Review Summary

I had this same lens before I purchased this one. I had severely injured my other lens and needed to replace it. I purchased the original version for astrophotography and have been very satisfied with its performance. Despite being fully manual, I found it to be relatively easy to use. My purchase price from Adorama was less than my purchase price for my original lens.

I use it for nightscape photography. The wide open lens really makes a difference!

I primarily use this lens for landscapes and it is incredibly sharp. Manual focus isn't an issue for me because it is very easy to focus with this lens.

I wanted a fast lens for wide angle astrophotography without breaking the bank. This fits the bill perfectly.

First I should say I never think anything is perfect. A useful review is not all positive. This lens has fantastic image quality. Contrast is mediocre at F/2. There is coma in the corners up to F/2.8 but at F/3.4 it is gone. Best image quality is at F/4 to F/6.8 where is tack sharp corner to corner. I've never had this in a lens before. At F/8 to F/16 the image quality is very good but degrades of course. F/22 is not usable. The chromatic abberation is very good too, no problems there. Distortion is minimal. Focusing is easy but the lens mount allows some rotation beyond the click and it can be distracting when focusing near infinity. This makes the lens seem cheap and cost the rating a star. The lens hood is cheap too. Still, highly recommended.

I purchased this in order to do astrophotography due to its large f/2 maximum aperture and field of view on a cropped sensor camera. It's quite sharp even shot wide open with just a trace of coma in the corners. Nothing objectionable. The fact that it is a manual lens actually makes it easier to use for doing this kind of photography.

I bought this lens to enable better night and astro photography. I needed a faster wide-angle lens and I am not disappointed. But you must do a lens test before going out into the dark. The focus wheel is not calibrated very accurately, but that doesn't mean you can't find the sweet spot. This lens is sharper at F/2.0 than I expected! And for that I am very happy!
