Review Summary

I have been a photographer for over 50 years and own over 25 lenses including many of major brands. This lens has the best resolution and color of any I own. I purchased it on a whim but actually the focal length is quite useful and fills in for my 50mm and 85 mm lenses in the studio.

I originally bought this lens to pair with my Sigma fp but now mostly use it on my Lumix S1 and S1R. Works great on all my L mount camera bodies. Built like a tank, looks great (gotta love that metal hood and magnetic cap), and it's pretty sharp even wide open. I mostly use the Sigma 85 1.4 for portraits but whenever I'm in a tight spot or want to incorporate more of the background into the shot I reach for the 65.

I think this is the best portrait lens made for Sony apsc cameras. Equivalent to 90mm on full frame, perfect focal length.

This lens is incredible! I purchased the L-Mount version and I'm using it on the original SL (Typ 601). Everyone always wants to know if the lens is sharp. Answer: A resounding yes! But there is a lot more to a lens than sharpness alone. What about the character? Most modern lenses have almost no character, however, after buying this lens and also trying the 90mm f2.8 and the 35mm f2, I find that they all draw similarly and offer the same look and feel to the images. And yes, there is a feeling. It's very creamy and dreamy wide open yet with a pinpoint sharpness that is never harsh. The best way to describe the look is cinematic. Highly recommended! If you are considering this lens and have never owned a Sigma product (I haven't owned a Sigma lens since the mid '80s), please do yourself a favor and spend an hour on Sigma's website to learn not only about this I-Series of Contemporary lenses but about the philosophy behind them as well. And also about the build quality and engineering and design. Finally, look into the company. They are not a typical company but are very different and very special.

Sigma created a masterpiece with this lens. Small and light weight makes it an excellent choice for street photography. The 65mm focal length makes a great replacement for the 50mm standard lens every day candid portraits. It is very sharp wide open at f2. The bokeh is excellent. The metal construction makes it extremely rugged.

I Series | A New Photographic Experience For Mirrorless Users.
The SIGMA I Series features full-frame-compatible lenses that offer mirrorless users a new and better alternative, both in the experience of shooting with the lens and in the impressive results it is able to achieve.
One of the key advantages of mirrorless cameras is their smaller form-factor, and this new 65mm optic is designed to be perfectly matched to these more compact systems without sacrificing performance. This combination of superb optical quality with exceptional portability, not previously possible with DSLR systems, will bring new opportunities to this and future generations of photographers.
New Standards Of Optical Performance For The Contemporary Line.
The 65mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary brings to the table the highest level of optical performance at a maximum aperture of F2 with a lens body of a size that matches a mirrorless system.
Axial chromatic aberration, which tends to be noticeable with medium and telephoto lenses and cannot be effectively reduced in-camera, is corrected thoroughly with the use of SLD glass, allowing it to capture sharp details. A pair of glass-molded aspherical lenses is used to correct spherical and comatic aberration, as well as astigmatism, while also helping make the lens configuration smaller in size. A combination of the latest optical design with advanced processing technology that brings life to the former gives the 65mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary its excellent optical performance as well as compact size.
In addition to the beautiful bokeh effect thanks to the control of spherical aberration, the reduced vignetting effects help curb lemon-shaped or swirly bokeh and give photographers greater control over the out of focus areas of their images. On top of it all, the SIGMA-standard anti-ghosting and anti-flare technology ensures high-end performance in backlit conditions.
Exceptional I Series Build Quality With A Compact Form-Factor.
All I Series lenses have an all-metal construction. The precision-cut aluminum parts not only give the barrel a sleek, stylish finish, but provide superb durability, which improves the quality of the entire product. Metal materials are also used in internal structures that slide with the operation ring for added robustness.
These high-precision components crafted with SIGMA's cutting-edge metalworking technology are also used in SIGMA's cine lens line-up for professional cinematographers and provides an exquisite feel to touch as well as sound effects, making photographers want to reach for it and play with it over and over again.
The cover ring between the focus ring and the aperture ring has hairline processing that is also used for the rear cylinder of the Art line. This covering functions as a finger hold when attaching or detaching the lens.
