Sturdy Ball Head but the rubber grip on the knobs become loose and turning the knobs is not easy at times.

I bought this based on its capacity and reviews, but I'm not sure I'll keep it. First, there's no way on earth it could securely hold a 77lb camera-lens rig - the ball would slip. When I use it with a 5DIV + a Sigma 150-600 sport (~8 1/2 lbs), unless I crank hard on the main locking knob, the lens will sag a lot when I carry the rig over my shoulder (and no, the sub-tension adjusting knob on the main knob has no effect on maximum tightness). On the plus side, during use it locks the lens in place well enough and here's why I might keep it: the lens doesn't noticeably shift as I tighten down the ball, which is a rare thing in ball heads $ Still, I'm concerned that cranking on the main tension knob every time I carry my camera and lens over my shoulder might take a toll on the locking mechanism.

I have recently purchased the K-40X based on a review on dpreview.com. It is solidly built and heavy. It seems like overkill for my cameras (Oly E-m5 and 40-150 pro, Nikon D5500 and sigma 18-35) . Since it is still new to me, I can't comment on durability yet, but based on its build quality, it appears that I will be using it for years.

Buy this instead of the higher-priced ones. I have a K-40X on each of the two AstroTracs I have housed in different locations. I haven't regretted changing from a couple of well-known and highly recommended ball heads. I've found as those higher-priced ones "age," they do NOT hold as well as when first new. Neither do some other "things" I have!

On an impulse I bought this when it was on sale, & it has been my main ballhead. I have a photo clam 34mm which works great, but the photo clam feels like a dinky toy next to the K-40X. I've securely mounted a Nikon D7100 paired with a 200-500 lens on both the Sirui & Photo Clam, but the K-40X allow much smoother movement of the rig than the Photo Clam. My only complaint for the Sirui is the panning knob does not afford smooth graduated control like the main knob. Its not a major problems since how I shot doesn't involve much panning.

Yes it is overkill at 77 lbs, but it operates very smoothly. Works great on my Manfrotto tripod!

For the price its a no-brainer. Ball head is extremely well built, solid. You can tell form & fit are perfect and high engineering priorities, super smooth actuation of all moving elements. Ball head movement is great in all directions, though I use the panning base for lateral axis moves typically. Mounting plate is awesome, rubber gripped, the nut has a pop-out tab for tightening which not all have. The head has a plate 'catch' so it can't accidentally slide out if you didn't tighten it 100% accidentally. All things that make a big difference and at a very competitive price point. Absolutely no movement in camera position at any angle. Now Im not putting a 600mm lens at a full 90 degrees, so YMMV, but for any reasonable operation it should perform flawlessly. Objectively the only thing I would change (not a real complaint) is the rubber on the tightening knobs is very soft so if you torque anything down too much (or just right?) when you try to loosen it up your fingers will just slip and not get any traction. Ive learned to not be so aggressive with the tightening and its good and the head still doesn't creep so maybe user error. I expect a gloved hand would have zero issues.

The Sirui K-40X Ballhead is a serious player among all the ballhead options available in this class. For me, it is a very nice fit with the equipment I presently use. I generally use this ballhead with my Nikon D750 camera and either a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens with a 1.4X teleconverter, or a Nikkor 200-400mm f/4 lens, with or without the 1.4X teleconverter. My tripod is a Manfrotto MT055CXPRO3, and I use a Wimberley Sidekick. With this combination, I notice no sag or drift when locking down the mechanism. The attachment and adjustment knobs are sized perfectly (never been a fan of the quick attachment levers). The ballhead operates very smoothly. It is a heavy ballhead as well as being tall. Being 6'3", the height of the K-40X is a plus. I also own the Sirui K-20X ballhead, which was a little undersized for my longer lenses. I use the K-20X on a smaller tripod for landscapes. Also a wonderful ballhead in my opinion. In summary, the Sirui K-40X is a quality ballhead head at a very attractive price. A great value that you won't regret.

Purchased this ball head for still photography. This head will support any Dslr and lens combo. Rock steady. It is very large so if your tripod is designed for heavy loads this is the head for you.

I ordered this ball head to use with a very old very heavy tripod. It replaced the factory pan head. This head is very large and has a very wide base. It will support anything I own without sagging. The K30x might have been better for me size wise but I decided not too exchange it. This is not a head for field use. Way too heavy and large. Absolutely the best quality to price ratio on the market. I love it. My second Surui head.

At first it seemed solid and I enjoyed the fluid movement of the head. That was short lived, lasted about a few months in studio, got used a few hours on weekends, took it out side to shoot and the head movement became jerky, thought it might be the 27 degree temp, brought back in studio same thing. So I got good use from it maybe a handfel of times. The plate for my camera took three months to come in and is priced 30% than the same for higher end model.

Just received this SIRUI K- 54 Ball-head with 77.2 load capacity. I purchased this to support my Nikon D300 with 100mm-400mm zoom lens. Though this head may be overkill for me I was not happy with my smaller 33mm ball head. The 33mm ball head matched the weight of my camera and lens however the lesson I learned is ignore the specs on weight and buy as beefy as you can afford. This one is a great value as it is similar to Ball heads twice the price. Sturdy and easy one knob adjustment makes it a pleasure to use. Works great in both vertical and horizontal position and again, is VERY STURDY. Build quality looks good and I didn't find any problem with the plate mentioned in previous reviews. Maybe they included a newer plate in my purchase.

I took a big chance on this ball head. Sirui is a new brand with hardly any reviews, so I thought I would give them a shot. What attracted me the most to this ball head was the fact it has an arca compatible clamp and its low cost. As soon as it came in the mail, I mounted it to my Feisol CT-3442 legs- It felt rock solid. I mounted my 5DII w/ 70-200 Mark II and was not disappointed. Absolutely no droop at all. This thing can definitely handle a much heavier combo than I own. The ball was nice and smooth, and the friction controls worked great. My only complaints are this - I don't like the camera plate AT ALL. It seemed weak and bulky. Also, the blue band on the tension knob rotates freely so I cant tell what friction setting I'm on.. really not a big deal. The camera plate isn't a huge deal because I knew all along I would be using a RRS L-Plate with it.. which works flawlessly. Highly recommend.
