ZOOM-PRIME COMPARISON UNFAIR

At the time of this writing, there is only one review on this product (by Yuki Hyo). The reviewer unfairly compares this ZOOM lens to a PRIME lens. The review seems credible on its face, but in reality should be dismissed outright due to the premise on which it is based. It should be apparent to most that any such comparison is inappropriate and unfair, as 99.9% of the time, a prime lens will beat a zoom, particularly where clarity is concerned. I just wanted to mention this because many readers stated that they found that earlier review helpful . . .

Too many, "If only's...." for my liking

Incomparable in terms of its choice of focal lengths, (especially at such a fast aperture) but doesn't hold a candle to either of Canon's 300mm L IS prime lenses (f/2.8 or f/4) in terms of AF speed, sharpness or saturation. (I used it on a 1D Mk111 & 30D before parting with it) It was an interim purchase between owning an old 300mm f/2.8L USM Mk111 and the current IS version, but in all honesty, it's not as good as either (in any area apart from its marvelous zoom range). It's heavier, clumsier, scratches far too easily, doen't accept rear filters, has no stabilization, (what do you want for the price?) and there's something about that tripod mount-come-carrying grip that can only be experienced by handling it. In two words... it's odd! AND it can easily be cross-threaded if you're not really careful, so some kind of permanently mounted, after-market adapter plate is essential to my mind. Shame really, because the lens shows a lot of potential. Perhaps a Mk11 version will close the gaps, but Sigma really has to do something about improving their lens durability. They all seem to mark far too easily. For sports, brilliant..... for wildlife or birds, stay with your dedicated camera brand.

Sigma 135101 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG APO IF HSM Zoom Lens Specifications

About Sigma 135101 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG APO IF HSM Zoom Lens

120-300mm F2.8 APO EX DG HSM lens.

This lens transforms the classic large-aperture F2.8 300mm lens into a zoom lens that allows you to determine the picture composition without having to change your vantage point.

Two SLD (the special low dispersion) glass elements in front group and another SLD element is used in the rear group for excellent correction of chromatic aberration. The new lens coating reduces flare and ghost, a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum natural color balance.

Since focusing and zooming do not change its overall length, this lens offers ease of handling. HSM ensures a quiet, high-speed, AF as well as full-time manual focus (for Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts).

Tripod Socket (TS-41) is supplied as a standard accessory. Circular polarizing filters can easily be used as the front of the lens does not rotate. When this lens is used with the 1.4x EX or 2x EX Apo Tele Converters (optional), it becomes a 168-420mmF4 AF telephoto lens or a 240-600mm F5.6 AF ultra-telephoto lens respectively.
