Fantastic player

Had my player since the beginning of time and it works just as good now as it did then. Not sure what these other reviewers are talking about... I have never had a problem streaming anything. Ever.

Not all zone compatible

Have ordered several DVD's online from Amazon. None of them able to be played on the BDP-S380 as the zone is incorrect for New Zealand. Very annoying as was assured by Sales staff that it was all zone compatible.

Very Disappointed

I like my player. I have found one big glitch. " No HDCP compatibility". I ordered a movie on the Qriocity which is owned by Sony and cannot play it because my device is not HDCP compatible. The HDTV I bought 6 years ago is HDCP compatible, why would this new player not be? Sony you need run a script on your site to detect this problem before you take my money. Hoping to get a refund.

not impressed when just purchased 10 days ago

just purchased a sony product after 10 years of using cheaper other name brands. found the menu option rarely works due to disque and blu ray player options, has frozen about 1 per day so far, and can only unplug player to reset, remote control is very basic and not impressed with sony for providing this, remote option play only works sometimes , blu ray player always shuts off after 1 hr of not using it and has no timer. today i am returning this player and purchasing another brand. please all reviews before purchasing a product. good luck. canada

disapointing experience

I rushed to the NEX to buy this supposedly WiFi Blue-Ray player and got home hoping to watch Netflix. Instead I found out that this Blu-Ray player is not WiFi capable without an extra part that doubles the price of this thing. The packaging and ad should point this out, but it doesn't.

No HD through component video

I specifically bought this BD player for the component out as I have an older TV that does not have HDMI. After an hour chatting with customer support, they let me know that you CANNOT get an HD signal out of the component out video. What is the point of even having the jacks on there?! No where is this mentioned on the packaging or in the documentation.

Nice player but....

I should have read the reviews before purchasing this. I just bought it at Sears a couple of weeks ago and it is already discontinued. My router is on top of my entertainment center so I was able to connect to the Internet using an Ethernet cable. I had purchased a second one for the bedroom, but when I found out that only Sony's WiFi adapter would work with it (for another $80) I returned it. So unless you can connect with cable to your router, or do not plan on streaming anything from the Internet, you do not want this. However, in all fairness, I have to say that the video is beautiful and it is quite easy to use. I have my choice of streaming Netflix from either the Blu Ray player or my TiVo, and I always choose the Sony now. So I guess that "no WiFi" is the only con.

Warning: Does not support CinemaNow

Warning: I purchased this player to watch movies using Best Buy's CinemaNow streaming service. Although the service is listed as being supported on the player's box, when I tried to use CinemaNow I received a message that the service was "coming soon". Sony customer support then told me CinemaNow is not supported on ANY of their 2011 Blu-Ray players and could not say when the service would be available. Do not buy this player, or any other new Sony CD players if you intend to watch movies on CinemaNow.

Great player

It does what it was meant to do and that is play Blu-ray DVD's. The load time is pretty much instant (seconds) compared to my old Blu-ray player (2 yrs old), which took a 3-5 minutes between load times. I was suprised at the menu screen. Looked like I was playing on my PSP. The picture looks a lot more smoother too compared to my old one. I guess I just needed an upgrade. The slim design is great. All the other ones I've seen are so much bulkier and look like they were meant to make you cappuccino's for the extra $100-200 to watch with your movie. I dont care to much about the web apps or the wifi connectivity, all that seems like extra fluff to help it sell... and besides you have to pay for those services, so why bother. If you just want something to play Blu-ray DVD's, then this is a great player. The price is decent and at some stores you can find it for sale at around $100. No issues... yet

THE Blu-ray Player!

I bought this along with my Sony Bravia TV and they work great together. For a lot of functions you can use blu-ray remote and not even need the Bravia remote. Only slight con here is with this model you need a wi-fi adapter if you want to connect to the internet wireless. I just used a Cat-5 cable from an office store and connected the blu-ray to my router and it works great. I read when I bought this about some peoples complaints about not being able to just browse through Netflix, but that is no longer the case. You can now browse though any "watch intantly movie" and play it. So many other things to use as well! I LOVE this blu-ray player!

WIFI only with sony adapter

I was really excited to finally get a blu ray player. I spent a lot of time reading the reviews of the different sony players. I didn't see a need to get the 3D BDP-S580 because I don't have a 3D television. It's actually more cost effective because you don't have to pay another $80 for a wireless adapter from sony UWA-BR100 and it is faster etc. I tried my other wireless adapters and they don't work. When I saw that the product was wireless ready I assumed I could use any other USB device. Sony doesn't have to charge so much for an adaptor either, $80 is insane, I'm considering getting the wired LAN and running it through my house in protest.

