Questions & Answers

ANNU P : Hello everyone! I am learning the ropes of photography. I have a full frame Nikon D750. Looking for a reasonably priced macro... would this lens be a good choice. What other uses can I get from this lens. Thank you in advance?
Douglas W P : Just to be sure, will this work with the Canon 80D?DARRELL B M : I don't have an 80D but it does work on all EOS full frame and crop frame cameras I own. You can use an EOS lens on both full frame and cropped frame (80D) cameras but you can't use and EOS-S (specifically for cropped frame cameras) on a full frame body.RAFAEL P : Yes, I have an EOS 70d -the generation before the 80d, and it works well.KENT C : Yes, it will. I have it on my 80D and it focuses and functions very well.FRANK B : Yes I have used it my old T2i, my 6D, so anything requiring an EF or EF-S lens will be fine I will add, this is a beautiful lens which has blown me away on many shots especially close up detail images
Shopper : Even though this lens is a macro can it double for low light sport photography specifically gymnastics?NICOLE D : Personally, I think this lens would be a bit too slow for sports photography. It searches at longer distances. Something like the Canon 135mm might suit you better if you are looking for a sports lens. If you need the image stabilization, the 70-200 f/2.8 is a great choice. This is a terrific macro lens, though, and beautiful portrait lens as well!GREGORY N : It would depend on how you define low light. I used it in a recent awards presentation in a large ballroom with lighting that was constantly changing from subdued to glaring. Had pretty good results but had to use higher ISO settings. Gymnastics would be more forgiving I would think. Overall, it's a favorite lens of mine for nature photos, macro off course, and portraits. The ability to limit focusing range is helpful in a number of settings, like the awards program I mentioned. Hope this helps you.ANN A : I have only used it for macro and portrait work. It is a very fast lens and works well in low light. Can't really answer your question about sports, however.BRUCE B : I'm no expert, but along with using it as a 1 to 1 macro,I have used it as a portrait lens and it takes great shots. It is a super lens if you need a 105 MM on a full frame camera or approximately 170 mm on a cropped sensor. it has a switch on it that allows it to adjust for focusing on objects that are farther away.MICHELLE S : I love this lens for portraits but I fear the focus will not be fast enough to keep up with gymnastics.JAMES D : I have never tried it on indoor sports but suspect it would work well as long as you used the Center point focus. Of course you would have to be close enough to get a good framing on your photo. This lens is Tack sharp.DR STANLEY S : Sorry, but I have no experience using it in low light situations.JOHN G : The lens works very well with my Canon DSLR T3i and then this year I bought a 7d. I first bought the lens for Macro Photography, which it does very well. I had never had a fast lens (2.8) before. I was so excited that I used it for action pictures of family, both general shots and at soccer matches. It does do very well, but of course night time lighting makes it more difficult to get the higher shutter speeds. Since then I bought a Canon 70-200mm 2.8 for the family events and sporting events, but it is in a much higher price range. Being able to zoom in or out has been nice addition in framing my subject. For me, though, the Macro Lens is a nice addition to my tools because the lens, by definition, does not pull in the corners as much as a telephoto lens. I would not have really known that fact if it wasn't for my photography friend that has been mentoring me.MARK T : Of course !! I use it for non-macro photographs probably 60% of the time. There is no technical reason why a macro lens cannot be used for distant photography provided that the focus ring shows the infinity symbol (sideways figure 8) and this one does. (Side note: never have I seen a lens without infinity, but, I suppose, it is in the realm of possiblity.) It is a rather fast lens (2.8) so at a fast shutter speed and wide-open, your depth of field will suffer, but gymnastics not being a team sport, I beleive this will be an advantage.WANDA S : I have zero experience with sport photography and use my Sigma 105 strictly for macro, but would think that this lens would not be good for what you're asking. I don't know how far away from your subject you will be, but this lens does not give you much field of view. If this gives you an idea of its capabilities, I looked through this lens at my kitchen island from about 30 feet away and estimated that the height covered in the frame was about 50" (at horizontal orientation). I think it would be difficult to get a whole person inside that frame, especially a moving person. My zoom lens--a Canon EF-S 15-85 has macro capability and is what I use for my all-around lens. That's just my opinion but I hope it helps.JAY Y : This lens has solid low light IQ performance but the autofocus is extremely slow and will hunt hard in low light, poor choice for any form of fast action photography.NORMAN A : The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro lens can be used as a normal 105mm fast telephoto lens. Assuming that 105mm is long enough and f/2.8 is fast enough for your application (which I would expect it to be), then it should work fine. It's a very sharp 105mm telephoto with image stabilization. The image stabilizer makes a funny buzzing noise when it first comes on. I called Sigma customer support about it when I first got the lens and was told that is normal. The image stabilization works pretty well.Sergey K : Might not work for sports photography, because its a bit slower to focus compared to non-macro glass, good for low light though, and really sharp

Great lens!

This lens has been wonderful so far! Before purchasing, I did a fair amount of research about which macro lens to get, and this seemed to be the all-around winner in terms of affordability and quality. I use it while hiking, and it does a great job of getting those beautiful close-up shots of flowers, plants, insects, etc. The focus is always incredibly sharp. I haven't been disappointed. A downside is that it is quite heavy, especially for hiking, but that's to be expected. It was well-packaged in its own case, and included 2 lens hoods.

My treasure

Is my first macro lens and I have not regret. Is biginer friendly, sharp, fast focus, and I have been capturing so.many detailed images than I couldn't even think I could do it so fast to easy.

Sigma 105mm Macro. Outstanding Lense in every way.

