The bass clarinet they have found makes an excellent sole woodwind addition to a string section to add a firm and round color to the bottom end and composers like Steve Reich have investigated the fascinating almost synth like rhythmic passages this instrument is happy to play. The rarified contra bass clarinet, a tangle of tubes and stops that produces sub harmonics and tones to offer a rounder alternative to the contrabassoon.
