Very disappointed

Never got the drive, still waiting for my refund. UPS lost it, it's been a real hassle to track it down. Terrible customer service.

Short cables

This thing ships with a ridiculously short cable, no where near long enough to connect my Mac Studio to the drive even if they were sitting right next to each other. The software installation on my Mac Studio (M1) was difficult because the link provided in the printed directions did not include the necessary driver software and the software that was linked to would not display anything, much less a usable message indicting the driver software was missing. Once I managed to get this thing cabled up (expensive cable from Apple after wasting money on cables from Western Digital that are comically way too short for any practical purpose) and figured out the necessary software packages to install in the correct order, if has worked fine.

Amazing drive, ridiculously fast

I don't understand the bad reviews. I have had the 24TB shuttle for years now and it has been absolutely flawless. I work with 4k and 8k video on a Mac Studio M1 Ultra daily and it performs without even a hiccup. It is blazing fast and incredibly reliable.

bad good

It could be a great product if the mother company cared about it. But very hard to get proper info, no follow up, no software updates, complicate compatibility with Apple 12.6 and above. After two years painfully using it I didnt see updates from G-Raid>SanDisk>WesterDigital.

Great Product if compatible with Apple Silicon

When will the G-Raid Software Utility be compatible with Apple Silicon. Sure you can downgrade security to get the driver to work but the G-Raid software utility doesn't work with M1 or M2 Macs so while being a great product it's as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike for anybody using M1 or M2

Constantly crashes PC, dismounts for no reason

Thought this was going to be a great solution for my production company, man was I wrong. Got the best WD drives to go in it, and the thing works maybe 1 time out of 10 for any reasonable length of time. Can't work off of it despite the high read/write speeds, and even in trying to transfer the data to a new drive, it's crashed my computer 7-8 times. 0/10, wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Please sell working products& honor discount given

today mark one month since I spend over $4000 to have an 80TB g-raid system overnighted to me to fix my data issue. I still DO NOT have a working drive in my possession. I have received a total of 3 80 TB drive one to replace the the one before it for not working for the past 4 weeks. I was also give a 30 % discount by the main technician that help me "Matt" that no-one in the company has honored. i have well over 30 hours spent on trying to work with your staff to receive a working drive with no luck after 30 day and 3 new 80TB G-raid system. Please sell working products and honor the discounts that are given. Part of my company has been on hold becasue we need this drive to so we have more storage to work.

Chassis design causes frequent cable disconnects

I was originally excited to get this new Shuttle raid, though I now realize my past connectivity experiences with G-RAID should have been a warning. Previously, I recall having had portable G-RAID drives where Firewire and USB connections would be loose and cause the drives to dismount randomly with the slightest movement of the cable or drive. And now the very same thing is happening with this G-RAID Shuttle chassis frequently disconnecting from Thunderbolt. I have tried several different makes of Thunderbolt cables and none of them will fit snugly in the connection on the raid. Instead, the connector only goes in about halfway or 3/4 of the way. This results in the Thunderbolt cable being prone to wiggle at the connection point, so if the cable is accidentally moved, and the raid will then abruptly disconnect. I have been in contact with Western Digital, we swapped the chassis for a 2nd one, but the issue is the same for the new chassis and the disconnect problem still persists. Even after adding third-party Thunderbolt connector mounts that attempt to keep any attached Thunderbolt cables from wiggling in the G-RAID connection point, the slightest movement of cables makes the raid disconnect! And my system is a permanent setup-- even though the G-RAID Shuttle drive enclosure is portable, it remains in the same position on my desk. The Thunderbolt cables are of high quality as well. This issue has gotten to the point where I am ready to get rid of the G-RAID Shuttle in hopes of finding a more reliable product and manufacturer.

Not aging well :( with new iOS's

My Shuttle XL was great for a few years until Monterey when it kept forcing reboot on my computer many times a day. Now in Ventura I cannot even access the drive. I have tried the work arounds and do not know what do do with this otherwise expensive paperweight that hold all of my backed up files. This should work as simply as it always did with full compatibility but it doesn't anymore.

Massive capacity, excellent flexibility

This is a massive array of disks and the G-RAID software allowed me to configure the storage pretty much as I desired. I';ve been using RAID arrays both professionally (I'm a retired software developer) and at home for almost 2 decades now, so I'm pretty knowledgeable about RAID in all its many variants. I split the disks into 2 4-disk arrays, one for data and the other for Time Machine backups of my four Mac computers. The data array is a single logical drive while the backup array is divided into 4 logical disks, each sized according to the storage on the individual Mac's. All logical drives are configured as RAID 6 because I've had a double drive failure in the past (not on a SanDisk array). This protects against data loss even with two drive failures occurring before the first failed drive can be replaced. So far, my only complaint is that the G-RAID Software Utility could use a local Help facility, and perhaps tooltips, to explain the various constraints on configuring the arrays and logical disks.

