Like the instructor said. Always practice on a real drum head. This works very well and is the size of a snare with a stamped rim. Is it silent? No but it sounds like a practice pad not a drum. I think this whole practice in silence is kind of self corrupting as far as technique. If you can't hear what a tap or a tick or a thump in response to your input sounds like and feels like on a drum head, how can you manage the feel of suddenly being on a drum? Is it exactly like a drum head? Nope but it gives you the area of a standard snare and the feel of a drum head that is a bit dead. It is far better than the last rubber pad I had. And it is fa better than the dead headers for drums. Compared to the mesh, it depends on the brand and age of the mesh heads. I used mesh on a set of PinTech shells. They were silent and worked well but it was too easy to lose control of a light stick. That won't happen on this pad Just get this and move forward. I'm getting a second one.
