The Best Monitor Headphones I've Used

The Shure se215s are an EXCELLENT option for any serious studio or stage monitoring work. I first used them nearly 15 years ago in a live setting with Shure's wireless in-ear system. I never really thought much of them except that they sounded pretty good and would mostly stay in with my thrashing around the stage. Recently I was looking for a pair of wired earbuds for monitoring while traveling and I was pretty sure a mixer/producer friend was using these. We spoke about them and he told me he starts all his serious mixing tasks on these. I trust his ears and how right was he about these. These are the most accurate monitoring devices I've ever used. The have detailed flat bass response with crystal clear frequency response throughout and they are very comfortable. I haven't had ear fatigue or discomfort from these yet. I've completely stopped using my Audio Technica ATH-M50s because these sound so much better. I'm able to hear into the mix more in my own work and also just listening to a streaming service as well. These earbuds make listening to music fun. More fun than it used to be and I nearly always have music playing at home so I'm quite a music fanatic. The value on these earbuds is impeccable. Really they don't have any business being as good as they are and, as an added bonus for travel, they come with a carrying case pounce that also has a clip so I can clip it on my belt loop and not lose them. I hope to always have a pair of se215s. I'm a true believer.

The cheapest pro-quality in-ear monitors today

The 215's are the cheapest pro-quality in-ear monitors today. They're small, light, and comfy (so they can be worn on multi-hour gigs! Their sound is reasonably accurate; they're tools for doing a job. There are better IEM's available for more money; but below this price point you will only find only ear buds and toys. the 215's are the minimum quality that most pros might wear to a paying gig. Human ears vary widely in size and shape; so the 215's will not be ideal for all musicians. Also, since the 215's are MONITORS, they may reveal flaws in the pre-recorded music. So if you're just listening to some tunes on your phone, you might want to skip the 215's, and go for cheaper "ear buds" or iPads (etc.) depending whether you really want something that sounds "good," or "accurate".

Love them

I love these in ears. I use them for gigs and they’re a perfect affordable alternative to $800+ wireless sets. Great sound isolation and they’re very discrete since they are clear.

Not Shure about this item

Not sure if I got a deffective one, but iI just use this with my phone and it keeps losing connection. Sound is good but isn´t great. I feel them heavy and battery just lasts about 2 hours. I´m giving 1 star because the price and the brand I expected more. This feels like a kind of outdated product.

Nice set of in-ears. I can use them but they fall a bit short of my needs.

I purchased these to use when playing bass in the Praise Team Band at my house of worship. Because I run direct to the FOH console and stand near the back of the chancel bandstand, where it’s difficult for me to hear my bass through the floor monitors, I tend to overplay. We have an in-ear monitoring system and I need a set of in-ears that have an overall smooth response with sufficient bass. These are good in that respect, although they aren’t, as one would say - outstanding, which is why I gave them a 4 rating. I think these might really excel in a studio environment, but for my use, the bass is not only just a bit lacking but the seal in my ear must be “perfect” for the strongest bass. I suppose I might get a better seal with custom fitted ear pieces, but I’m not prepared to pay those prices. I’ll be able to use these but they’re not truly ideal for my intended purpose.

Comfortable, good audio quality

These earphones are very comfortable and do a great job blocking out outside audio. The sound quality is very good -- no distortion or exaggerated tones that I've ever noticed, and good response in general. The flexible holding parts were easy to set up to fit my ears, and the buds stay in securely.

Excellent for the price

The Shure SE215 is an excellent sounding entry level pair of IEMs. Even though the bass is a little heavy for my taste, the overall sound quality produced by these earphones is great at this price. Very similar sound to Westone UM1s, but much heavier bass. Extremely comfortable to wear for hours, though I wish the cable portion that go over your ears get seasoned quicker. The material, made with the intention to remain in position over your ears is too flexible, could be made more tactile.

Solid Isolation

Pretty good sound isolation, though I have problems with the comfort. The fitting is not the best for my ear (I tried all the different foam/dome tips) and the wire that goes around the ear clashes with my glasses.

Shure reminds me why they're worth the money.

