Shopper : what is the mounting plate on the HDR170?DAVID W. K : There is a hard plastic plate that is the base of the ear pad. This is what fits into the ear phones, by twisting and pulling lightly. The mounting plate has projecting tabs which fit into holes of the ear phones, and lock by twisting.William H : Plastic plate attached to the pad, which some pads do not have.MARK B : The mounting plate is the hard rigid 'plate' the is attached to the ear pad. It has protrusions or hooks that align to associated holes in the headphone and mount the ear pad via the plate to the headset. The plate is necessary to mount the new pad to the headset.
There are a lot of sellers that provide a pad, but they don't call out if a mounting plate is included or not. If your pad has worn out or is torn, it is possible to reuse the plate with a new pad. You can remove the plate from the pad, and then attach the combo to the headset. I personally have never done this. I find it much easier to purchase a new pad that has the plate already attached. So be careful and certify that the plate is included if needed. I hope this helps.
Lee L : Will these ear pads work with Sennheiser RS 175 or HDR 175?DAVID W. K : No, they will only work on the products specified. In addition to these (for my HDR170), I purchased replacement ear pads directly from Sennheiser for my HDR 175. The pads and plates for the 170 and 175 are different, and not compatible.ANDREW R : Sennheiser lists compatibility with the following:

Quality problems require customer to buy these
A poor design for cushions means that all customers will need to replace these. The membrane coating the foams pads began cracking and peeling on 2 pairs of headphones at the same time. Planned obsolescence?
