Review Summary
2025-02-11T07:12:59
Image quality at F1.2 is not on par with high end lenses in the L-mount. Once stopped down to 1.8 or larger, the lens is satisfactory. The Image quality of this lens is more suited to videography, or social media content than it is print work. The aesthetic design of the lens is even more cluttered in person than it appears in images. This lens has text, branding and labels?everywhere. In Summary - this is a value lens with a faster aperture, and smaller size than other options

Pros: At f1.2 you get narrow DOF Noctilux-like images with crisp microcontrast and super creamy bokeh. At f1.4-f2.8 the images rival or easily better any 50mm f1.4, f2, or f2.8 prime (including Sigma's outstanding 50mm f1.4 II) At f4-f8 you'll have razor sharpness that would get Ansel Adams to weep. With Sony's latest mirrorless cameras the AF is lighting fast, VERY accurate and silent. Cons (sorta): Okay it's heavy. 2.9 lbs with the A7CR I bought with it and battery. That said, the grip that comes with the A7CR makes the lens far less unwieldy and VERY manageable. (Cradling the lens under the barrel helps.) Final thought: If you've ever lusted for a Leica M11 and a 50mm Noctilux save your money. The 61MP Sony A7CR + Sigma 50mm f1.2 delivers the same results with higher hits. (Of course if the Leica "experience" is what you lust for, then this review won't make any difference in your wish list now will it?)

Just received it a couple of hours ago and shot some test shots around the house and outside. The focus is super-fast and quiet and tack sharp. Shooting at 1.2 produces creamy bokeh. Tilting it up and down from level with the ground you can feel and hear a very slight rattle when the camera is off but it tightens up as soon as you power the camera on. I assume it's the new dual HLA focusing system. Overall, it's top notch.

This lens is engineered to deliver superior descriptive power, starting from its widest aperture, and offers unparalleled portability to ensure high performance in any setting.
Experience the high resolving power of this lens, which is maintained from the maximum aperture throughout the entire focus range, enhancing the beauty of the large bokeh effect at F1.2. The lens construction and mechanical design have been meticulously streamlined, resulting in a compact and lightweight body that is the lightest in its class.
Equipped with a full range of professional-grade features, this lens boasts high-precision autofocus, powered by the latest High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) system. This innovative technology reduces volume while maintaining the same thrust, ensuring fast and accurate focusing.
The SIGMA 50mm F1.2 DG DN Art Lens is designed to deliver high resolution from the maximum aperture to the full focus range, and large, beautiful bokeh expression. The contrast between the sharpness of the focus surface and the melting bokeh effect creates a three-dimensional effect, thanks to its F1.2 aperture. The 13-blade diaphragm allows for beautiful bokeh expressions, and focus breathing is well-suppressed, making this lens ideal for video recording.
The lens incorporates SIGMA's first 13-blade diaphragm, which maintains a circular shape even when stopped down from the maximum aperture. The surface accuracy of the aspherical lens has been enhanced to the utmost to enable smooth and beautiful round bokeh expressions.
The lens is designed to minimize flare and ghosting, ensuring high backlight resistance for clear and sharp images under any lighting conditions. The lens body is the lightest in its class, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
The lens construction and mechanical design have been stripped down to the absolute minimum, with each piece of glass made as thin as possible while employing glasses with a high refractive index and four aspherical lenses. The floating focus ensures high performance while shortening the overall length, resulting in a compact lens.
The SIGMA 50mm F1.2 DG DN Art Lens is designed with high functionality and reliability to meet the stringent demands of professionals, as well as excellent build quality for long-lasting, reliable use. The lens is equipped with an AFL button which can be assigned to a range of functions via the menu on selected cameras.