I've been trying out ~$ headphones for a few years now. I've even been moved by Head-Fi to try out some direct-sale "un-branded" IEMs that have been randomly popular. It's hard to know what you're getting for your money - in the extreme, BOSE/Beats, etc add a huge price for their name. So Klipsch S4's, ATH Japanese produced IEMs, Triple-Driver/Double-Driver unbranded headphones promising huge value for around that 70-100 mark all got tried. I had some pleasant surprises, and some clear failures - and there was no reason or rhyme to it. This time, when I decided it was time to replace my IEMs, I remembered how I originally even discovered headphones could fundamentally be different. My Sure SE-210s, Circa 2009. I am so glad I chased my nostalgia, because the 215's are so clearly above and beyond everything I had been trying to do for nearly a decade. Fit. Isolation. Balance. Clarity. Bass is well defined, which really means it's physically present as well as audibly defined. Works for everything, unless you just want your head to rattle with muddy bass. Mids are clear, pleasant, and highs are never painful or obtrusive. I will say, my first listen was bad. It was terrible. I was even a little bit mad. Then I realized that the Shure IEMs HAVE to be worn CORRECTLY. Seems like a strange ting to say - but anyone who's worn them knows what I'm talking about. It's not exactly the fit most people are used to if you're coming up from budget headphones - but if you want beautiful bass - getting the right fit, and the right ear tips is critical. After I figured out why I was wrong - I could suddenly hear tone, drum sticks sliding off cymbals, strings being picked hard or strummed - and how heavy (like bass guitar) those strings are. It's really a new element for those who haven't listened to what is probably seen as "decent" headphones. Thing is, I wear these all the time, they need to be anything but delicate, and I can't worry too much about them being destroyed or needing to carry around a headphone amp or DAC to appreciate them. These are truly excellent. I do have complaints - but minor. The cord is long and heavy, and catches on things. While it snugs up well to the back of your head - it doesn't move when you turn your head easily. This can all be fixed by (like I did) putting a clip on your shirt to hold up the cord with slack. Having a built-in alligator style clip would improve the wear of these for more active people a whole lot. On that note - these things seem to be rugged enough. With the new breakaway connections on the body of the headphones - I don't worry about what eventually killed my original pair, which was tugging on the wiring. I also could have been smarter 10 years ago and realized that Shure has amazing customer support and warranty - which makes the value of these headphones (IMO) ridiculously good - and a clear decision for anyone looking to know what "good" headphones are about.

Second Pair

My fist pair lasted about 6 years! Got these again and it does everything you expect! I use it for in ear monitor and everyday music listening.

love these

I typically use these in the gym with my Fiio M3 and have used them on a few gigs as IEMs. The sound is very accurate and imaging is good. When wearing glasses, this is more comfortable than big headphones, but not convenient if you have to pop one out to talk to somebody.

Essential

I looked long and hard for a pair of (passive) noise-canceling earbuds that would really work to cut out the annoying sounds of the city bus as I rode to work. I tried Etymotic but they hurt my ears. I tried some others (ThinkSound came pretty close). I even tried some active noise canceling cans but I haven't found a pair that doesn't compromise sound quality in some way. Enter the Shure SE215s. Fantastic passive noise attenuation with the foam tips, comfortable feel (once you get used to how they go on your ears), and most importantly great sound quality. These really do punch way above their price range - the sound has plenty of impact, with strong bass out of the dynamic drives while still maintaining detail. It is my preferred "fun" sound signature, with some emphasis on bass without becoming boomy, and a bit pulled back on treble (without losing detail) to keep from being harsh or tiring. For the price I don't think you can beat this. I actually prefer them in every way to the Sennheiser IE80s, which are two to three times the price. Plus, Shure is an American company with a great rep and solid customer support. A good company to support.

Great sound

Impressive sound. Better than expected bass, although not as boomy as Beats (good thing). Fit is a little different, it takes some getting used to. But they feel very secure wrapped around the ear.

Decent sound, excellent noise isolation

First of all, the noise isolation is excellent, so if you're looking for this feature, I'd recommend these. Regarding sound: I'm no expert, but the low's to high's sound good. Bass is lacking a bit, but no big deal for me. Make sure you use the proper tips for your ear size. And if you don't know how to put these on, look at the picture. First 30 minutes they were slipping out my ears because I didn't put in on correctly.

Best in-ear for the money!

I own many in-ears and headphones, but after reading all the awesome reviews of how good this in-ear earphones are; I decided to purchase it. Trying this in-ear on for the first time. I felt in love with it, instantly. The sound is amazing and for the prices, it is the best for the money.

happy w purchase

These are my first IEMs in this price/performance range. The isolation is great. Sound is pretty neutral IMO. Bass feels a little weak, but I expected that going in. Also, different tips affect that in my experience. Overall very happy with the performance for the price. I had to get some smaller foam tips from comply for the most comfortable fit for my ear canal.

Great Earphones

Crisp and clear mid and high notes. Bass is lacking. Sound isolation is very good. Very Nice cord quality. Nice assortment of different ear tips. Comfortable the way they sit in the ear with the cord wrap around the ear. i would like to see tunable bass at this price point.

Great quality audio with room for improvement in ergonomics.

Good sound quality with deep base and sharp clarity. Only negative I have is its fitment in the ears. Sometimes it is challenging to put them on, especially without visually confirming which goes to which ear. But, it's quite snug and comfortable, once they are on and secured around the ear properly.
