Questions & Answers

JEROME I : im interested in buying this sigma vs the canon efs 35mm f2 . i would like to clarify: the sigma doesnt have an image stabilization? this wouldnt it affect still photos as well as (more on) videos? appreciate the time and the reply.BRETT Z : This lens does not have stabilization, however it's optics are far superior to the any of the canon(or nikon or zeiss) 35mm lens even out to the corners. It is a full stop faster than the Canon 35/2 which helps focus in low light. For a wide angle lens stabilization is an ingenious solution to a non existent problem. If you are using stacked ND filters or a big stopper ND for truly slow shutter speed use a tripod or other solid rest. I have used this lens on a crop frame body in dark clubs hand held to capture local music acts with lots of keepers.DYLAN C : Yes, this has IS, and it takes absolute gorgeous photos and videos. If you are okay with going up to F2, you should consider the 18-35mm F1.8 A from sigma released this year. For a .4 , you get range up to 18mm. I have shot videos with this, but didn't like the results all the time (that may be due to my in experience.) Its a very tight crop for videos at 35mmMICHAEL M : I use this lens mostly for landscape pictures and more than half the time on a tripod. The rest of the time I take candid pics of people and my granddaughter. The picture quality is good f1.4 and excellent anywhere beyond that which helps offset the lack of IS. However the depth of field is very shallow f1.4 -2.8 and that adds needs considered. I hardly ever take video so I cannot answer your question correctly. In picture taking, moving subjects are not helped with application of IS. It helps freeze still subjects and background when hand holding. I highly recommend renting lenses and trying before you buy to know what meets your needs.STEPHEN P : The sigma has no image stabilization. The IS function allows you to take still photos that are sharp at slower shutter speeds (sometime 4 stops slower) if your subject isn't moving. It can also smooth out handheld video, but you may be able to hear the sound of the IS unit through the camera's built-in mic.GREGORY T : You're correct, there is no IS. I use this on a 5D Mark III which is very demanding on lenses and this is one of my favorite lenses. My images are fantastic with it and whenever I'm shooting indoors, especially, I swap out my 24-105L lens for this Sigma and the pictures are dramatically better. A friend told me once his "fastest lenses are his favorite lenses" and that's true for me here too. Good luck.
Kevin L : Does the Sigma 35mm lens fit the Canon EOS 5D Mark III?CHIH-CHENG C : Yes. It fits nice and great.KENNETH H : Yes, that is what I use it on :)CRAIG N : Yes it does fit 5D III. I use it all the time, it's my favorite lens. The APS-C lenses, I believe the C stands for crop that won't fit any full frame camera such as the 5D II & III. THE APS-C lenses fit the 7D, 70D, 60D, and the ti series BRETT Z : Simple answer is yes it fits the 5D3(provided you buy the canon mount version). Optics are on par if not better than both the Zeiss 1.4/2.0 and CanonL 35's, autofocus is fast and generally accurate micro-tics slower than the canon, Zeiss is manual focus only. If you buy this lens you should also buy the Sigma USB Dock UD -01 eo, that device allows you to adjust micro focus of this lens(or any other sigma ART lens you might buy) as well as update the software/fimware of the lensJEAN L : Yes. The mount is compatible. DENNIS G : YES - and it is a very nice lens. I use this lens on my 5D III, and I love it ! ! Note: This Sigma lens scores higher than any other lens in its focal length, including many that are much more expensive, and is among the highest, for sharpness, of any tested by DxOMark on a Canon body. Look for DxOMark's review on this lens...TIM C : Yes it does! Works beautifully!BRENT C : Yes. BRIAN F : As long as you get the lens for the Canon mount it will.MICHAEL N : Yes that's what for Canon means. It's a great lens. SANKAR S : Yes Kevin, it does
Shopper : What is the "perfect hood"? If this is included, do I need to buy an accessory hood as well?ANGUS M : The sigma 35mm f1.4 DG HSM canon mount lens includes an effective petal lens hood which gives maximum protection, unlike those made for zoom lenses.DYLAN C : A hood is included, and does the job. It's a fabulous fabulous lens. Adorama sells with and without kit at same price, so get it with the kit.ARVIN A : The Lens comes with its own hood from Sigma. Works perfectly fine. Don't see why you would need another hood.BRIAN P : Comes with bayonet hoodLOREN B : The lens includes a hood from Sigma. No need to buy a separate one, the Sigma hood fits and works great! STEPHEN P : I would guess that "perfect hood" means that it is a petal-shaped hood that is optimized for the FOV of the lens (on a full frame sensor). I really like the hood, it attaches firmly and is low profile (fits well in a camera bag without extra bulk.SHUMIN W : The lens comes with a hood made by Sigma although I am not sure what the "perfect hood" means. The hood is well made. You don't need to buy another hood.KAMLESH B : It comes with a hood and carrying caseTIM C : This lens does come with a hood. I have not needed an accessory hood. Great lens!JOSE E : It includes an original Sigma hood. No need to buy anything else!

Boom!!!! Sigma has hit a Grand Slam.

I am highly impressed with the quality and reproductive capabilities of this lens. i should also tell you that my arsenal includes the Art 135mm f/1.4, the 85mm f/1.8, the 50mm f/1.4, the 28mm f/1.4 the 35mm f/1.4 and the 24mm f/1.4 i have found that these lens are incredibly sharp, speedy in focusing and produce great color saturation. Seldom do I shoot anything but manual and stopping these lens down of shooting them wide open does not matter. They are super. In addition, I have had occasion to deal with Sigma for maintenance issues and they are courteous, professional, and have the ability to turn your equipment quickly. It is extremely difficult for me to find shortcomings in any of the lens. Do not be afraid of the price. You get what you pay for with these tools. I highly recommend the entire Art line from Sigma.