Ridiculously useless

I bought it ! But it is NOT compatible with Mac M1, it requires to reduce the OS security, it is not compatible AT ALL with the newest Mac OS. Super bad support because WD seems not to care about the G-Raid product line ! They bought Sandisk but seems to let go G-Raid. And there is at least 7 main WD/Sandisk/GRaid domains that treat about GRaid issues, but they dont match and are not updated. So you can never find the proper answer to your problem. Probably because there is none. You buy a great product that you cannot use properly, unless you use a previous generation Mac and dont upgrade it.

Horrible Support

These drives are not supported on M1 Mac, and Gdrive or western digital has no documentation on their website about how to install this on M1. Their support is also pretty useless as you will not get connected to agent. The SIR bot just keeps on asking questions.

Great RAID solution, fast, quiet and reliable

Mine arrived a couple of weeks ago. It took me a couple of days to understand the setup, mounting it on my Mac Studio Ultra. I bought the 24T version, preconfigured to RAID 5, giving a usable 18 TB. I'm using 12 Tb for Time Machine backups, and another 6 TB for redundant storage. I have thousands of images and hundreds of videos to scan, digitize, and store. Almost all of them are family memories, and include some photos going back the the first decade of the 20th century, so these are special. The G-RAID Shuttle is fast, quiet and reliable. I'm still learning the software that came with it, since this device is not recognized by my DriveDX software that is monitoring other hard drives. (I also use my Mac as a media server.) I felt compelled to review this when I read some of the other negative reviews here. I do have to confess concern however, if there comes a time that I have a customer service issue. A few years ago I contacted WD about a warranty issue. It was handled, but not a totally pleasant experience. My review here, however, is about the device. Although I had to make sacrifices to be able to afford it, it's definitely worth it! I'll update this review with periodic reports of how my future experience with this product goes. And a final comment: I was a little overwhelmed at first. My tech experience is average, but I was able to read the User Guide, and did a little research about RAID. I chose to take this process as a learning experience, and I have no regrets about purchasing it.

Great upgrade from Drobo with a few caveats...

I have been a Drobo user for many years now, but I have been noticing the writing on the wall regarding that particular company's future. I was, until quite recently, a Drobo 5D user-one that had roughly 32TB of data stored on the array. Given the extremely limited capabilities of the 5D's physical connection limitations, (IEEE 1394), along with the fact that OS X Big Sur 11.5+ started to have mounting issues that saw the Drobo connected, but unable to write to the drive, I knew it was time for a change. I knew I wanted USB-C as a connection as it is currently the most future-proof cable, but that narrowed down my options only slightly. There are A LOT of storage options out there now, but I was intrigued with RAID-5. I was hitherto using Drobo's proprietary configuration so I had to educate myself on my choices. RAID-5 seemed to be the most current, and displayed a nice balance between storage AND redundancy. I have used SanDisk products quite a bit, so I focused on their lineup as I have had good luck in the past, & they seem to have a large presence in the data storage industry. I know the G-Drive is relatively new, but it does seem like they have had one previous iteration to this model. I figured it'd be tough going back to 4 drives vs. 5 drives, but RAID-5 seemed to offer the same if not better protection than my Drobo did. That said, I pulled the trigger on the 24TB option. A note on RAID-5: ALL the drives must be the same size for it to work, and I only had 2x 14TB 3.5" drives, so I had to buy two more. Overall I still saved money compared to their larger storage options. I immediately noticed a difference with the USB-C to my iMac with regard to file transfers-that has been fantastic. I don't know specific transfer speeds, I just know it's faster. I upload Fujifilm Gfx100s files to my iMac and the import is twice as fast as with the Drobo, so overall a resounding success. The only gripe I have with the G-Drive is the proprietary G-RAID Software Utility you have to install to format it at the outset of connecting it to your computer. There's no real instruction as to how to use it, and I found I had to format and re-format three times to get the correct storage space recognized by the software...it kept telling me I only had 24TB connected even though I had swapped out all 6TB drives for 14TB drives. Also, I could not get the manual/advanced format options to work. Only the "Automatic" function would work for me. I suppose one other gripe I had was swapping out drives involves small screws, so you need workmans tools designed specifically for computers to make any swap out. The Drobo made this process a whole lot easier. I am very happy overall with the product & look forward to my future with USB-C storage speeds!
