Review Summary
The Sky-Watcher GreatStart SW 130NS-EQ2's shorter 650mm focal length is designed to capture wide fields of view at lower powers. This lends itself to the kind of observing typical of deep-space. Many galaxies, nebulae and star clusters are quite large. The wider field is beneficial to be able to see these objects in the same field at one time. Their presentation is also often more dramatic when framed by surrounding dark sky. Sky objects will appear much brighter, but smaller compared to the SW 130N-EQ2.
If your primary application is deep space, this telescope offers a great way to get started at an entry level price. The additional light gathering yields brighter images and higher resolution compared to smaller diameter telescopes like the SW 114N-EQ2. The 130mm diameter SW 130NS-EQ2 provides light gathering sufficient to resolve rudimentary structural detail in prominent deep-space objects to a greater extent than a 114mm mirror instrument. M13 the spectacular globular star cluster in Hercules can be incrementally resolved into thousands of additional stars surrounding the object's central core compared to a 114mm scope.
Glowing, cloud-like nebulosity is more impressive, brighter and seen in wider in extension in emission nebulae like M42 (The Great Orion Nebula) and M8 (Laguna Nebula) compared to a 114mm diameter instrument. Keep in mind viewing deep-space is best done from a dark sky location away from city sky glow. Solar system objects however can be seen easily within the city. The SW 130NS-EQ2 resolves lunar and planetary detail adequately, but use of the 2x Barlow or short focal length eyepieces may be advisable to achieve higher powers necessary to view close up detail under conditions of very stable air.
The incredible sharpness of the SW 90AR-EQ2 objective lens for planetary viewing would be a better choice for those observers primarily relegated to observing the solar system because deep space viewing is severely limited by city sky glow. The primary mirror is fabricated from Grade-A glass to exacting demands of smoothness and optical figure. The mirror is aluminized and over coated with a hard protective quartz layer for lasting quality. The focuser assembly is solid and stable with a mechanically smooth rack & pinion focuser.
