I bought this as an add-on for my SLIK tripod, which came with a 3-way head. It is an excellent fluid head. My only complaint is that the 3-way mounts with a 1/4x20 thread and this mounts with the next size bigger threads. So to change I have to invert the mount on the tripod. You have to remove the mount and flip it over (one side has 1/4x20 and the other has the bigger screw). It's not hard, but wastes a couple minutes changing. They should have made both heads use the same thread size. Overall, the tripod and both heads are great, I just wish they were easier to interchange.

Horizontal movements are just OK, but vertical movements are very smooth.

Special Note: This product is only the Tripod Head - the tripod legs are not included. I purchased the 504QF II to replace a damaged 503QF Tripod head. The 503QF and 504QF tripod parts are interchangeable. The 504QF II adds a single bubble level to the head. I primarily use the tripod for Videography. It has very smooth fluid-like horizontal and vertical panning. Tension can be easily adjusted for 3 directions of movement (horizontal, vertical and 90 degree tilt. The head's arm is longer than a photo tripod's allowing slower, more gradual pan motion. The arm's position can be rotated such that it slightly angled up/down or left/right depending on panning motion desired. The base plate that attaches to the video camera uses key head allowing for quick and easy installation on/off the video camera. No coin or screw driver required! It also quickly releases/installs onto the tripod head. While outer coating of the parts are plastic, they all contain metal threads and inserts making for a very sturdy platform. I recommend using this tripod head with Slik's 500QF series tripod legs. While the head to base uses a standard 1/4 screw it also has a 1 1/2 diameter metal plate to better distribute the camera's weight onto the tripod. Most photography tripod legs use a much smaller connection plate.

The Slik 504QF-II Video Fluid Head was designed as a dual solution for the traveling videographer using light Mini-DV camcorders who also may desire to use still cameras. It is rapidly deployed, quite smooth and easily used. Note that it has three axes of movement, as opposed to a normal video head's pan/tilt exclusivity; this is so that you can make vertical orientation pictures with your still camera.
Decades of experience and a wealth of accumulated photographic knowledge, combined with current engineering, have been instrumental in helping Slik create tripods and heads that are amazingly light, yet offer remarkable strength and stability