Sigma build and feel. Solid, works to perfection, great quality lenses. I own three Sigma lenses and the next one I buy will be Sigma. Their workmanship and customer service is next to without a doubt the best of any I have encountered.

From Mushrooms to Headshots

I used this lens for everything from photographing mushrooms and insects to fashion models and headshots. Excellent image quality, though a little heavy. It's fast at 2.8, though if you are using it for headshots or macro, you don't need that kind of speed. Could be an F4 or 5.6 and would still be amazing. I dropped this lens out of a bag one time and Adorama had it fixed with my VIP 360 account and it worked every bit as good as it did the day I got it.

Fantastic lens! Been wanting it for a long time....

I've been looking at this lens for quite a while. Then when Adorama had it on sale, I couldn't pass it up! What a well made, sturdy, macro lens from Sigma. This is one of several Sigma lenses I own. I have a Nikon D750.

Good lens and saves a few $$$

Does a great job and images look great. Does it hunt a little bit? A little here and there. But that?s expected when going 1:1 brings you in on some very weird things. However, in almost all circumstances, I am in manual focus mode anyway.

Learning Experience for Newbie

It is a really nice lens and takes very clear pictures. I am a newbie and just started using manual settings rather than automatic. I have been able to blur background on portraits and pet photos. I have yet to take a really great macro shot. it is going to be a learning experience.

This is one of the best lenses I have ever owned. Not only does it take great macro shots, but it also takes great everyday pictures no matter what subject you are shooting.

I love this lens on my D780, D7100, and D50 infrared cameras. Not a fast lens, but the sharpness more than makes up for it.

Great lens.

The lens is fantastic. Works great for my macro shots as well as potrait photography. The shake reduction works well. Heavier lens; but well worth it for the photos I am able to get with it.

Quality Lens at a Great Price

Can't say enough great things about the Sigma 105mm Macro Lens. Sturdy construction. Intuitive to use despite all the buttons. Comes with a carrying bag. I got it in a bundle, so it came with lots of extra things like the lens cap strap, a set of filters, etc. Some reviewers have commented the autofocus motor can be loud. And that's sort of true. But you hear it for maybe half a second. It's certainly not at the level that I'm upset in any way, especially considering I paid under $600 for the whole kit.

Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens for Canon EF performs well in my experience mounted with RF EF adapter w/ or w/o the 1.4 TC.

Very pleased with this lens on the R6, here's an example of one that was focus stacked in DPP and edited in Luminar 4.

Amazing lens

I purchased this lens primarily to use with my Canon 80D in doing macro photography, since extension tubes weren't doing it for me anymore. I've only taken a few macro shots so far, but the quality is fantastic - very sharp, decent working distance, perfect for the way I want to use the lens. But what surprised me is how well this lens performs in non-macro situations - pet portraits mostly, but also just some general walk-around type things. At 100mm, it's not an everyday walk-around lens, but when you have it in your bag it comes in handy. But with pets - four cats - that 100mm gives a working distance that is so much better than any of my other lenses, without sacrificing sharpness or forcing a higher ISO than I want. So far I am really happy with it.

Amazing image quality. I was blown away by the detail in stacked images using this lens. On hand held images, butterfly's and other creatures which do not want to "pose,"

Great lens!!

By ELOZOR G.

Great lens. Macro lenses are essential for product photog. Especially jewelry work. This lens gives me great detail at a good working distance. I also needed it for occasional head shots and other portraiture which it does fantastic as well! You do NOT need to spend the extra $$ on the nikon! This does the job exactly the same! I did a side by side comparison...

Absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE This lens

By KURT R.

I am an amature photographer and recently became interested in trying my hand at Macro photography. I was a little wary because I have been told that this is one of the more difficult types of photography to do. This lens makes it much easier than I expected. It is easy to manually focus and produces tack sharp images. The lens is a bit heavy and it had a hefty price tag (even on sale) but I am convinced that the quality of the lens has made all the difference and it encourages me that, y...

While the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens for Canon EOS DSLR Cameras is a high-quality, durable, and versatile lens, it's the advanced features that truly set it apart for close-up photography. The Optical Stabilizer (OS) system, a unique feature in the realm of macro lenses, allows for handheld photography, capturing sharp, blur-free images even in challenging lighting conditions.

Constructed with a Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and one high refractive index SLD lens, this lens offers superior correction for all types of aberration and distortion. Its innovative floating focusing system moves two distinct lens groups in the optical path to different positions, compensating for astigmatic aberration and spherical aberration. This results in exceptionally high optical performance, from infinity to 1:1 Macro, making it a reliable choice for photographers seeking precision and versatility.

The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens also features a Super Multi-Layer Coating, which significantly reduces flare and ghosting. This ensures high contrast images, capturing the finest details with clarity. For photographers looking to extend their reach, this lens is compatible with Sigma's APO TELE CONVERTERS.

The Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures quiet and high-speed autofocus, as well as full-time manual focus capability, offering flexibility for both spontaneous and carefully composed shots. Designed with a splash-proof exterior, this lens is built to withstand harsh conditions, making it a durable choice for outdoor and adventure photography.

Finally, the lens boasts a rounded 9-blade diaphragm, creating an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image. This feature enhances the aesthetic quality of your photos, making them stand out with a professional touch.

In summary, the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro Lens for Canon EOS DSLR Cameras is a high-performing, versatile lens that delivers exceptional results in close-up photography and beyond. Its compatibility with a wide range of Canon cameras and the included bundle of accessories add to its value, making it a comprehensive solution for your photography needs.