Not up to the Sony Name

I also had the Netflix issue as noted by someone else but Netflix has made a change on their end and I'm now able to search and review movies. I'm disappointed I cannot watch movies I have on 2 seperate media servers (both Windows and non Windows). I cannot stream either FLI or MPEG4. With such a winner like the PS3 you would think their DVD product line would be as robust. Had I known before I purchased this product what I know now I would have purchased something else.

Don't Buy if you want to use Netflix

I bought this specifically because I have always been a Sony fan and because I had just ordered the Netflix streaming service. Well, I am not a Sony fan anymore as this thing generally manages to play about 2 - 4 minutes of a movie before it just locks up and you have to turn it off and on again and restart the movie if you want another 2 - 4 minutes of the movie. Its OK as a Blu Ray DVD player but you can get one of those a lot cheaper and as they are everybit as good. With Netflix - this thing is a disaster - so I went out and bought a Roku player and it is unbelievable.

Poor Web App Performance

When buying the Blu Ray player I had selected this one because of the additional features such as Netflix and Hulu but should have checked the reviews first. Netflix works just fine on my PC and video game platforms but on this thing it is always stopping every few minutes and ReBuffering which takes 1-5 minutes. I am returning this poor product back to the store and buying one from a different company. PERIOD.

major disappointment

i bought this specifically for viewing movies from netflix - i thought maybe i didn't set this up right and found from other consumers that they had the same issue - upon looking at the complaints, it appears sony responded back on one of them and said they were working on it that an upgrade would be forthcoming - it's been several months and so far, nothing new for the upgrade on netflix - am considering switching to a different brand

Preference will be your final decision...

After trying out a few top leading brand blu ray players I came across a sony review of the bdps370 online. Wow, was I impressed. Went to the store and instead of purchasing the 370 decided to go with the 380 due to the fact its a newer model. So here is a quick and easy to read review that will hopefully help you in your decision making process... As soon as I plugged it in and turn it on I noticed 3 important things... 1. Very quick start up time. 2. Quick and Easy set up. (Used wired set up for Network) 3. Response time. This player is great for... 1. Watching blu ray disc movies 2. Streaming web content online (i.e hulu plus, vudu etc) 3. Music, Video and Picture content 4. Bravia Sync. The Performace.. 1. Doesn't lag when watching any online streaming video content. 2. The remote communicates great with the player allowing quick response time when scrolling through the interface and selecting apps. The picture quality... 1. Very vivid. 2. Very deep yet bright colors. 3. Looks great anywhere from 720p-1080p Minor Adjustments... 1. Would be nice to see more user fun apps like (sport updates, weather etc.) Could use more widgets. 2. Would be nice if netflix movies came pre loaded on player. Instead you have to add the ones you want to your instant que from pc. Well, thats all I can think of for now... I hope this helped you. Good luck!!!

Switched from Samsung to this... glad I did.

Bought a Samsung which failed within a week, took it back and picked this up instead. In comparison, I'm VERY glad I did. Picture quality is comparable, but loading movies and navigating through menus is much faster. Perhaps that was due to the problems/errors with that particular Samsung, I don't know, but this is much faster. Several people blasted this unit because you can't search Netflix for movies -- doesn't bother me, because I can do that with my desktop, laptop, PS3, etc. I just want to use this unit to WATCH Netflix, which I can and it does well. The Pandora interface is very impressive, also, complete with album-covers-turned-screensaver. Minor annoyance: the home menu is full of services I don't (and will never) use, but I can't figure out how to get rid of them -- I want a CLUTTER-FREE interface, not advertisements in my face 24/7. If I find a way to delete/hide these unused services, I'd give this unit 5 stars. If it fails on me in the near future, it will drop quickly to 1 or 2 stars, but so far -- quite good! BONUS: this plays my SuperAudio CDs VERY WELL, which the Samsung could not do.

Disappointed

I think this will have to be returned. I bought this primarily to stream Netflix. The only titles that I can find to view are the ones in my Instant Queue. There are no details of the titles shown and no way to show details. Awful. If this is Sony innovation and quality I am not a Sony fan.

