Great lens!

I shoot as a semi-pro with a Canon 7D. The studio I work for does all manner of photography, from weddings/special events to real estate, fashion, school portraits, etc. I bought this lens to use for weddings, real estate, and for my own artistic work, like landscapes and urbex/architecture. I looked at the Canon as well, and for me, this was a better value. It is very sharp, and the auto-focus is quick and quiet. At 10mm, it does produce barrel distortion, but that can be fixed in post, or it can be left alone for that effect, which looks nice for certain things anyway...at 20mm, it has very little noticeable distortion. Two things to be aware of with this one are lens flare, which is easy with such a wide lens ( just compose accordingly!)and the slower f/4-f/5.6...If you need or want better low light ability, you'll have to spend a bunch more. I just did a wedding with this, ( and several other lenses, of course!) and with my external flash it performed beautifully, so for me, that speed isn't worth the extra $$$. I have also done night shoots on my tripod and gotten similarly great shots with it. I could have rated it a four for those reasons, but for WHAT IT IS, it really is an awesome lens. If you need wide and shoot on a cropped sensor, try this one!

Best wide angle lens!

The perfect landscape lens and special effects. The weight is well balanced with the Cannon Eos 60D. It feels like the lens and camera body is one really one unit, not top heavy.

Superb value ultra-wide

As the majority of my shooting occurs either outdoors in full daylight or from a sturdy tripod, this lens represents an outstanding value in the ultra-wide category. Autofocus speed on this revision is far more speedy and accurate than the one I had a few years ago, even in lower-light situations. This newer one does not suffer the annoying back-and-forth seek chatter that plagued the earlier one, and the motor itself is more quiet than the previous. As it is, most of my use of this lens is by manual focusing, which is plenty smooth and easy. The smoother finish is easier to keep clean, and does not seem to hold onto dust and dry skin ruboff like the previous version. As someone who does not use this lens for sports action or wildlife or motorsports shots, and the like, this lens has performed admirably in all situations I've put it to. Coupled to an EOS 50D, I have always had sharp images with good & balanced color rendition. Chromatic aberration has yet to rear its ugly head in any of my shots, while a CPL filter will do wonders for outdoors and reflective subjects. With financial circumstances forcing the sale of my previous copy of this lens some time ago, I am actually glad now to have acquired this newer one. It's simply more refined in tangible ways, and is an even better value now with current prices being what they are. If you simply MUST HAVE the "near-L" reputation of Canon's 10-22, then buy that. It's unquestionably an excellent lens. However, if you're like me and desire a great 'bang-for-buck' alternative, this one will not disappoint. Consider also that this lens is overall smaller and weighs noticeably less than Canon's 10-22, which can be considered as a feature.

AS GOOD AS ADVERTISED

I bought this to work with my 60D and I could not be happier. When I am on vacation, this allows me to take nice photo's of the large Cathedrals in Europe.

Wonderful wide angle!

I got this lens mainly to take pictures of landscapes and skys full of clouds, I got exactly what I was looking for: distortion (without very much if any loss of focus at the sides) around the edges for a more dramatic appearance and an extremely wide angle. I can capture nearly half the sky in one image!

OMG . . .

This lens was exactly what I was expecting. It takes GREAT pictures. Very tight and well contrsucted. This is my first Sigma Lens, but I am ready to send all my Canon Kit lens and Canon Telephoto to the lens boneyard. I will definitely be replacing them with Sigma Lens.

As many of you here have been doing,

I thought about this lens for a long time. Really wanted to get in to wider angle. Thought about the usual things, 3rd party lens, focus issues, yada yada. Well, I decided to go for it. The lens is impressive. The dynamic range of this glass is not to be taken lightly. I think these 2 images will explain.

Nice wide angle lens

great for Christmas photos. very handy wide angle lens. At times the shade gets in the way of the flash on the camera on very close up picture. Very useful for documenting and architectural pictures of houses and rooms.

Ultra Wide Angle Lens

Purchased for wide angle astrophotos. Very sharp, with good color correction. Just a little vignetting when wide open.

Great value for super real estate lens

I shoot real estate, which is where I use this lens daily. Over the weekend spent time in historic Leadville, Colorado cemetary. Got super shots with morning light.

Very Wide

This is a fun lens to use if you use it right. It is very wide. Foe me it's best used when you are shooting fairly close and still want to include the landscape or interior. I took a couple shots of a friend who was driving while I was in the passenger seat and was able to fit all of him head to toe, the truck interior and part of myself in the shot.

Fantastic Glass

I wanted an extremely sharp wide zoom but I didn't want to pay a fortune for it. I bought this lens with far lower expectations than what I received. This lens is much sharper than I expected. The build is also much nicer than I thought it would be. The only thing I could ask more of would be a closer focusing capability and a constant aperture - maybe a bit faster. Sadly, the Canon 10-20 costs twice as much, doesn't focus as close as the Sigma, and only has a half stop advantage. Overall, the Sigma is a much better value.

Didn't take my breath away

The image quality was average. The color seemed dull to me. I returned the lens and bought the Sigma 8-16mm instead and am much happier.

