I have been using this lens almost exclusively for the past few months. To say that I am impressed with it would be an understatement. This lens has perfomred flawlessly with my Sony Alpha7R3. I will say this, read up on the switch settings on the side, and pay attention to your distance to the subject. It took me about a day to get accustomed to switching the distance setting for the correct image. I have used this lens for macro photography of flowers, for portraits, and for landscapes. It is one of the most versitile lenses that I have used. NOTE: If the lens is taking "forever" to focus, check the switch setting, you may be close to the subject and the focus is set to the greater distance. Once you get the "feel" for the distance, it becomes second nature!

Very great macro lens. I have used and enjoyed this lens very much. If you want to take macro shots this is a very good and not very expressive lens to do that with!

This is an amazing lens. Super crisp, and all around powerful lens for a great price. Great lens for macro, but I also love using it for product photography.

The image is very sharp if the focus is set correctly. I used it with my Canon 6D, but found that the auto-focus is quite slow and very noisy when doing macro photography. Manual focus is also not so smooth (especially no image stabilization). Compared with Canon 100 mm f2.8L, such disadvantage is obvious. Especially, do not forget to take the lens tube back (manually) when taking it off from the camera, otherwise the lens bag cannot hold it!! It is quite troublesome!

Very high quality glass from Sigma here! It's sometimes a little slow in focusing but its not really aimed for fast response, but for its pristine quality images from Sigma Art glass.

Great lens. Smooth but slow focus. Sometimes I get confused with the distances, for it is a macro, so I have to check the switch between macro focal distances and regular to infinity. Solid construction. I have tested it with a Panasonic S1R via the Sigma MC-21 adapter and in a Sony camera via the Sigma MC-11 adapter. Both worked nice! So this is a lens that stays in my collection.

This lens is very sharp even at f2.8, auto focus is quiet and fast at non-macro distances. The auto focus hunts some at macro distances, but very accurate in the manual mode. My overall assessment, it is great lens, just what I was looking for. Easy to use and the image control is intuitive.

I Have been using macro lenses since the 70’s and I have probably owned and used over a dozen of them. I recently received the Sigma 70MM ART macro lens in the sony E mount and I have to say that the performance is up there with my Voigtlander APO. It isn’t second place to any macro I have ever owned or used. Some people complain that the lens does not focus fast. Think about the range a macro has to go thru from 1:1 to infinity. It has to move it’s focusing elements several inches. It isn’t practical to make it as snappy as your wide or normal focal lengths. It isn’t a fair comparison. In good light it is reasonably fast when working with longer distances. Some complain about the focus by wire taking a lot of turns to focus. Again, consider this is a macro lens, not a portrait lens. You need lots of precision when focusing in the macro range otherwise you could not achieve the needed accuracy when working with a very shallow depth of field. Others have complained that the lens extends when focusing closer. It does, however, unlike some lenses that have internal focusing it’s optical focal length does not decrease as you get closer. A macro lens can be a general purpose lens when needed but keep in mind it is a special purpose lens first. To me the things that some people don’t like about this lens are part of it’s design and are what makes this a FANTASTIC macro lens not a compromised lens.

This is my first experience with a macro lens The price prompted me to try it & I am very satisfied. The lens is extremely sharp & autofocus works well, no complaints. The tripod was an added bonus in the bundle. The center column that can be extended at right angle to tripod has proven to be very helpful. This package is definitely good value for the money.

I just got my camera back from the repair shop yesterday. I haven't had much time with my lens. With what photos I have taken it is sharp.

The sharpness and clarity of this lens is very impressive. Yes, it’s auto-focus is slow, but I do not in any way feel compromised when doing macro and still-life work. And at the price, it has been a very good purchase.

With other available macro lens out there for the E-mount, it's tough not to ignore a Sigma Art series macro lens. Once you've gotten used to the mechanical features to the lens, this lens will impress you in so many areas. It's compact, and lightweight allowing you to keep the weight down and pack efficiently in your gear bag - which is a huge reason why i switched 100% over to Sony from being a native Canon wedding photographer. Using this for macro ring shots and other fine details, the quality and sharpness in the photos were very impressive. Compared to Sony's 90mm and Canon's 100mm L, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. With the Sony A7III, the magnification allows you to nail focus with great accuracy where you need it most. Colors are vibrant and true, little color correction was needed in all my testing.

This is currently the only macro with the L mount available for purchase. (March 2020) The image quality is quite good. The build quality feels a little less than great.

Beautiful macro lens, exceptionally sharp! It does a bit of focus hunting, but with the Sony A7iii touch screen focus, the problem is solved. Well-built with quality materials. It is a third the cost of the Sony 90mm macro.

I am in love with this lens! Absolutely stunning image clarity--the sharpest lens I've ever used. And the bokeh is lovely. Yes, it sometimes has to hunt for the focal point, but not that much and not that often. Small price to pay for such spectacular image quality. It is also lightweight compared to other macros and fits wonderfully on my Sony A7iii. The touch screen focus function on the A7iii also solves the focus hunting problems--Simply touch the focal point on the LCD and the Sigma finds it. Great quality lens for Sony E cameras with image stabilization and touch screen focus. I couldn't be happier.

I watched many reviews on this lens and like what often happens people will talk you out of anything. But this is an excellent lens! It isnt as snappy to focus as others but this is designed for quality not race car speed. Its a great focus length for portraits and headshots but also a wonderful micro lens. There's a switch on the side to go macro, otherwise it works well in FULL mode on my Canon EOS RP, and when I switch to shoot cropped, it simulates a little further out. Sigma really delivers with super-sharp, great color saturation and for an affordable price. Oh, and its in a small package. You'll spend 3X and have 2X the size/weight compared to this. Highly recommended!

