I really didn?t want to like them because I didn?t want to pay the price. But after using them they?re fantastic. I have 7x, 10x and now these 12x. The close focus is amazing. The speed/ease of focusing is very impressive. The field of view makes it easy to even get on close small birds in vegetation. I doubt I will use my other binoculars ever again.

The ($3000) NL Pure 8X42 arrived yesterday, and I have looked through it at a variety of targets: flowers, bees, birds, trees in the distance, and (more mundane :-) roof lines and lamp posts to check for rectilinear distortion. I'll compare the NL to my ($1000) 8X32 Nikon HG and also to a ($2400) Swarovski EL 8.5X42. The NL field of view is clearly larger than either of the other two binoculars. Concentrating on the center of the field of view, you almost are not aware the edges of the view, though if you go looking for it, you do find ithe edge. The NL Pure has a small amount of pincushion distortion, noticeable on roof lines and verticals like lamp posts. In this regard, the EL's are better and the Nikon about the same. Wider fields of view tend to have more rectilinear distortion, and no exception to that rule occurs here. Brightness is about the same as the EL. I was viewing in bright daylight, so very little difference from the smaller aperture Nikon as well. Contrast into bright light (observing trees in the distance not far off the line to the Sun) is about the same as the EL, and noticeably better than the Nikon. Contrast looking away from the Sun toward other trees is very good in all 3 binoculars with no really discernable difference. No "rolling ball" effect on any of the 3. The NL's forehead rest accessory is a wonderful, effective way to cut down on shake and help position your eyes at exactly the right distance from the eyepieces. This little item (costs $140) alone makes it worthwhile to turn in any other high-end binocular you own (even the EL) and splurge on the NL. My only gripe about this is that the documentation on the item is a bit weak, and the pressure required to snap the two supports into place can cause your thumbs to hurt some. But once it clicks home, you will absolutely love what the forehead rest does for you. Gripe: The NL Pure's diopter adjust does not have a way to lock the amount of adjustment. While the control is fairly stiff, it is still possible (while hunting for the focus wheel) to accidentally brush against it and change it some. You need to be aware of this and check it now and again. The NL can focus closer, if you like sneaking up on butterflies and bumblebees. It is also very comfortable in the hands, though not by much over the other two instruments. The Nikon wins big in the weight department, no surprise given its smaller aperture, and can be used easily with one hand. I also like the belt pouch for the NL; it's much more convenient than another strap (in addition to the binos own strap) on the neck. Swarovski does include a strap for the belt pouch, so if you prefer to hang it on your neck, you can. Both the NL and the EL are sharp all the way to the edge of the field of view, the Nikon goes only to about 80% of the way to the edge before some softening of the image is noticed. I was using delicate flower parts (thin stamens) as the target for these observations.

Just absolutely amazing, clear wide field of view. I have experienced eye issues, and wear glasses, but these optics are truly incredible, and bright. I also have a Swarovski spotting scope I have used for years and while these are not as powerful for distance viewing, they certainly are much easier to pull out and get on target. The brightness and clarity seems to really enhance my vision of the subject, a pleasant surprise, and the 10 x 42, with the forehead assist is steady, and so easy to deploy quickly, and very portable as compared to a scope. I purchased these with the idea that if they weren't spectacular they would be returned. One week out now, and I registered these online, I am keeping these top quality optics. The price is steep, but they are optically as perfect as I have ever experienced, and I believe that these will be with me for life. I enjoy watching birds, boats on the ICW, wildlife, and nature views, these are just so fantastic that I can't return them.

It?s great fun having a 12x42 binocular (powerful and portable) with such a sharp and clear image. It?s truly outstanding. Hoped that this would replace a spotting scope, and while obviously it isn?t as powerful as a scope, it?s really worth it for its portability, image and wide field of view. This, along with a wider field 8x32 binocular make a fantastic pairing for nature viewing. It doesn?t get any better, at least in my experience. Expert reviews that I?ve seen are as impressed.
