David H : How long does one of these typically last? In the past 8-9 years, I've had to replace it at least twice because it stopped heating up.Frank L : My first D&K tacking iron lasted many years and then wouldn't heat any more. The one I have now had a rivet fail within a very short time so the handle wobbled. It was too much trouble to send it back so I got friend to weld the handle on. This was tricky because it had to be disassembled first to protect the old school electronics. It works great and is so strong now I expect it to last forever. The bottom line is that these are very tough save an occasional problem. If I needed another one I would be a bit put out but I would do it in a second. There are few good alternatives, it's much better than an iron. By the way, I assume you have a dry mount press. If not, use an iron and put a sheet of paper between the iron and the mounting material. If you have a dry mount press, don't touch the glue with any part of the iron except the tip. Good luck.COLLEGE S : I've had to replace every three years, but we use every day. I have resorted to using a small travel iron. Much cheap and does not stain the paper black.TIM M : I had a similar hot tacking iron for 41 years and only replaced it because I misplaced it on a cross country move. The tip is all teflon not just a thin coating.CYNTHIA S : I don't think so. I had the Teflon come off on another tacking iron (different maker). I like to use a sheet of silicone between the iron and my photo/documents to avoid too much friction (and the Teflon rubbing off on your work). So far this one has been really good!MARK P : it does not wear off even if its been plug in for several days!

Works, for great price

Used for tacking adhesive paper to photos, then to foamboard before going into drymount press. Don't see the point in paying more for the other version with a variable temperature knob - just rub it a little longer if you want it to tack more, and keep it moving if you don't want your subject to get too hot. Great price compared to other stores for exactly the same product I like the wooden handle - nice touch. Comes with a simple metal holder to place it on when it's hot. Works ok but doesn't seem really sturdy so I may make a replacement.