Bad netflix and hulu apps, really hurts

On netflix you can only view your instant Queue, no browsing movies. Needs a serious update to fix this. On all of my other gadgets I can search netflix movies and watch them instantly. Hulu makes it impossible to find shows. You have to know what you want to watch, no new discoveries. Every thing is in a folder. its like trying to find a lost file on your computer, you have to go browse TV->full episodes->pick a letter->then you have to scroll through the show. you can't just click hulu and then see shows you like and new recomendations, like on the desktop app. If they fix these two things, it would be perfect.

Horrible Netflix Interface

If you are planning on using Netflix don’t buy this device or any other Sony Blu-Ray players from what I can tell. Sony Restricts the Netflix search and menu capabilities and only allows you to stream what’s in your queue. If all you want to do is watch Blu-ray movie on this device you better also buy a USB thumb drive and plug it into the back of the unit because without external memory it will not play Blu-ray movies. Once you do this though you will be impressed with the picture quality. Thumbs down Sony.

Watch the Updates

Whelp what can I say? Installation was a breeze. Setup was a breeze also. After setting up my Netflix account, I found out I had to instant que movies in order to watch movies from Netflix on the unit. I ran through the menues and noticed Cinema Now (will be coming). It made me excited that this feature was coming since I was told by the sales person it was coming. A few days after owning the Blu Ray, a firmware update came and sure enough, Cinema Now, is not coming. Actually Cinema Now is MIA. I can only hope that the next firmware upgrade will give us Cinema Now. In all fairness, there are other content providers to choose purchase or rent from. amazon is one of them. I don't really have a beef with the unit just that when I purchased it, I was under the impression Cinema Now would be available. Aside of that, the unit WORK Flawlessly. Picture Quality meets and exceeds expecteation. Either via HDMI or Component out puts. I Hope You Enjoy Yours for the features and benefits.

WORTHLESS web apps

Blu Ray functionality is great… web apps are HORRIBLE. One of the main reasons I purchased the unit was the variety of web apps it offers. Unfortunately, their poor functionality has me regretting this purchase. The Netflix app will only display what you have placed in your instant queue via your computer. The Hulu Plus app refuses to refresh and sync with the changes you have made via your computer. It also doesn't respond when you delete/remove items from your queue. I've even gone as far as deleting our account from the Blu Ray player's app and reconfiguring it. That didn't correct the issue. Unfortunately, I've had to move my son's XBox back into the living room in order to use our Netflix and Hulu Plus accounts. I would not recommend purchasing this unit if you are interested in using its web apps. THEY ARE WORTHLESS!!!

Yellow Blue Red Green bottoms no function

I bought this Blue Ray DVD player. It gives clearer picture than regular DVD player even if I use old DVD disc/movie. However, the manual never explains the functions of the bottoms of Yellow, Blue, red and Green on the remote controler. Very confuse. The istruction manual is not for the layman. Read manual p 16 to P 20. You know what I mean.

Bum Deal

I bought this as an upgrade my Insignia and to match all of my other Sony products... Turns out it's not much of an upgrade. Netflix interface is an old tired version that even the cheap Insignia knows is unacceptable. NO search NO recently watched... nothing. Just your instant queue. And no, 'go to my computer' is not a solution to this problem when items at almost half the price aren't trying to tell me go to my computer to update my queue. Sony support line and forum can supply no ETA on these features. Posts from MONTHS ago on this issue are not addressed by moderators. A phone call with customer support will tell you to wait. FACEBOOK on this BD player!! just kidding this icon takes you to VUDU. Totally disappointed. I expected more from Sony. Returning this before it's too late for the Samsung BD-C5500 (less $$) which has actual features.

BDP-S380 no

Not the SONY I expected. Had to Update right out of box Locks up when using a number of Internet Movie suppliers like NetFlix, etc. Have to disconnect Power to "Reset" when it Locks Up, as there is no way (for 3 hours) to turn it Off, go back, etc. Sorry, but there has to be better out there DG

It would be nice if Sony has an update for Netflix to be able to access Netflix and choose movies rather than to use the PC first.

returned

I had a negative experience with this device and returned it within 2 weeks of buying it. It froze on me frequently and, on several occasions, restarted itself when I tried to do simple functions. It ran rather slow as well. However, the biggest issue I had was a unique problem of not being able to connect to certain online streaming services. Sony customer service was UNABLE to solve the problem, it was the device itself.
