This lens gave me great bokeh at a fraction of the price for the cheapest cine lens! I wish it had hard stops but that’s the most I can say bad about this great lens! As a starting cinematographer you need something of this nature as a crutch for cinematic footage! This just crushes most lenses at this price point for what you get! Perfect for any YouTube studio set up and even better for low budget short films to get you cinema grade quality for cheap! I received it in timely manner and the packaging was safe and secure.

Not much of an effect. Difficult for a guy with big fingers to work.

This isn't one of SLRmagic's toy lenses per se, but it does have creatively niche attributes. It can be acceptably sharp in dead center. Everywhere else is relatively soft. This is useful for bokeh, which goes beyond the standard characteristics of throwing the background into a blur. This lens extends the softness with a blur on the edges and a different shape depending on f-stop. Thus, it's probably wise to keep the subject centered unless you're going for a totally creative atmosphere. The aperture ring is clickless. I didn't know that beforehand but that's what I wanted for cine purposes. After I ordered this 35/1.7 lens SLRmagic announced a larger 35/1.4 lens, touting it as a cine lens because of clickless apertures. Well, this one, the 35/1.7, is also clickless and should be advertised as a cine lens. This is my first cine lens and I embrace the clickless approach and am considering the 11/1.6 version for a wide angle on an m43 body. I might prioritize this 35/1.7 for video interviews, but I won't know until I shoot talking heads, or if I should stay with my old Nikon 50/1.4 for serious shooting. 35mm (70mm) is better for headshots since I don't have to move as far back vis-a-vis the 50mm (100mm) lens. This particular SLRmagic lens is tiny in diameter and gets up to 75mm long with filter and hood. The hood is threaded rear and front for a uv or nd 37mm filter. A very strange lens in appearance and function.

The SLR Magic 35mm f/1.7 lens is a multi coated manual prime lens that is made to work with the for the Micro Four Thirds Digital Cameras.
What is really special about this lens is that it is very light weight (~100g) and has six unique aperture blades. When wide open it produces silky smooth bokeh. When closed down to f2.8 it forms a special shape and the bokeh of the resulting photo start to swirl with a slight Lo-fi feel. When closed down to f8 it forms a unique square shaped aperture opening. In other words it is kind of likehaving three lenses in one! It is the signature of the SLR Magic lens and it is quite interesting.
The lens is great for creative photography. A perfectly round aperture is achieved at f2 for the 35mm f1.7 lens so it is great to use as a portrait/normal lens
The lens is a fully manual lens and it is a great lens for creative photographers who would like to take artistic photos with a shallow Depth of Field. It is easy to use
Manual focus is easily achieved by the assista nce of x7-x14 zoom of MF Assistance function in Live View. Users are advised to use Aperture p riority (A mode) with this lens. User would have to select shoot w/o lens mode in the camera setting. More advanced users may use Manual mode (M mode) when using this lens for creative opportunities. It is also recommended to shoot in M mode when either the internal or external flash is used as TTL metering is not enabled in Aperture priority mode.