Owned it, sold it

Lens is built like a tank, super sharp, contrasty with good colors, but the auto-focusing was garbage and wildly inaccurate, so I sold it years ago. Even with adjusting in camera using a lens calibration tool, I could never get it spot on. Really wanted to like/keep this lens primarily for wedding receptions/low light, but I couldn't trust it to produce in-focus images.

Much better bang for your book than the Canon USM version

If you're looking for a cheaper version of the Canon USM 35mm then this is the one to get. It's super sharp and the autofocus works great - and the AF noise isn't that bad at all.

Well worth the money.

Mine came with the Sigma Dock. I was able to calibrate it with little effort. The results are very satisfying. It cost way less than the Nikon, and exhibits reasonable sharpness at f/1.4. It also has a handsome appearance. I am very satisfied with the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens. It does justice to my Nikon D850.

Sharp as a Tack!

By JENNIFER R.

I LOVE this lens! You will too!

Very sharp lens

By Kenneth D.

I use the Sigma Art 35mm on a Sony A7 III primarily for stills (not video). The autofocus capability is super fast and the lens is super sharp with a close focusing range. I recommend this lens for anyone in the market for a 35mm.

Sigma Art line delivers high-level artistic quality
Sigma is organizing all its interchangeable lenses into three product lines; Contemporary, Art and Sports. Designed with a focus on sophisticated optical performance and abundant expressive power, Sigma's Art line delivers high-level artistic expression. Developed with the maximum emphasis on artistic touch, our Art line lenses are designed to meet the expectations of users who value a creative, dramatic outcome above compactness and multifunction. Along with landscapes, portraits, still-life, close-up and casual snaps, they're perfect for the kind of photography that unleashes the inner artist. Ideal for studio photography, they offer just as much expressive scope when capturing architecture, starry skies, underwater shots and many other scenes. The SIGMA 35mm F1.4 DG HSM is the first lens from the Art line.

Compensate for color aberration to ensure unsurpassed expressive performance
Aberration is an important factor for the lens performance. To actualize a high-performance lens, one of the essential elements is aberration correction. When it comes to aberration, there are chromatic aberration of magnification and axial chromatic aberration. It is possible to correct the chromatic aberration of magnification in photo-editing software whereas axial chromatic aberration cannot be corrected afterwards. This lens incorporates FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite, and SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, and by optimizing the power alignment of the lens, both types of aberration have been corrected. The lens achieves ultra-high image quality through the entire focusing range. Also, by appropriate alignment of aspheric lenses, astigmatism and field curvature are corrected. The result is superior optimum resolution even in peripheral areas.

Large maximum aperture of F1.4
In 2005, Sigma released a lens that has aperture value F1.4 designed for digital SLRs, "SIGMA 30mm F1.4 EX DC HSM". Since then, Sigma has produced high-performance lenses by incorporating the latest optical technique, such as the standard lens designed for a full size image sensor, the SIGMA 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM and the medium telephoto lens with large aperture, SIGMA 85mm F1.4 EX DG HSM. This lens, SIGMA 35mm F1.4 DG HSM, is Sigma's fourth lens that achieves extraordinary expressive power at the aperture value at F1.4. For wide angle photography, it ensures excellent brightness with the large F1.4 aperture and a beautiful bokeh effect.

Attractive blur effect
Correction of coma aberration enabled less blur on a point light source in peripheral areas, and the function is best used for astrophotography and illuminations. It is also possible to create an attractive blur to the out of focus areas. The aspheric lens elements used as the first lens have secured peripheral brightness while correcting distortion. The rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.

Floating inner focusing system
This system compensates for astigmatic aberration and spherical aberration and provides extremely high optical performance for close-up photos.

Flare and ghosting conscious design
In order to achieve high rendering on this flagship lens, flare and ghosting were thoroughly measured from an early stage to establish an optical design which is resistant to strong incident light such as backlight. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.

Hyper Sonic Motor
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures high speed and quiet AF as well as full-time manual focus override by rotation of the focus ring. With the enhanced AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved.

Brass made bayonet mount
This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use

Ease of use
The new product lines incorporate rubber for the attachment part of the provided lens hood. For better usability, the design of the lens cap and AF / MF changeover switch have been improved. In order to ensure high accuracy of the product, all metallic parts and the new compound material, TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which has high affinity to metal parts, are housed internally.

Newly developed "USB DOCK" exclusively for new product lines
Based on these new lines, Sigma has developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.

Evaluation with Sigma's own MTF measuring system "A1"
Sigma used to measure lens performance with MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, they've now developed their own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of Sigma's quality control inspections. The SIGMA 35mm F1.4 DG HSM will all be checked using this "A1" before they are shipped.

"Made" in Japan
All Sigma's manufacturing right down to molds and parts is carried out under an integrated production system, entirely in Japan. Sigma is now one of the very few manufacturers whose products are solely "made in Japan". They like to think their products are somehow imbued with the essence of their homeland, blessed as it is with clean air and water, and focused, hard-working people. Sigma prides themselves on the authentic quality of their products, born of a marriage between highly attuned expertise and intelligent, advanced technology. Sigma's sophisticated products have satisfied professionals and lovers of photography all over the world, because their manufacturing is based on genuine craftsmanship, underpinned by the passion and pride of their experts.
