster and deploys quicker.

More Reliable Autofocus
With fast, light performance in mind, the Ricoh GR IV features improved focusing speed and reliability with the GR ENGINE 7 and an improved lens to nail the focus. Face and subject recognition have been improved, and more accurate autofocus can be expected in low-light shooting conditions. A Full Press Snap function allows the photographer to override autofocus instantly and have the lens immediately focus to a preset distance, perfect for spur-of-the-moment shots that happen quickly.

6.0 Stop Shake Reduction
The Ricoh GR III was equipped with a 3-axis stabilization system, which has since been improved to a 5-axis system in the GR IV. This results in roughly 6.0 stops of shake-reduction, ideal for handheld shooting in low light.

In-Camera Image Controls
While the camera is capable of shooting DNG photos for later editing, many photographers may want to produce share-ready images straight out of the camera. The Image Control function offers 12 distinct modes that apply preset looks to a scene, such as yellow-, green-, or black-and-white tones. You can adjust saturation, contrast, hue, key, and grain to perfectly customize each image and make it feel like your own.

Body Design
The GR IV is even slimmer than its predecessor, resulting in a wider, more comfortable grip. The same lightweight magnesium alloy build is used to create a camera body that looks good and feels even better. A new, larger-capacity DB-120 battery is used, which can deliver 250 shots per charge, up from 200 on the GR III. A USB-C port can be used for both charging and data transfer. For those coming from an older Ricoh GR model, you’ll notice that the layout of control buttons and dials has been slightly redesigned for easier operation. A rear 3.0” 1.04m touchscreen LCD monitor features a special setting for use in the outdoor sun, boosting the brightness so you can see the screen even in harsh lighting.
