I was looking to replace a "dinky" aluminum/plastic tripod that I've had for years. I looked at a lot of different mfrs and models. Slik seemed to be highly reviewed overall and the most consistent quality wise. I was on the fence about the ball head or a 3-way head. I finally chose this ball head because of the Arca-type mounting plate. I read a review somewhere else where someone complained about having to push a safety release and then slide the plate off sideways. Well, that is one way of getting the camera off, but you can back the lock plate off completely and then lift the camera right off. There's even a caution about it right on the head. This tripod is super stable once you get the legs positioned and everything tightened up. It has easily supported a 5D Mark III with a 300mm lens. At just under 5 pounds, it's not the lightest, but I've had no issues carrying it around literally all day with my camera bag. If you want another plate while ordering this tripod, it's Slik #6502. I haven't used any other Arca-type plate with the head, so I can't comment on it's compatibility.

The first Slik tripod I owned was back in 1982 or so and it was a tough, good quality tripod, the only downside was the weight. There are too many brands and models of tripods available, all claiming to be the best, strongest, the lightest, the most compact and in the end I went with a brand I had good experience with. I'm happy with this unit, it is light enough, strong enough, tall enough and has lots of bells and whistles, enough to work in any situation I can imagine. And the price was fair by my thinking.

I had an old tri-pod that I bought when I was in the Navy about 40 years ago, it was near the top of the line, but was out dated by newer technology. I like this one a lot more than the old one, it features and ease of use, but I still need to work with more so it use it becomes second nature in it's use.

This is a great tripod to carry to any job or in the studio. The weight does not restrict movement or make you feel burdened in what you can carry. I recently used it at an event with my D700 to take portraits, both horizontal and vertical. The ball head was surprisingly easy to use when switching between H & V. The extending legs operated well and were very solid. The center extension added to it's versatility in gaining the height needed. The tripod came with a carrying case and shoulder stray. While it is lightweight, it is strong. This is a practical tripod for any photographer using a DSLR.

Good as any tripod out there with the exception of a carbon fiber tripod, weight wise. It simply does what a tripod is supposed to do.

I like it for portraits. Used it he other day to shoot a 200 + group. Too wobbly when center column is extended all the way up. Otherwise I think it will be a good general use tripod. Easy & fast to set up

I recently purchased this and am very pleased to say that the build quality surpassed my expectations. It's solid and very stable. More than capable enough of holding steady my full sized DSLR even with a heavier lens attached. I like that you can quickly adjust the tension of the ball head using the tension adjustment knob to match the current weight load of whatever camera and lens you're currently using. Hard to beat at this price point. Highly recommend!

This is a great tripod. I am very happy with it. A little on the heavy side, but I don't mind that. I want a tank that will hold up in the wind.

Love working with this tripod
The new SLIK PRO 500 BHx tripod feature the new SLIK PBH-525DS compact professional ball head. The head has an Arca-Swiss compatible quick release system for mounting the camera. The low-profile comfort grip quick release plate is thin enough to left on the camera at all times and will not hinder vertical shooting.
The SLIK PRO 500 BHx has a capacity of 8.8 lbs. and is capable of handling a full sized professional DSLR with standard lens. In addition to the standard easy grip ball lock lever, the head has a tension adjustment knob to fine-tune the drag on the ball movement. There is a separate panoramic lock on the base so that once the ball is leveled or placed at the desired angle, the camera can still turn in a panning movement. There are also 360 degree markings around the base so the camera can be turned known number of degrees for taking photos to stitch together for panoramic shots.
SLIK's exclusive A.M.T. super Aluminum-Magnesium-Titanium alloy legs make the PRO 500 BHx tripod rock steady, yet lighter than it looks. The A.M.T. alloy has a 40% greater strength to weight ratio than standard aluminum, making it lighter and stronger than the standard metal used in most tripods.
The PRO 500 BHx makes setting up easy with secure, speed-release level-action leg locks. A gearless center column and 3-position, adjustable angle leg locks allow easy set-Upon uneven ground or steps. The tripod's center column is actually two threaded pieces that unscrew to convert the top piece to a short column. This combined with the adjustable leg angle locks allows the tripod to be lowered to just 13.8 inches for very low angle or macro photography in the field.
PBH-525 DS Ball head

The low-profile Arca-Swiss quick release plates may be left on the camera and won't hinder vertical shooting.
