This set comes with a few things: The TD-17KVX Gen2 Drums, the Compact Stand, 3 sets of sticks (5a, each with a different wood), and a throne. You still need a hi-hat stand and a kick pedal - so it's not an "all-in-one" solution. The Pros: The mesh heads are very nice, setup and use is surprisingly easy, the instructions are well laid out. The Mesh heads really do feel pretty much like acoustic drum heads in terms of reponsiveness The built-in kit sounds are pretty comprehensive - there's something for everyone (Live Rock sounds the best to me).. The bluetooth makes it easy to practice along to a song. It also has both MIDI and USB output for interfacing with a computer and/or other outputs. Great stuff. The Cons: All the cons are really just compromises of buying a Roland kit at this price point. Compared to the next level up, the heads are smaller, and the hi-hat, snare, and ride have a bit less complexity in the number of sounds they have. The hi-hat, in particular, is what feels the least like its acoustic drum equivalent to me. It certainly has multiple different sounds (open, closed, mid), but using the pedal like you would on an acoustic drum is less responsive, so i find i have to open the pedal a split second before i would have normally. If you are like me - a mostly novice drummer looking for an easy way to record drums at home without having a full studio set-up to mic acoustic drums - this is great. If you are a pro drummer that makes a living doing this, you'd probably be happier saving up for the next level up.

My son and I are both learning to play drums at the same time, and are pretty new to drumming. I was looking for a high-quality, durable set that would allow both of us to practice as much as possible without disrupting our next-door neighbors (or my wife), and that was also as close as I could get to an acoustic set without completely breaking the bank. After reading numerous reviews, watching tons of demo and review videos online, consulting with my son's drum instructor, and then checking out a floor model at a local music store, I decided on the Roland TD17-KVX vDrums. I've seen and read some feedback online where some people don't like the way the Roland sets sound, but after hearing this set both online and in-person, I personally like how they sound, plus you have the flexibility to fine-tune and customize how they sound to a great extent (if you want). I decide to order them from Adorama, as they were one of the few places that had them in stock, had free shipping, no sales tax (since I'm outside NY), plus I've ordered many big-ticket items from them in the past and have always been very happy with their customer service, prices, policies, shipping, packaging, and the condition and performance of the items I've ordered from them. The drum set arrived quickly, was well-packaged, and was relatively easy to set up. Overall, the set seems very well-built and sturdy, unlike some of the others that I initially also considered. So far, we love them, and I only wish they'd been available back when *I* was a kid since my parents never let me take lessons, play, or have drums of any kind back then due to the noise and volume from an acoustic kit. Although you can purchase a lot of extra gear and special cymbals, etc., to quiet down an acoustic set if you want, it all starts to add up to almost as much as this set cost, so this just seemed to be a clear way to go, and so far I'm very happy with the purchase. A few more notes about the Roland TD17-KVX drum set: Adorama lists the MDS-4KVX stand as being sold separately, but it IS included with the set (in the US only), although it comes in a separate box. Additionally, you will need to purchase a hi-hat stand and a bass drum pedal separately, along with sticks and a drum throne, and of course, some headphones if you need them. You'll also need a monitor (and cable) if you want to hear them externally (I recommend the Roland PM-100), and optionally, a drum rug/mat. Setup of the drum set itself is overall pretty quick and straightforward. The TD17-KVX has lots of great features for a beginner, like built-in metronome, coach mode, practice exercises, bluetooth for playing along to songs on your phone, etc. (you can see all these features in any one of several demo videos online, so I won't go into great detail about them here). Additionally, since these are electronic drums, you can select any one of the built-in 50 kits included or add up to 50 more custom. My son and I love the flexibility of being able to practice as often as we like, trying out the different included kits, and using the practice and coach mode features. My favorite things about the TD-17KVX are the snare drum and the VH-10 hi-hat. The snare drum is nice and big, feels more like an caustic snare drum than some of the other sets I looked at. The hi-hat also feels closer to "the real thing" as well. My only reason for not giving this a perfect 5 stars is that it does seem a bit pricier than it needs to be. I think this set would be absolutely perfect in the range of $ but even at $ I feel it's a really great buy, so I highly recommend the Roland TD-17KVX drum set, and Adorama.
