How the Schoeps CCM 8 L Bi-Directional Figure-8 Compact Microphone in Matte Gray, equipped with a Lemo Disconnect, revolutionizes your audio recording experience. Specifically designed for M/S and Blumlein stereo recording, this compact microphone is a true dipole (bidirectional) transducer, operating with a single diaphragm.
The main axis of the microphone, marked with a red and black dot at 0 and 180 degrees respectively, is positioned at a right angle to the capsule. This design showcases the inherent qualities of a pure pressure-gradient transducer, including a decrease in sensitivity at low frequencies and a directional characteristic that remains extraordinarily independent of frequency.
The Schoeps CCM 8 L also exhibits a proximity effect, a common trait in bidirectional microphones. The directivity index of this figure-8 pattern microphone matches that of a cardioid pattern, meaning that when placed at the same distance from a sound source, both microphones would pick up a similar balance of direct and reverberant sound.
However, the figure-8 pattern of the Schoeps CCM 8 L sets it apart as it does not respond to sound coming from the sides, above, or beneath its main axis, unlike a cardioid. The figure-8 pattern features a rear lobe equal in sensitivity to its front lobe, which compensates for the quantitative difference.
In typical reverberant settings, the sound reaching the rear lobe of the figure-8 will be delayed and dispersed more than the reverberant sound energy a cardioid picks up from its front and sides. This results in a reflected sound that is subject to more high frequency absorption, creating a unique character of reverberant sound energy.
The Schoeps CCM 8 L delivers a clear and neutral sound quality, with a frequency response that rolls off above 16 kHz. This compact microphone, with its 40Hz-16kHz frequency range and 90Ohms impedance, is a versatile tool for capturing high-quality audio in a variety of settings.