This was way more lens than I was expecting! I opted for this instead of the Sony 90mm macro due to price as I only use it for ring shots. Previously I had been using an old 60mm Nikon lens. This one far outshines that one! It's super sharp, easy to focus and allows great range. I've only used it once so far, but was very happy!

I have been only dabbling in macro over the years. I got this lens 2 days ago and have been playing with it. It is sharp, has very good image quality and is somewhat slow. The speed has been noted and is expected. The focus limiting switches help. I used a Sony A72 and A6500. Initially I'm thinking I had more success with the A6500 in the AF department. Outside in normal focus range, the AF speed is decent. Lastly, just be sure to get a good enough shutter speed and you will be pleased with the results.

This lens has great detail, and that is why I decided to keep it. However it is painfully slow at focusing, I believe with more use that I will learn more about how to use this lens without the focus frustrations.

The lens is sharp corner to corner. The AF speed is a bit slow, but its a macro lens so no biggie.

I only recommend this if you can get the 90mm G. The image quality is great but AF is a bit quirky. Up close at macro level it is a bit slow to capture focus. However, if money is an issue and you have flexibility to manually focus and or wait for AF to catch on I do recommend it.

This lens is super sharp, fast and gives good color. Previously I was using the Canon 24-70 II, with the Sigma MC-11 adapter. That is a great lens, but I wanted to get all the features that a native Sony lens would have. I am not disappointed with the picture quality and can't believe it costs so much less.

I am happy with this purchase. Adorama was great to work with and the lens is far more capable than I am and I know my images will improve as my skill does. My only gripe is that the overall focus speed feels slow, but I believe that ultimately that is mostly user error. I am including a recent capture using this lens on my A7II.

It is a great value. The focal length allows you to shoot portraits as well as the typical Macro shots. Pros - Sharp - Price - Nice Bokeh - The Size and Weight (make it is easy to hold steady) Cons - (Autofocus) somewhat loud and it hunts a bit - No IS (but that saves you money and is less of an issue on Sony bodies)

The Successor Of The Legendary, Razor-Sharp Macro Lens—
The SIGMA MACRO 70mm F2.8 EX DG
In recent years, macro lenses in the standard range have tended to employ inner focusing with the goal of maximizing autofocus speed. In contrast, the new SIGMA 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art lens is designed to prioritize optical performance, fulfilling the demanding image quality requirements that define the Art line. In the standard to mid-telephoto range, it delivers stunning resolution and incredible clarity that greatly exceed expectations for a macro lens. The coreless DC motor further enhances image quality, while an optimized algorithm helps offer extremely smooth autofocus performance for a weightier, high-performance lens. Photography enthusiasts will recall a certain legendary, razor-sharp macro lens—the SIGMA MACRO 70mm F2.8 EX DG—and be glad to learn it is available in a new form, updated with outstanding Art line quality.
Top-level performance at every shooting distance.
In order to realize top-level performance at every shooting distance, the lens features an extending, floating, two-group focus mechanism. This configuration minimizes aberration to produce optimal results at any focus distance. To minimize axial chromatic aberration, the optical system incorporates two FLD glass elements, two SLD glass elements, and one element with a high rate of anomalous partial dispersion and a high index of refraction. In addition, two aspherical lens elements help increase resolution at close shooting distances. This optical system makes possible a razor-sharp in-focus area contrasted with a bokeh area free of color streaking.
From an early stage in the lens design process, flare and ghosting have been measured to establish an optical design resistant to strong incident light sources such as backlighting. SIGMA’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting to help photographers produce sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions. The included lens hood can be attached to block out extraneous light, which can have a negative effect on rendering performance.
The degree to which light is refracted by glass depends on the light's wavelength. This fact causes different colors of light to focus at slightly different points. The result is chromatic aberration, the color fringing that is particularly noticeable in telephoto lenses. Most chromatic aberration can be removed by combining a high-refractivity convex lens element with a low-refractivity concave element. Yet residual chromatic aberration known as “secondary spectrum” may still remain. To minimize this secondary spectrum, which can be a serious issue with conventional lenses, SIGMA lenses feature up to three types of exclusive low-dispersion glass offering superior performance: ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion), SLD (Special Low Dispersion) and FLD (“F” Low Dispersion). In particular, FLD glass offers ultra-low dispersion in combination with high transmittance and the anomalous dispersion characteristics of fluorite. Meticulous deployment of these types of exclusive low-dispersion glass and optimization of power distribution gives SIGMA lenses superlative image rendition undiminished by residual chromatic aberration.
The focus-by-wire system eliminates the direct mechanical connection between the focus ring and the focus drive system. Controlled by SIGMA’s latest algorithm, a newly developed coreless DC motor adjusts focus with optimal speed and low noise. Full-time manual focus is available even during autofocus, allowing the photographer to make minute focus adjustments simply by turning the focus ring. In addition, the focus ring’s large angle of rotation helps the photographer achieve the extremely precise focusing required for effective macro photography.
The 9-blade rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur in the out-of-focus areas of the image.
The brass mount combines high precision with rugged construction. Its treated surfaces and enhanced strength contribute to the exceptional durability of the lens.
Evaluation with SIGMA’s own MTF measuring system: A1
We used to measure lens performance with a Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we have developed our own proprietary MTF measuring system (A1)* using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections.
