I was looking for a very solid spotting scope mount even if that meant giving up a quick-attach plate. I'm often in a hurry to see something before it flies off and don't like the tilt plates that can flop around either. All I need is pan and tilt and an ability to lock it. So this is perfect. The construction is so solid as well. All machined aluminum the only plastic is the little 3-ended locking collar on the attachment screw under the mounting surface. Even the small lever you see on the side for locking the rotating camera base is alumimum. The pan/tilt handle is plastic of course, on a metal stem. What so nice about this is that single handle locks both pan and tilt or loosens them both for movement. Its not a fluid head or anything but plenty smooth for anything but video I would think. A few drops of oil can easily be dropped onto the mating surfaces periodically.
