Like the results

I usually do macro shooting of flowers and so far from what I have shot, like the results!

Strong lens

This lens is one of the best I own. Excellent sharpness even wide open, best sharpness by F4, great distance for macro, fairly light and well constructed. A foot plate is a welcome attachment. The focus limiter helps. This lens is not an AF beast but certainly not a slouch, I have not missed any shots in regular everyday shooting, don't know about fast paced sports. Strongly recommended.

Very sharp

I have been very impressed with this lens. It gives a good working distance from insects but best of all it is very sharp. It is a bit heavy but well built. My only complaint is that it doesn't focus quite as fast as by better Nikon lenses but is not bad.

Sigma 150 mm F/2.8

I've been shooting with the Sigma 105 mm for several years, and I was very apprehensive about the learning curve that I thought would accompany the 150 mm. I was wrong. From the very first time I put it on I started getting just the effect that I had been looking for. Since the minimum distance (15") is so much further from the targeted subject the lens becomes very forgiving and the depth of field at these distances, or even further out, is actually greater than shooting with say the 105 mm. With the aperture wide open most of the subject, if not all, is in focus while the surrounding areas are blurred beautifully. If you're looking for a good long length macro this could be the lens for you. The auto focus can drift from time to time, but that's not an issue if you shoot in manual focus.

Great Macro Lens but Definitely not a Walk Around...

I only recently purchased this lens and haven't taken all that many photos with it yet, but for true macro work think it's awesome. It does however need some learning and getting used to. First of all, it's heavy and not a lens you'd want to lug around all day. While you can do some general work with it, this is a lens made for true macro photography. You have to use a tripod for really close work because the depth of field is quite shallow, even at high f-stops, and every shake is noticeable as well. Secondly, the auto-focus works quite well for general distances, but at true macro ranges I occasionally got some hunting or inaccuracy. This is not a problem for me, as I generally manual focus at these distances anyway. Sharpness and contrast is excellent throughout the frame; however, some vignetting was noticed below about f/5.6 (Canon 70D). The bokeh is quite nice at wider apertures, but I saw some edge effect when stopping down past about f/10 or so I plan to use this mostly for insects and for this it really will give me a boost over my old Tamron 90 - which is good lens in it's own right and actually better suited for portrait and walk around use. I plan to keep both.

It takes some getting use to!

I love shooting pictures of insects, birds and flowers. Getting use to being further from my subject has taken some time for me with this Macro. It definitely has it's advantages like not spooking little creatures. The crispness of the pictures/subject taken with this lens are utterly amazing. I use it with my Nikon D80. It is heavy, but the lens is well built, no lens creep like I feel with some of my Nikon lens.

Wonderful lens!

I used this lens for a macro photography class. Wow, I can't say enough great things about it. It performs amazingly with the sharpest, clearest close-up pictures I've ever seen. It has a little bit of trouble finding it's focus at times. But the pictures I got from that class were outstanding. It has a very solid construction, if a bit on the heavy side. But then again, I'm used to using my little 40mm f/2.8 macro lens, which doesn't compare in performance.

Ehh... Some Issues, Warranty Work

I recently had this lens serviced by Sigma due to autofocus issues (back-focus) I been seeing on this lens and another, Nikon 80-200, on my D7000. The camera shop used Fine Tune to dial adjust the back-focus and said the Sigma wouldn't respond to it, in either direction ( - or + ). They recommended it send it Sigma and agreed, camera shop sent it off for me. The warranty work was done fairly quickly, even during Christmas holidays, 15th it got shipped and got it back on 27th. Sigma had to replace the circuit board and the image stabilization. Good thing this has a 4-year warranty, too bad for no free shipping to Sigma, $ for me. Other than that it seems to be a pretty good lens, sharp pictures. Definitely check out your lens to make sure the QA didn't drop the ball, I hear they gotten better but I'm going to remain doubtful. I'd recommend it for the 150mm range but then if it isn't needed and perhaps a 105mm would suffice, then I wouldn't recommend it.

Sharp Telephoto/Macro

This lens is amazingly sharp and offers a level of focus that few zooms can match, even at f2.8. It is an excellent macro that allows for detailed exploration of the small side of things. But because it's a 150mm, you don't need to get as close to use it's macro capabilities. I've also found it to be a great lens for interior shots and low light. Very few telephoto zooms get to 2.8 and even fewer are this sharp. That means I've done some intimate portraits with this lens while keeping far enough away that the subject hardly notices the intrusion. And having image stabilization means I can get great results hand-held. The only drawback is that the lens sometimes takes a little longer to focus, especially in low light. This isn't unusual, most macros are a bit slower to focus. So buy the lens knowing that it won't be as quick to nail focus as a non-macro, especially a non-macro Canon L. This lens does the things it was built to do and does them excellently well -- with sharp focus, great contrast and lovely bokeh. That's all you can ask from any lens.

GREAT LENS

GREAT LENS! Focus is dead on. Lens is sharp. Made of metal. I used it for about 3 weeks and love it every time I use it. Bokeh is smooth at f2.8, but not too pleasant at f5.6 and smaller. Focus is decently fast for sports when you put the limiter on. The only thing that I don't like is the Sigma finish. It can get scratched easily.

Great Macro Lens

I've mostly used this for macro, which is why I bought it, and there the focus is slow & I often go manual focus because of it. Not sure of focus behavior in normal use, but suspect focus will not be quick enough for a lot of action photography.

great macro lens

Excellent for macro. Allows 1:1 life size shots. i use it for wildflowers and love it. Might not be good for sports due to the wide focus range. It might take awhile to focus on action. However, it does have some focus limits that might be helpful.

I would buy this Sigma 150mm new lens

I have had the lens 4 days, taken over 200 pictures. I've been impressed with the speed of the lens focus. The built-in stabalizer does a good job so you can use higher apatures. I have been doing close-up work on dragonflies, butterflies, etc. Did not buy this lens for sports or action shooting but should work fine because it is fast focus and sharp. For a 150 lens the weight is just right, not too heavy. I have a Nikon D90 and many other Nikon lenses and this lens preforms just as well.

Sigma Macro 150mm F2.8 EX DG HSM (106-101) boasts Optical Stabilization (OS) which is critical to equipment sporting this focal range and is now splash-proof. Offering the latest optical design technology this lens remains a large aperture medium macro lens ideal for shooting the smaller things in world that exists virtually unseen.

A macro lens is one which will focus on a subject close enough to render it "life-size" on the image plane in your camera. It also has a "flat" field" front lens element so that it can shoot images of flat objects such as artwork or postage stamps and be tack sharp all the way across the image. With HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) a quiet & high-speed auto focus is ensured. It provides extremely high optical performance from infinity to 1:1 Macro.

Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide optimum color correction and sharpness throughout the entire range and Super Multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting. It has superior peripheral brightness and provides sharp and high contrast images even at maximum apertures.

The OS offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. It is also compatible with Sigma APO Tele Converters. Ideally suited for taking pictures of insects or other small creatures, but it is also the perfect focal length for facial portraits rendering the best perspective of the human face. This greater distance also allows the photographer more flexibility in lighting the subject with natural light reflectors.
