Questions & Answers

PRADEEP P : Is this the newer version of the SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x 50? The older version seems to have 3 screws which I don't see here in this version. Can you please tell me the differences between the older and newer version if this is the newer version? ThanksANTHONY R : The newer version is the 2x. The three screws just aren't pictured in the angle shown in the product image, but there's still three screws
William M : Can this be put in front of a zoom lens? Especially, a Sony EX 3 ?ANTHONY R : Absolutely yes. And especially since the EX 3 is a cropped sensor camera, it should work without a hitch. It does start to get blurry when using it at the 75mm mark on a s35 sensor, but nothing too bad and it's still usable.MICHAEL B : I personally haven't tried it, and probably wouldn't use it with a zoom lens. Since the adapter needs to be focused for the focal length in use and the position of the subject (possibly needing to use diopters), changing the focal distance would complicate the set up and you'd have to be able to adjust the focal ring on the adapter simultaneously. If you don't plan on changing the focal length while shooting, then it may be possible. A focal length too wide could lead to some heavy vignetting with the adapter. I believe that it is best to use it with prime lenses, but I will need to try it out on some of my zooms when I get a chance. Sorry I couldn't give a definitive answer, but I hope it helps give you a better idea.Doug B : It can work with a zoom lens PROVIDING that the front of the lens does not turn when being zoomed. (If it DOES rotate, you can't zoom during a shot.) The usual restrictions on minimum focal length and wide/tight will apply. I haven't used it on an EX 3 but have successfully used it on a Tokina 12-24, though it vignettes below about 19mm on my BMCC.Elnar M : It really depends on the lens and on the camera. For example I can put it on 18-35 Sigma on my BMPCC but putting it on the same lens but on 7d Vignettes a lot up until 35mm. So just testing and testing. Prime lenses work mostly fine though. It all really depends on the physical size of the lens.
David T : Is this lens comparable with the old 4x3 sensor's camcorder?SCOTT J : It's a 1.33x squeeze factor so basically it is designed primarily for 16:9. The idea is that it will squeeze or squish 16:9by 1.33x , putting it at 2.35:1 when you stretch it back out in post. You could use it with 4:3 but that would put it at 16:9. It's really designed for 16:9 as a starting point. Sorry for a late answer. Hope this helpsBONG Y : I do not necessary know what comparable means. But if you mean compatibility, yes. This adapter does have native mount of 62mm and with proper step down rings, it can convert your 4x3 camcorder footage to 16:9.ANTHONY R : If the camcorder has a filter thread and you have the necessary step up or step down rings, you should be able to.CALEB H : Most cameras don't shoot 4x3 anymore, but if you have one that does and you put this adapter on it then you'll get a 16x9 widescreen (approximately). I used this on a 16x9 camera and it gave me 2.35:1 cinema widescreen (again, approximately) which is exactly what I wanted. So yes this works with 4x3 cameras, but it won't give you as wide an aspect ratio as you see in cinemas. Instead, you'll get 16x9 aspect ratio like HDTVs.JOHNNY G : Sure but it is designed to stretch a 16x9 frame to 2.37:1 commonly called CinemaScope. On a 4x3 sensor it will give you 16x9. To get CinemaScope on a 4x3 sensor you want a 2x anamorphic. My advise wouldbe to spend the money on a more modern camera ;)Elnar M : Yes, but it will make your 4x3 footage become 16x9, not 2.35x1

About SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x 50 Anamorphic Adapter With Diopter Set

The SLR Magic Anamorphot 1.33x 50 is a anamorphic lens adapter designed for cinematography. Increases image resolution and detail by squashing / compressing the image horizontally by a factor of 1.33x to allow maximum utilisation of the cameras' sensor. Anamorphic lenses therefore require subsequent stretching, in post-production or at projection. Intended for use with shooting at 16:9, bringing the intended output to a standard 2.39:1 wide format with a higher resolution than simply letter-boxing the image in camera. The lens features an adjustable dioptre for "sweet spot" adjustment controls on focus.

This SLR Magic anamorphic adapter also offers unique effects such as horizontal flare and streaks from light sources and ellipsoidal bokeh, for cinematographers wanting a characteristic filmic look. Depth of field is also affected, as in practice when using an anamorphic lens a longer focal length is required in order to achieve the same angle of view. Therefore anamorphic lenses produce a shallower, more cinematic depth of field than a the same lens without the adapter.

The adapter has a 77mm front filter thread and a native 62mm rear thread with a 58mm, 52mm, 49mm adapter rings provided. As such it is only suitable for lenses which have a front element size of 50mm or less.

Limitations of close focusing is helped with the use of dioptres which further enhances image resolution and sharpness on close / medium distance applications.
