Review Summary
The Passive-Active Pack is a collection of three very different equalizers, each with its own character and quirks. The Passive and Active equalizers emulate real workhorse units, used on thousands of recordings from past to present. The Focusing Equalizer combines these with analog sounding saturation and a novel workflow.
Passive Equalizer
Only available as part of Passive-Active Pack, Mix Bundle or Studio Collection. The Passive Equalizer is modeled from a famous German three-band passive equalizer. It features a wide bandwidth with an unprecedented clear and open sound. The low boost gives you a warm low end, perfect to fatten up a bass drum or bass guitar track. Cutting the highs gives you a very gentle 6 dB cut which allows you to remove highs in a very musical way. The high boost is open and crisp and breathes life into any track.
Three bands with an extremely wide and open sound
Excellent treble control without any "digital harshness"
Warm low end and a sparkling top
Authentic component modeling
Fully automatable parameters
The Passive Equalizer has three filters. The Low filter is a shelving filter (boost or cut) with a fixed 60 Hz corner frequency. The Presence filter has seven fixed frequencies and is boost only. The High filter is a boost or cut shelf at 10 kHz. The equalizer is gentle and sweet and will work anywhere a simple workflow and nice sound are more important than super precision.
Active Equalizer
Only available as part of Passive-Active Pack, Mix Bundle or Studio Collection. The Active Equalizer is modeled from an active equalizer design made somewhere in the Swiss alps back in the 70's. It has a tight and focused sound and the equalizer a highly useful problem solver when you need to get into mixing details.
Three parametric bands
Low and High cut filters
Select between a narrow or wide Q setting for each band
Authentic component modeling.
The Active Equalizer is a nice sounding general purpose equalizer with tight and focused sounding filters. It has three bands, each with selectable cut/boost gain, frequency and width, as well as an 18 dB/octave high and low cut with selectable frequencies. The three EQ bands have overlapping but non-interfering frequencies. The Active Equalizer is modeled from a classic and extremely well sounding Swiss equalizer design.
Focusing Equalizer
Only available as part of Passive-Active Pack, Mix Bundle or Studio Collection. A Softube innovation. The Focusing Equalizer is a novel and untraditional take on the EQ concept where the low, mid and high bands move automatically and musically in relation to the high and low cut filters. It features the filters from the Passive and Active Equalizers, as well as an outstanding one-knob saturation control.
Untraditional and highly inspiring
Three-band EQ that automatically and musically changes with Low and High Cut
Choose between Passive or Active EQ character
Built-in one knob saturation with metering
Selectable saturation type
Authentic component modeling.
This equalizer may give you more than you asked for. The main idea is to have an equalizer where you first determine the bandwidth with the Low and High Cut faders. After that, you use the High, Mid and Low knobs to further enhance the sound of the track, focusing on the sound you're interested in. There's no need for separate frequency selectors for the different bands since these have already been set in a very natural sounding way by the High and Low Cut.
By the flick of a switch you can determine whether you want the sound of the Low and High cuts, as well as the Low, Mid and High filters to come from their Passive or Active Equalizer models. In addition to this they have added a saturation circuit, very much based on the distortion and compression from their famous FET Compressor.
