Shopper : Are there any sound differences between SM7B and SM7dB?Shopper : No. The SM7dB maintains the exact same sound characteristics of the SM7B, just with the additional +18 or +28 dB of clean gain. However, since many audio interfaces use preamps that introduce noise when you begin to reach the limits of their gain range, you may notice less hiss in your recordings when you use more of the clean gain from the SM7dB and less of the potentially noisier gain from other audio interfaces. 
Shopper : Does the SM7dB need Phantom Power?Shopper : The SM7dB will require phantom power for the preamp to function. It still works passively without the preamp (when set to ‘Bypass’) and is effectively an SM7B. 
Shopper : What is the difference between the SM7B and SM7dB?Shopper : The SM7dB maintains the look, sound, and features of our iconic SM7B, just with a Shure-designed built-in preamp to provide either +18 or +28 dB of transparent gain. The additional gain brings the sensitivity up to a level optimized for typical audio interfaces. The SM7dB uses the exact same components and parts but is about 1 cm longer to accommodate the preamp circuit.

The latest iteration of this legendary XLR dynamic microphone makes it easier for podcasters, streamers and musicians to get perfect vocals from any recording setup.

Giving it enough oomph to work with any XLR interface. Providing up to +28 dB of gain, the preamp preserves the mic’s frequency response for that iconic sound. All you need is an interface or mixer offering +48V of phantom power to operate the preamp. Don’t need the preamp? Flick the switch to the left to “bypass” and get original SM7B performance.