Battle of the Super Wides

I needed a wide lens to take advantage of the C-size sensor on my Canon 7D which gives a 16mm crop with this lens set at 10mm. After reading many reviews on lens in this class and focal lenght, I chose the Sigma. I like to have a super wide in the bag when needed for landscape and interior shots, and so far this lens has worked well. Nice finish and build quaility, plus a 77mm filter mount. I am trying to purchase all my lens with this size filter,so you only have to buy 1 filter for all. This is the second Sigma I now own, and I am pleased with Sigma's quaility and build. Nice glass.

Happy with purchase

This lens will fit on my canon 40D, and unlike Canon's offering in this range, it works on my Eos 1N 35mm, it vignettes on the 35mm past about 14mm, but that's really wide for a 35mm. The image quality is great. I'd buy this again

Great Lense

I love this lens. It's not so great for portraiture but it's amazing for landscapes architecture and city photography where you just need to get a little bit more wide but don't want all the distortion of a fisheye.

Really great lens

I've owned this lens for several years. I always have this lens handy when I travel from my home. It is that good. This is my really go to lens when I want to get really wide. I mean really wide the first time I used it I realized I was seeing the leg of my tripod in the bottom of the frame! I have it on a 40D with a battery grip and that works well for me. I've read the reviews about the f-stop not being wide enough. I tend to shoot around 5.6 or 11 so that isn't an issue with me. Landscape photography at night it's on a tripod anyhow. Barrel distortion? Yes, sometimes but then again when you go this wide you've got to expect it. Just learn to work around it. Bottom line is I really like this lens so much that when I went to a full frame I still bring this lens with me on my 40D. Going to have to look into a 17-40 lens for that. I'll lose a degree on the low end but I think I can live with that.

Sharp!

Very sharp lens. Nicely affordable when you need to go wide on an APS-C sensor camera. Some barrel distortion when you go out to 10mm, but easily corrected in PS.

Very good product

Great lens overall. Sharp glass and quick, quiet focus.I've owned this lens for nearly 2 years and have no complaints with its performance. My only disappointment is in the limitation on the aperture, but that's something I was aware of before purchasing it. It's a GREAT wide angle lens if you're looking for wide perspectives but aren't planning on using the images in professional applications. If you plan on using images for any professional application, I would recommend the Sigma 10-20mm f4 lens, or the Canon 10-22, just because it gives you better versatility with your aperture.Apart from that, the glass and the construction on this lens are excellent and I have shot many a great photo with it.

This is a real fun lens to have. It is great for landscape, night shots and indoor stuff. I would definitly consider this Sigme before spending the extra on a name brand. Infact this is my only off brand lens I own. I highly recommend it!

Excellent super-wide lens

Excellent super wide angle lens for landscape/cityscape work with an ASP-C dSLR. f5.6 when wide open means it isn't really good for super creative work (spend the extra$$'s to get the f3.5!) but for the price you really can't beat it. Feels nice and solid, and the matt finish looks really good. Excellent glass quality with very good detail, obviously a fair bit of distortion, but then it's super-wide so what do you expect?! Only slight issue isn't really to do with the lens, but as it requires very slim filters (to stop vignetting) it means the lens cap won't attach to the filter, so you'll have to buy a rubber push-on one... which makes storing the lens hood reversed on the lens a bit more difficult...

Incredible Lens

By sac

I figured I should snag a super-wide to complement my Sigma 17-70 and Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS before our latest vacation (over to Europe). I thought I could find a use for it there, and it ended up on my Rebel XT most of the time. This lens rocks in most any situation you want where you need a wide view. Awesome in the Alps and in London and Paris. f/4-5.6 isn't fast, but with the short focal range, you can handhold this in darker areas and still get sharp shots. Images are sharp with stunnin...

Best value for money

By SHYUE O.

I have used this lens for about 1month now. It is my favorite landscape lens. I was looking for a wide angle lens for my APS-C camera. Between the few choices available, the Canon 10-22mm, and Tamron, I chose the Sigma as it was the cheapest. I tested the other two lenses too, and did not find differences sufficient to justify the price premium. Also, Sigma makes a f/3.5 version of this lens. I have not used that before, but f/4 is sufficient for almost all the situations I am shooting ...

The Sigma 10-20mm F4-5.6 Ex DC HSM lens allows enjoyment of super wide-angle photography and it is a very powerful tool for indoor shooting and landscape photography

Wide angle of view (102.4° at 10mm and 63.8° at 20mm) offers the photographer greater freedom of expression.

These are special DC Series Lenses designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital SLR cameras. Their specialized design gives these lenses the ideal properties for digital cameras, the compact and lightweight construction is an added bonus!

Three SLD glass elements are employed for effective compensation of color aberration, which is a common problem with super-wide angle lenses. One piece of glass mold and two hybrid aspherical lenses, offer excellent correction for distortion, as well as all types of aberration.

This lens is equipped with an inner focusing system, and the models which are equipped with HSM system provide quiet, high speed autofocus shooting and also offer full time manual focusing. It has a minimum focusing distance of 24cm (9.4") at all focal lengths. The non-rotating lens barrel perfectly suits the petal shaped lens hood. A circular polarizing filter can also be used conveniently.

Please note:
Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.
